Very doubtful this will drop the numbers enough to guarantee a pro will win. Numbers will be down but all online qualifiers weren't from the US. Numbers will still be very large.

this is really the same as asking "how many sites will continue accepting US players"?

I suspect we'll know a lot more in 2 weeks.

IF all the online sites follow Party's lead I think the number will be really low...somewhere around 1200-1500
Tons of internet qualifiers are not going to take the time to go out and play the one table and multitable satellites. Not to mention that because the prize pool will be lower that will depress the turnout which lowers the prize pool further which lowers the ...you get the picture

2002 had 631 entrants. Under 800 in 2007 is only happening if the buy-in is raised to 50k.

Re: Next years main event numbers?

I still predict 9000+ entrants for the 2007 WSOP Main Event, as Harrah's would be incredibly stupid to leave the WSOP in Las Vegas when the online poker boom is in full force in Germany and France now and will hit both Italy and Spain in 2007, with Asia (China in particular) on deck in 2008.

One would have to expect Harrah's to move the WSOP to a place such as London, where Harrah's now controls the operation of a number of casinos after Harrah's acquires London Clubs International.

Eventually, Harrah's will have the option to move the WSOP to a place such as Macau S.A.R., China, the world's #1 gambling destination, after the number of Texas Hold'em players in Asia (China in particular) ramps up to a critical
mass. Harrah's reportedly is interested in purchasing 18% of Galaxy Entertainment, which operates casinos in Macau.

Oliver,

What is the largest # of players to play in big buy-in event overseas? Is it the EPT events? And if so how many players do they get?

The most for an EPT Main Event was 480, earlier this month in Barcelona.

It sold out. If the venue allowed it there would have been quite a few more.

The EPT in Barcelona was SOLD OUT at 480 due to space availability.

The Barcelona event would have gotten MANY MORE than 480 if space were available.

The poker boom is in full force in Germany and France, driven by TV (The state-run betting monopolies in both countries feel so threatened that they are cracking down on online gaming advertising. Sounds familiar? Europe in 2006 = U.S and Canada in 2004)

Italy and Spain will be next, coming in 2007, with Asia on deck in 2008.

Re: Next years main event numbers?

Jamie Gold will likely be the biggest winner to come out of the poker boom. Even if this new bill doesn't amount to much, I think enough people are worried that it will slow down a lot. I would say the number of WSOP ME entrants drops dramatically, but not below 2500. Also, the guys breaking records as the youngest to win one bracelet, or two WSOP bracelets that have been going on the past few years will stop. Once these high school kids can't get online anymore with their twelve accounts and collusion crews they get together with, there will be a lot less 21 year olds with 6 years of poker experience.

The only people entering next year will be Johnny Moss, Doyle Brunson, and the ghost of Stuey Ungar. And yes Olivert, these 3 will square off in China.

Re: Next years main event numbers?

Olivert, how do you figure that the WSOP entrants will be 9000+ next year? The China poker boom has yet to happen and I don't see 8000+ Europeans all of a sudden signing up for the WSOP ME all in one go. Do you know the percentage of WSOP players are American? And how many of them qualified through sites like pokerstars? I'm sure that it's over 70% of the WSOP players are American AND got their seat online.

I just want to see your reasoning behind your optimistic number for next year's WSOP.

ohkanada 10-02-2006 10:46 PM

Re: Next years main event numbers?

That is basically why I wanted to know the biggest tourney abroad. So he is figuring we are going to jump from 480 to 9k.

I will be completely shocked if the WSOP is held overseas and we had anywhere near 9k.

Re: Next years main event numbers?

and in two weeks I believe we will be saying the WSOP will be a small fraction of its former self, just how small of a fraction, we won't know until next years WSOP. Just very thankfully glad I took the time to go and play this year and be part of such a huge event.

I hear that there *may* be some sort of poker boom that may take place in China. Anyone care to comment on this? Also, Andy Beal is not a poker player.

China poker boom?

It's true that for calendar year 2005 mah cow topped vegas in gambooling revenue BUT i read somewhere that 60% of the mah cow take is from back a rat.

The few Chinese I've spoken with who visit Vegas claim that poker is too "slow".

Some think poker won't ever "take" in china like it has with the rest of the world.

I pray they're wrong.

Re: China poker boom?

4000 is my guess. There will still be some online qualifiers, but not as many. Keep in mind that not only will online qualifying go down, but also there'll be a drop in people building their bankrolls online and buying in. That being said, I think the poker boom is still pretty huge.
