ok OOT, this is my venting post. i realize by being a woman, i'm in a .5% minority, and i'm sure i will take heat for this post, but i really don't care.

this forum is one of the most misogynistic places i have ever had the pleasure of frequenting. most of it is in good fun, but it really gets out of hand sometimes. i could provide many comments and examples, but i'm sure most of you know what i'm talking about. but to be specific, i would like to explore one example, which is the frequent comments on women's weight.

just today, i have had the pleasure of reading three threads in which a woman was described as fat, or chubby, or whatever... you guys spend all day analyzing women to the slightest flaw, and laugh about it, when in reality most of you are either not socially aware or attractive enough to get with a woman with half of her "rating." who knows if i'm the only one, but i'm pretty sick of it.

i realize saying this will make nothing change, the misogyny and abusiveness will continue... as will the superficiality... fine. but hey, how about at least when you post a picture of some girl in relation to some story to rate her or whatever, you post a pic of yourself. or when you call some chick fat because she hasn't appeared in the latest playboy, post a pic of yourself and we'll see how you guys measure up. that way, while you're busy rating some girl and making fun of her, you can at least withstand the heat yourself. if you aren't man enough to do that at the very least, well then, i pity you.

I cant say that I disagree w/ anything you have posted. And, probably in your opinion, I am a blatant offender of some of these things, there is no way Im putting up any pics of any girls I talk about to satisfy your insecurity. Someones got a pic of me, somewhere, they can post it if they want, but Im not going out of my way.


edit: the things that people "say" in this forum, are what 99% of them are thinking in their normal life, so you really should be thanking us for the insight. the other 1% of us say it here, and in real life.

I don't think it's as much about mysogeny as it is about creating standards. I think dcifrths described the girl as "chubby" because he wanted to make it seem like it really was a typical, non-model kind of girl, not because he thought there was anything wrong with it. most guys assume that all other guys want skinny girls so when it comes to rating girls that's the standard they go by.

that's just my impression, there are probably a few other ways of looking at it. fwiw a lot of the better relationships I have been in have been with chubby girls.

horrible analogy. girls aren't public figures who have made their careers out of the talent they've proclaimed about their weight. their appearance isn't the way it is specifically for the entertainment of male minds (regardless of whether or not you think so). try again please.

The fact is, some posters who talk like this are being funny and pushing the line of taste. Some are trying to be funny by pushing the taste-line, and failing. A few are just mysoginist pigg-os. Try not to take 99% of what is said around here seriously, or better, have fun by taunting the internet nerdballs whenever they get over the line. Most guys on here are very serious and polite little geeks in real life and compensate by gettin frisky or indignant on the cyberweb. (Some are true socio-paths, but no-one takes them seriously anywhere.)

I myself like fat chicks, so I'm exempt from all criticism.

The threads weren't berating the fat posters at all. In fact, it was more a thread about "it's ok that you're fat, I want to provide you with inspiration to get thinner to make your life better." Furthermore, in those threads, no one rated the pics of the male posters and said unpleasant things about them (or if there were some, I missed them, but in the majority this did not occur).

I've been around internet and preinternet message boards longer than 99% of people and this board is not any more misogynistic than any other. I think what you're complaining about is masculinity, not misogynistic. This is how actual men talk when women aren't watching them. I recommend you never go straight.

This is dead on. Female celebrities and private women alike. Why else would women give a damn about what they look like? Why is it that words like fat and chubby come off as offensive? Because women want to appeal to men.

Fslexduck - I think "misogyny" and "abusiveness" are a bit overboard - "superficial" is spot on.

I know for a fact I am not an offender in your eyes - as I've never once posted a negative comment looks wise about a chick on these boards.

However, I have to ask you - if someone posts a picture of a woman, and other posters are asked to rate her, how could this exercise be anything but "superficial"?

Oh, you speak too soon when you say no one wants to see pictures of men here. I would very much like to see you all post links to nude pictures of yourselves, and then I (and any other female OOTers) would get to pick you apart, give you numerical ratings, comment on aspects of your anatomy that are repellemt or "deal breakers," and discuss whether or not you "measure up" (remembering by definition that half of you are below the median).

Given that by and large you are an uncomely, ill-groomed lot with clothes on (going by pictures I have seen posted), I would be interested in seeing whether things improve without clothes....
