Women really get worked up about baby names

My wife is pregnant again and we were kicking around names for the second kid. If it's a girl, we already know what the name is going to be, but we've been coming up with names for another boy. We have a couple that we each like and the other doesn't and we have two that we both like. One of them is Oscar. When people ask, and we tell them that Oscar is getting strong consideration, they get exceedingly rude and worked up. It's mostly women, whether we know them well or not.

We've had people, including reasonably close acquaintances and as well as people in passing conversation, tell us "Your child will hate you." "People will beat him up." "He'll grow up and change it." "He's going to kill you when he gets old enough." "He won't have any friends with that name." "He's going to grow up with a complex." "People will say he smells."

It's interesting that younger people don't have an issue with this. We've not had a person under 30 say an unkind word. These are grown adults, all 30+ and the majority are 40+ saying this stuff.

They all have this bizarre notion that we are going to be naming him after the Sesame Street character Oscar The Grouch. As if there are no other people ever born named Oscar. Men seem to see this right away -- they've seen or know of Oscar Charleston, Oscar Robertson, Oscar De La Hoya -- but to women? Nope, we're naming him after a sesame street character.

I guess I understand frame of reference, but what the hell is wrong with these women? Why in the hell would they say things like this?

I can't speak to your main issue - but I personally think Oscar is a frickin' awesome name.

Who care's what they think. If you ask them to give you a name, you'll get a different answer from each of them.

Oscar is an awesome name.

I agree. It's far superior to Ernie and Bert, but no quite as awesome as Grover.

Oh, we don't, but we're both just stunned at the way that they respond. It starts as astonishment and ends in anger and they are incredibly shrill the entire time.

The reaction is solidifying Oscar as the choice in my mind.

Oscar is bad, not close.

Re: Women really get worked up about baby names

My wife and I had a fairly spirited debate when she was pregnant with her son. We agreed we would name him "James Donald" after both his grandfathers, but the argument was about what to call him.

I was fine with James, Jim, Jimmy or Jay. My wife really really wanted it to be "J.D." Well, I hate hate hate the initial thing, and I think J.D. sounds like a redneck and/or a mechanic.

So back and forth we went. She finally agreed that we would call him Jay, but as part of the bargain I had to forfeit any input into the name of the second child, at least in theory.

The lucky part is that my wife isn't obsessed with naming our children something that no one has ever been named before, or in choosing one of those currently en vogue "yuppie names" that make me want to puke. We have friends who have actually named their children:

Brock
Avery
Riverson
Lee-Lee

But back to the OP--the next time some woman does this, ask her what her kids are named, and then slam the name right to her face. "Wow, that's 100 times worse than Oscar. Were you drunk when you decided on that one?"

That should stop it.

There's also Oscar Madison ... it's a long way from a great name or one with good associations. I think it's kind of like naming your kid Henrietta or something. Sure, it's a name, but ... eh, it's very old-school, like a century ago old school, and not very sexy.

Did you tell her that it won't matter because his friends will call him whatever they decide to call him, and it likely won't be close to what you want him to be called?

But maybe you should Nelly-ize it and make it Oscurre

For both our kids we kept names a secret so we wouldn't have to deal with the nonsense.

Yeah, Brock is solid. (Edit: for a boy)

Riverson? Not so much.

Also, I have a friend that I desperately tried to talk out of naming her kid "Blaze", with no success. L

I've got Oscar Robertson, Oscar Peterson, Oscar Charleston, Oscar Woods, Oscar De La Hoya, Oscar Wilde, Oscar Grimes, Ossie Davis, Oscar Judd, Oscar Pettiford, Oscar Gamble. Music, Acting, Writing, and Sports - Oscars and everywhere.

The influx of Mexican and other Latin population and births is contributing to a mini-rally in Oscar:

I was with my girlfriend in the car and someone on the radio was named Patience. We then decided which attribute we would name our children.

I decided on Omnipotent.

It's damn near impossible to decide on girl's names with my current gf, because every name was already taken by some bitch she's come across over the years.

This is the real problem. It's either an old girlfriend, some bitch your wife/gf doesn't like, or some hot chick your wife/gf is jealous of. I'm hoping to avoid this (and many other things) by just not having any girls.

Re: Women really get worked up about baby names

Oscar is a good name. The key is to not tell other people what you're thinking about name-wise, because people are always going to have something negative to say.

When my wife and I were married but childless, she said she wanted to name our first female child Olive. I think that's a terrible name for a person, so when we got our first cat I convinced my wife to name her Olive. You can't have a cat AND a kid named Olive, so I win.

We did end up naming our daughter something very non-standard: Sullivan. We call her Sully. I like it, some people think we're weird.

Boy names I have proposed that have been shot down:

Cornelius ("Corny" would be the nickname)
Morris ("Big Mo")

Re: Women really get worked up about baby names

FWIW, it's always better to name your children something that has some meaning behind it, rather then just choosing a name that you think sounds cool or unique or rare.

The later just makes you look like typical yuppie parents that all think their kids are more special then anyone else's kids. That or people will think your wife reads way too many romance novels.

Patrick del Poker Grande 06-21-2007 02:43 PM

Re: Women really get worked up about baby names

I'm not sure how I feel about people who come up with names and then also what the kid's nickname will be ("We'll name him Xxxxxxxxxxx, but we'll call him Xxxx"). I'm pretty sure it's not good, though. It's one thing to name your kid James knowing full well a bunch of people are going to call him Jim. It's a whole 'nother thing to force a nickname in there before the kid's even born.
