Folding a boat?

It's a sng hand, but I like you guys better.

6 man sng, I got 10h9h on the SB. I've been very aggressive so far. Somewhat passive player miniraises in mp, I call, BB calls.

Flop AhQh9x. Check-check-minibet. I call. BB folds. Turn is a Q. Check-Check. River is a 9. I bet 225 into a 400 pot, he thinks for a while and goes all in for another 1.2k.

What's my play?

Fold!

Re: Folding a boat?

This is easy, I folded. But i'll make it harder. By the river raise, I took some time and looked at a hand he played earlier, nearly the exact way with Aces.

By the river raise, I was 90% sure that he had either AA or AQ. Do I go bust everytime with a Q there?

If you had a queen,,, hard to say. Thats really one of those, "had to be there spots" for me.

Why bet the river there?

Cause he's calling me with AK/AJ there alot.

Re: Folding a boat?

He's also betting with with AK/AJ.
A check/call on the river with a mediocre hand is much more profitable then a bet with a mediocre hand.

He's passive. He never bets AK/AJ there.

Then you take down a 400 pot.

That is meaningless.

If the bet is +EV it should be made anyway.

Bernas 01-18-2006 01:51 PM

Re: Folding a boat?

But it is not + EV compared to a call.
He can come over the top of your raise all in and you lose that bet. Now, you have not only lost the 400 in the pot but you have lost the 225 you just bet.

The only way I make this bet here is if I have the best hand or I think I can bluff him off the pot. In this case, the odds that I can bluff him off the pot are slim and the odds that I have the best hand are not that good either.

So you're saying if we bet and he raises we lose the pot, whereas if we had checked then we win the pot? Uh, no.

Bernas 01-18-2006 03:11 PM

Re: Folding a boat?

No.
I am saying that if we check we have a chance at winning the pot at no cost or at less of a cost than if we bet. If we check and he bets we can call or fold.

A value bet is a bet you make when you expect to win even when you get called. This is clearly not a value bet.

A bluff is a bet you make to win a pot and know you have the worst hand. This is clearly not a bluff either.

So you have to ask what you are trying to accomplish by betting this hand on the river.
