LA Touristy Stuff

Going to LA at the end of October. Not exactly a poker trip (bringing GF), but will try to get some hours in at Commerce/The Bike. But...

Long time no LA. To entertain GF, need some tips on restaurants, entertainment (other than poker), etc. We'll be staying in Santa Monica, and will have a car.

All suggestions welcome. Thanks.

1) Drive out to Malibu and eat at either the Greek restaurant there or Nobu.

2) See the Getty and Huntington Library in Pasadena.

3) In Santa Monica, eat at Sushi Roku, Boa steakhouse, or Melisse.

4) Take a stroll on 3rd Street.

5) Take the GF shopping at The Grove.

I second the Getty and the restaurant recommendations. If you're a music lover like me, Amoeba on Sunset will be your mecca.

If you like wine, AOC on Third (not Third Street in Santa Monica). Great date spot, get reservations though.

Go to the Getty Museum in the morning/early afternoon. Bring a picnic, or eat at the excellent restaurant.

If not Third Street in SM, which Third do you mean?

Yes, SM. There's a long thread in one of the other forums, can't remember which, perhaps El Diablo, on stuff to do in L.A.

This one is OK, except you should just leave her there for the day while you try to break even with her while you play cards all day.

Also, Nobu is overrated. Go to the Greek place

Agree on The Getty Center (off of the 405, NOT the Getty Villa off of PCH). It's free admissions, all you pay is $5 for parking. Assuming you're in your 20's, here's a few more:

- Hollywood: Sunset and Hollywood Blvd are standards, but make it down to Melrose and check it out.
- Pasadena (Old Town), Newport/Laguna areas, Santa Monica (3rd Street), Venice/Santa Monica Beach
- Beverly Hills.
- Do some online research for restaurants and bars. The above mentioned locations have a good concentration of night life, so it'll just depend on your taste and budget.

In-N-Out burgers!
man...I wish they had one out in NYC.

I've done that and Fatburger in Vegas. Can't say I was hugely impressed. Still a fast food Burger. Any decent diner burger is better.

1) Browse Chowhound.com Los Angeles Board - more LA food info then you can handle.
2) The original Nobu restaurant is actually Matsuhisa on La Cienega - go there. Check out The Ivy, too in BH just to see and be seen.
3) Getty, yes.
4) If the Santa Ana winds are blowing, the beach will be 80+ and awesome.
5) LA food silliness - Tommy Burger's, In & Out, Pink's, and Tito's Taco's (WLA).

Re: LA Touristy Stuff

The Ivy is a see-and-be-seen place, but the food has always been god-awful and obscenely expensive for the lack of quality. Food is better at Newsroom across the street, and it's a lot more fun, though criminally loud.

In-N-Out is extremely overrated. The burgers are decent for a fast food burger, but they are not even up to Whataburger quality. And the fries are absolutely gross. They taste freeze-dried.

Getty is a must.
Malibu is arright depending on weather.
Culver City if you wanna see some studios.
Hollywood is arright if you have never been there, but there is little to see (unless your are gunna watch the kimmel show).
Beverly Hills has a sick good mall. IDK what its called, but its full of superficial ppl, and spoiled little kids.
UCLA might be interesting to see. Its really close to Beverly hills.

Downtown Huntington beach is fun. Its an 30min drive on a good day from downtown LA. Well worth it if you like beach life and bars.

Other touristy places I've taken friends from out of town to:
- Newport Beach
- LA Citywalk
- Sunset Strip (Saddleranch, Standard hotel, Lucky strike bowling etc...)
- Hollywood sign
- Griffith Observatory
- Marina Del Rey
- Boat ride to Catalina Island via San Pedro
- Santa Barbara
- Venice Beach

also if u like movies and whatever u can goto Universal studios or paramount and check out the backlots...definitely touristy.

I could go on and on, LA is definitely a very touristy place.

Go to the hustler casino, win a couple G's, walk outside, then go for a little stroll in gardena aka compton and give it all back!
