Summer in New York City

So I luckboxed my way into a summer internship at a financial firm in NYC. 10 weeks in the city... working and probably living in midtown. The hours of work are gonna suck. Hopefully I'll have the weekends off.

What are some cool things to do, places to eat, clubs, lounges, fun [censored] to do? Rent is a bitch... so any cash-churning/rent-reducing tips would be cool too. Anybody know of any weekend soccer leagues/pick-up games?

Damn I'm excited...

They'll be taking you out for the most part so don't worry about that so much. I hope you like Excel and Powerpoint.

You've got a lot of area to work with. Hopefully you'll be able to find what you're looking for.

I suggest you reconsider looking for a place only within walking distance of work. A short subway ride would be very easy, and give you the choice of many different neighborhoods.

Chelsea Piers has soccer leagues, but they are pretty expensive.

You might find pickup games in Central Park (northern part of park), otherwise the only pickup games I've ever found were in Queens/Brooklyn.

If you like good restaurants it's definitely easier to get reservations during the summer, as NYC empties out to the beach every weekend.

Not really. The two Morgans, Lehman, and Bear wouldn't classify themselves as near Bryant Park.

Its very unlikely that you are going to find someplace within that area. I would give you advice on where to live, but I'm not sure where the college kids hang out these days.

Question for the OP. Is it a paid internship? I'm going to school now for accounting (not sure what kind yet) and was looking to get an internship in about 18 months. I don't see how I could do it though without quitting my full-time job. Are paid internships common?

Murray Hill is the outer boundary of 10 blocks. And if he likes Long Island hell he might have a good time there.

In NYC, no one classifies themself as near anything unless it is a block or two at most away. Besides where did it say the firm was classifying itself as anything? OP said:

Anyway this is stupid. You win. I am sure they would not "classify themselves as being near Bryant Park"

That's my point. 10 blocks from Bryant Park includes the Empire State Building and the Hudson River. Morgan Stanley and Lehman are in Times Square. JP Morgan Chase is at 270 Park. BofA is on 57th. Bear is next to Grand Central.

I asked the OP for more specificity because I work one block from Bryant Park and it seemed possible that he's working here for the summer.

Ah. JPM, BoA and MS have closer offices than their global HQ to Bryant Park too, just none that are 1 or 2 blocks that I know of.

(BOA have offices within 3 blocks (6th between 45 and 46th) and the Morgans are about 5 away each (both have offices in the McGraw Hill building))
