great finds at trader joe\'s

i recently ran into the bean, cheese, and rice burrito there. i know it's hard to make that sound special, but this thing is ridiculous. it's in the refrigerated section. 390 calories and a perfect size for lunch.

2 minutes on high to microwave. poke an air hole in it so it doesn't explode. 2 minutes is a perfect cook for it.

the tortilla is amazing, perfectly soft and delicious. you can't get this kind of quality from frozen burritos.

the rice is fine. it's still rice, so don't expect to get your hair blown back by it. it synthesizes great with the other ingredients though.

the beans have awesome flavor and texture. very thick, almost "dry" paste although it's not technically dry.

the utterly fantastic cheese blend is muenster (!) and queso blanco. i'm a big muenster fan, i love it on burgers and i think it's underused.

run, don't walk, to trader joe's and pick one of these up. i've got a lot of stuff i like there and i'll probably be responding to post details on some other items i like. feel free to do the same, i think there are all sorts of hidden gems there. we all know about stuff like the papadum chips and chocolate covered peanut butter pretzels, right?

They have a lot of good stuff there. The mushroom pizzas are fantastic, and I really dig their cajun sushi rolls too.

Their dry roasted, lightly salted peanuts are very, very good.

Their Mango-Passionfruit juice is also good, but you have to check out the label, which refers to it as "Heart of Darkess Mango Passionfruit Juice", complete with small pictures of helicopters flying over the jungle, straight out of Apocalypse Now. (For those who aren't familiar with that movie, it has a scene in which a character leaves the safety of the boat to go looking for mangos and instead, very suprisingly, gets attacked by a tiger.) Check it out the next time your there...

I have had these for lunch a lot the past couple of weeks, they are excellent and far better than chipotle.

you know what else is good, is the veggie wraps. this is coming from a man who usually despises wraps of any kind. beans, veggies, cheese, garlic, they're excellent.

There are so many gems in the frozen section.

There is this indian rice that comes in a packet. It's rice with carrots and peas and mushrooms. It's so easy to make right out of the frozen package and it's really tasty. I forget the name though but it's hard to miss it.

Also, the frozen orange chicken is really good and easy to make.

Actually, I really can't dig on the frzon section...No me gusta, sorry. It's only a little better than a lean cuisine.

But their canned soup is YUMMU! They've got this spainish chicken stew, comes in a big glass jar with rice lentils etc...Super-good. Also; turkey chili. And molé chips.

You heard me.

The microwavable brown rice is great. Tastes just as good as if it were out of a rice cooker or a pot, but in only 3 min.

They have several very excellent very inexpesive wines. Just buy several different ones and figure out which one you like best. I've also bought swordfish there when they've had it on special. Excellent.

Chairman's right. The $3 bottles are much more close to a $12-15 reality.

Dried mango slices with chili powder

I don't know GA, some more people have posted good frozen food section choices. Those 3-min microwave rice packs come straight out the freezer and taste great. So does the Gyoza.

What did you have that you didn't like?

Frozen fish is considerably cheaper than the supermarket and pretty good.

Little frozen rock shrimp.

Coffee drinks for a buck.

Ground just broke on the first one in the Atlanta area and it is on my ride home from work. If I can only make sure not to get fired before it is finished...

Their hummus, particularly garlic hummus, is terrific. Just a little more lemon-y than regular storebought and not the overthick goop you normally get.

No. We do most of our shopping at Whole Foods. TJ's is nearby us but we only go there to get a few random things.

Trader Joes is pretty much the opposite of Whole Foods. They sell decent reasonably priced stuff. Whole Foods sells good, way marked up stuff.

Guys,

I've decided to go to the Trader Joe's down the street tomorrow. Thanks for the inspiration!

And Dom, I'll go to the Whole Foods down the street this weekend!

I had a couple of the pre-made buffalo burgers tonight. They were excellent.

I take the Trader Joe's burrito and microwave it for about 1 min and 20 sec, then put some a slice of TJ's cheddar and a bunch of salsa on top and heat for 40 more seconds.

Re: great finds at trader joe\'s

the gazpacho is excellent. clocking in at an astounding 90 calories for the entire container, it's full of flavor. it's awesome to have some in your fridge. when i walk through my kitchen i can hit a few spoonfuls without an ounce of snacking regret. perfect boredom food.

related to the original item, the refrigerated spinach & goat cheese quesadilla is also good. it's a little under 400 calories as well, but it's fairly overloaded with fat so i'd suggest eating it more sparingly. the chicken and cheese (queso blanco) is good as well, around 300 calories with less fat.

Cherry Cider is AMAZING! Everyone should give it a try - you won't be disappointed.

They have a great beer and wine selection - try out lots for a great mix.

All of the food is great.

I thought Whole Foods was just like a pretty standard "upscale" supermarket (similar to Gelson's). So isn't this like saying "I prefer expensive grocery stores with some nice premium brands over TJ's?" Just curious, cause I never go to Whole Foods and wanna know if I'm missing out.

I really like TJ's frozen eggplant, spanakopita and the gyozas (which I think someone mentioned).
