2007 MLB Trade Deadline Thread
 

The Brewers and Padres got things going with Linebrink getting dealt for three prospects. I've been monitoring Inman all year. Evidently he doesn't have dazzling stuff and might be a Yusmeiro Petit type. That should still be very valuble. I give the edge to the Padres in this one.

I agree it appears the Padres do well here, as Linebrink has really fallen off (K/9 down 3), but the Brew Crew would likely get a first round pick and a supplemental pick (i.e two top 40 picks as its unlikely a team with a protected pick signs a middle reliever) when they let Linebrink go as a free agent (unless they re-sign him, OMG). Makes thing closer. Are those three minor leaguers (i.e is Iman) worth 2 top 40 picks? Iman's disparity between levels this year is entirely consistent with everyone's worst fears, but he is still 20 and in AA.

they are interested in a top-flight reliever, reportedly gagne. gagne can block trades to detroit, though, and he will likely only go there if they guarantee todd jones will not be closing, since gagne's incentives are mainly based on finishing games.

Quick question related to draft pick compensation. While looking around for the rules of this process, I read that the team losing the player must offer him salary arbitration to get the picks. How does this work for a player that is well past his arbitration years?

If he is arbitration eligible, he is pre-free agency (i.e less than 6 years of service time). This is mandatory if the club and player don't come to terms, because the player is under the team's control for his first full 6 seasons of ML service (unless he runs out of options or is otherwise a minor league free agent).

Pending free agents by definition have more than 6 years of service time on major league rosters, after which time they are eligible for free agency. Their team must offer arbitration (a one year deal decided by an arbiter if the parties don't agree prior - most agree), and the player then must decline and choose to be a free agent for the team to receive compensatory picks. Or the team can decline like the stupid Os did with Latroy Hawkins, who signed with the Rockies and earned the O's "0" draft picks. Most players decline because free agency = more bucks, and more importantly long term deals. The 2006 CBA changed the compensation and classes of free agents but did not change the need to offer arbitration. Here is a good primer on MLB transactional rules, including free agency.

The Padres got in a mess this offseason, apparently believing they had under the table deals with their free agents that they would offer arbitration and the pending free agents would all decline, allowing the Padres to receive draft picks. Todd Walker accepted arbitration, won 3.95 million and the Padres cut him a little more than a month later because the arbitration contract wasn't guaranteed and the Padres paid 45 days' termination pay, or @$987,000. link

This might be wishful thinking, but I'm hoping my Cards can get something for Eck. I love the guy, hustle and grit and toughness and all that cliche stuff, but we need to improve, he's having injury problems, and he's gonna be a FA. Maybe get a prospect or something.

Anyone think a team might be interested in getting the little Eckstein that could? (Hey, he's a proven winner! [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img])

Mets should go for Dontrelle Willis or Jose Contreras before the trade dealine. They should be able to either of them for a relatively cheap price.

This brings up an interesting debate topic. Don't you think it's time we did away with the signing team giving away a draft pick? I'm fine with the sandwich pick, but think about Linebrink. Assuming he's class A, the sigining team would need to pay market value, sign him for multiple years, AND give up it's first round pick. All this for what is a fairly fungible asset.

On the actual case of Linebrink, that's quite a gamble by the Brewers. First, he'd need to be a class A free agent, which I'm not sure how likely or unlikely that is, but it's definitlely a possibility that he's not. Then they'd need to offer him arbitration. That's a risk in it's own right, because if he accepts, he'll get around $6m, which would be a complete waste of money for the Brewers. Then there's the chance that he signs with a team in the bottom half of the standings, only netting a 2nd round pick. I don't know what kind of market there will be for Linebrink if he costs a first round pick. He'll probably want 3 years $15m+, and that's going to be tough to get, especially after his raw numbers take the beating they're going to by going from Petco to Miller park.

I'm not sure that Contreras would be that much of an improvement over what the Mets already have at #5. Particularly if Pedro is a month or whatever away.

The Mets dont need Contreras, hes not very good. The Marlins are still asking for a kings ransom for Willis. Apparently they dont realize hes not very good anymore.

It sounds like the Tribe is about to announce a trade. My Sirius radio is cutting out, but Rizzo (ESPN Radio) just announced that Shapiro has scheduled a press conference for this afternoon to announce a "pretty significant" deal.

I'm expecting it to be Dotel for Francisco, which is fine with me. It's a good time to sell high on Ben, who is nothing more than a fourth OF.

Okay, Cleveland radio says there *is* a completed deal...press conference in four hours, but I'm sure we'll hear something before then. There isn't any info on the deal, but they used the word "significant" at least twice to describe the trade.

Dayton Moore will do better than Francisco for Dotel, especially with the bounty San Diego received for Linebrink. I don't think a team will overpay that much for him, but Francisco doesn't fit the bill.

i hope the mets would get javier rather then contreras and to be honest i really dont think contreras is much of an upgrade (if even an upgrade) over who the mets already have starting plus pedro will be back in a few weeks

Couple of quick notes;

The Padres picked up Scott Hairston for a minor leaguer. I don't know anything about the Rosales, but 26 y/o relief "prospects" aren't a whole lot to get excited about. This should work out very well for the Padres.

The Padres signed Shea Hillenbrand. It's only a minor league deal, so don't get your feathers in a ruffle just yet.

The Devil Rays sent Seth McClung to the Brewers for Grant Balfour. My personal preference is for Balfour. He had more K's with similar control coming up. Balfour was also producing much better at AAA this year. I know he's 29, but he lost a lot of time due to injury. I really like this move for the D'Rays.
