Russell finally signed

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=Aq...p&type=lgns

richest deal ever for a rookie, 60 mil, at least 30 guaranteed

lol raiders

He's rich, bitch.

Ready for this bust, Raider fans?

vixticator 09-11-2007 04:22 AM

Re: Russell finally signed

Did the Raiders gave him pretty much what they would have like 4 months ago? Good job not getting him in camp if this is the case. Oh, it's pretty obvious he would get highest rookie salary ever. QB is most expensive position and he was first picked. Anything less would be not even remotely acceptable.

it makes picking like 8th and lower > than picking with one of the top picks because true franchise players are rare and if you're not one you're not close to worth the money on average, and also rapes teams more than they should be raped for busts like russell.

You just have no clue. This guy has so much talent it's unbelieveable.

His biggest problem is being so good that he thinks he can make the impossible throw. A decent QB coach can fix that in no time, then the Raider have a franchise QB for the next 12 years.

Or we could have spent the cash on an offensive line, Russell isn't going to do anything if he continually gets sacked

The obv answer is to have a set contract deal for each draft slot, like the NBA. No negotiations, no bitching and moaning, just signing the deal and getting to camp on time.

The only issue is position value (for example, a DT would make more than a QB taken right after him), which is a little silly. I wouldn't know how to remedy this. Any ideas?

His decision making is pretty terrible. And thats probably far and away what sets apart great NFL QBs from poor ones.

Re: Russell finally signed

He did have a pretty high completion percentage. I'll admit I didn't watch too many LSU games, or at least none that really stuck with me, but it seems difficult to consistently make poor decisions and still throw for 67% completion percentage.

I think this is a net positive for the NBA, but it does have some side effects. Good rookies are incredible values, so there's incentive to lose. I'm not even talking about the Oden/Durant sweepstakes. Guys like Al Jefferson, Dwight Howard, etc, were some of the most productive players at their position and they're dirt cheap. Teams would be stupid not to try to grab up that talent instead of signing the Z-Bo's of the world to max money.

From the team's perspective. Not from the player's. (Unless you really think Lebron James deserves to be paid less than Joe Smith in each of James's first 4 seasons.)

I watched Russell very closely over his LSU career.

Freshman: made horrible decisions

Sophomore: made decent, though not great decisions

Junior: started at above average decision making, ending the year making very good ones.

I am in no way disputing this. As an LSU fan I wished he had stayed another year. But I still like the guy. If he is a bust, as least he'll be rich as hell!

I'm really just saying, let's wait and see before we declare him a bust. He has not even taken an NFL snap yet!

Yeah, I watched him play for 3 years.

I think part of the reason why his decisions making was poor early in his career was because, as I pointed out, he thinks he can make plays that he can't. As he matured as a player and got better coaching his decisions improved and he threw for a >65% completion.

His raw talent is in the to tier of all NFL Qb's. It's going to be a matter of harnessing that talent and putting it to work.

Plus he's just intimidating as hell to look at IRL. The TV doesn't do him justice.

Okay lets break it down:

1) Completed passes.
2) Talent.
3) Scary black man.

1) Yes, good indicator of success.
2) Meh, he's "talented". I'd rather see him engineer game winning drives and pose than throw passes from knees for half the field. This is why ML>>>VY
3) WTF does this have to do with anything? He's gonna stop Freeney from rushing due to his terror? Is someone not going to pick him afraid of retribution?

I have never seen someone hit full force by a 280lb D lineman, look over his shoulder at him, then look upfield for a receiver, not find any, realize he is going to eventually go down, and throw the ball away to avoid a sack -- all in less than a second.

Eh, whatever. It's impossible to say he will be worth all the money the Raiders are paying him right now. I hope he has a good career, but it seems like drafting QBs in the NFL is an inherently risky proposition. Sometimes you get John Elway, sometimes you get Ryan Leif.

Russell's ok, if he would've stayed for a year longer I'd like his prospects better. He's kinda high variance/unknown for a guy getting $32 m guaranteed.
