Friend runs super hot...

So my buddy and I are cashing out the other day at some ho-dunk casino that neither of us will ever go back to again (pathetic floor decisions, horrid service, rude dealers, ridiculous rules, blatant preferential treatment of locals, the whole nine yards)...

He slides the cage $950 in red chips shortly after I've just cashed out $2950 in red chips... The lady at the cage is all excited for us and congratulates us on our win.

I get my cash... then the Cashier slowly counts out $1950 and tells my friend thank you... we walk out.

AWESOME.

The funny thing is that this was one of his few "losing" sessions in two months... and the cage made up for it plus some :-)

Not a chance. This casino was so poorly run I would bet my life savings they don't even know where they lost the cash in the system.

Then again... my life savings is a net negative right now... so I guess that's not much of a bet

BTW... in his defense.... he got two horrid floor decisions in the previous 24 hours that cost him about $550.00

So this was kind of a weird karmatic pay-back of sorts... I think the moral test is only on the remaining $450.00 :-)

Sounds like a low-rent casino. BUT, if they have security cameras at their cash out cage, and they replay them and see your friend blithely walking away with the blatantly wrong amount... I wouldn't recommend returning there, ever.

As if he stole $1000.

If she loses her job as a result of giving out incorrect cash, that's her problem, not OP's friend. Whilst it is a 'moral' and 'upstanding' thing to return the money, doing the opposite is not stealing.

You complain (incorrectly and retardedly) about collusion at Canterbury. You go to this place and blast it as just an awful place, implying that you know how to better run things. You then see no problem with stealing $1,000. It is clear that the common denominator in all of these situations is you. Time to take a good look in the mirror.

He didn't find the $1k in the middle of an empty park, and thus had no idea who it belonged to.

He knowingly took something that (a) wasn't his and (b) he knew damn well whose it was. That is stealing.

How did you get so stupid?

how does pbob win the thread?

the money was given to him. If I was given $1000 less by casino staff when cashing out, didn't realise until I got home, would I expect them to give me the $1000 the next day?
Even if they were fully aware that they were up by $1000 the previous day, and knew that it was quite probable that this occured, I really doubt that they would give me my 1000.

And who knows, the lady might even have pocketed the money when counting up for the night and realizing she was $1000 in the black.

Simple facts are: OP's friend was given 1000 dollars. He did not purposely seek the money or willingly take it from anybody. He was handed the money. Holla.

Re: Friend runs super hot...

not sure if this has anything to do with it. i used to play in charity games around town. there was this dude named, umm "carpenter." nice guy. tight (which is a super rarity) and a winner and all. not too many ppl beat the 7$ rake at 5-10 but whatever. hes everyones friend. hes a reg. im no ones friend. im hated. im the youngest one there for the last 2 yrs (this is preboom.) i keep my mouth shut but i feel the animosity.

anyway, its about midnight so its last hand of the night. its 5-10 btw. im just out of college. im the best player the place has ever seen. they dont know this. i never tell them. im just a nervous young guy that doesnt quite fit in. "carpenter" is a reg and everyones friend.

so its last hand. its 11way im in the bb. 8 pp call. i get aa. and raise, someone decides its to backraise and we see hte flop 8way for 5 bets when all is said and done. flop is raggedy and i bet. obv everyone calls. turn is another rag (but really nothing is really a rag at this point.) some ppl fold, "carpenter"* folds or calls. cant really keep track. its hard to describe the last hand of the night in these places. its only midnight. biggest pot of the night. dealer cant keep track and doesnt really care to. its like 5way. river is another seeming blank. a 7. i scan the table. i notice some commotion from the guy next to carpenter. not sure what to make of it. anyway, i bet and carpenter calls. some others call.

obv carpenter has riverd a set of 7s. he didnt raise, i think he had like the 2nd nuts here. weird

hmm. weird. it just felt weird. why was that guy whispering in c's ear? why was c very hesitant? oh well. as im driving my beat up 91 red cavalier home it comes to me. i was ripped off. wtf. i dont know how. but i know it. i knew it just from looking at carpenter. i remember his face and his hesitance. i remember his friends next to him. i remember them laughing. c didnt look comfortable tho. his friends seemed geniunely happy. i hate those ppl and always have and will.

500+ was a lot of money to me at the time. i was still drinking pbr at the time. oh well. only one way to get it back. got to play more. thats what jj and chris and murhpy used to tell me.

so i go back the next day to play. carpenter taps me on the shoulder and wants a word. he tells me what happened. he had intended to fold the turn. but, in the chaos of the hand the dealer had forgotten to much his cards. obv his friends were sweating him and compelled him to snag the pot when his gin card hit.

but he felt bad. he told me he had been in aa for a long time and he believed in honesty. he gave me the pot (tho after counting it im fairly sure it was short, likely the amount he put in, no biggie.)

the point is this guy had not reason to give me the money. i didnt even know for sure i was cheated. he did it bc it was right. and he could sleep better. and it was quite obv the money was important to me.

I wish I was an ex teacher playing 100-200 so I could be the moral compass of the world and right in all situations and scenarios of life.

One day I'll have grey hair and a bad attitude... then maybe my opinion will count.

Till then... I'll tell you the following....

We don't need to get into the collussion thing again, I didn't benefit from this mistake, and it's not stealing (legally)... it's basically a bad beat jack-pot the casino pre-paid :-)

KneeCo 11-17-2007 09:24 PM

Re: Friend runs super hot...

Every definition of stealing I've ever seen requires taking.

Specifically taking what isn't yours without consent, which is hugely different than being erroneously but nonetheless consensually given and then choosing to knowingly keep what you aren't entitled to.

I'm not saying the guy shouldn't have corrected the mistake or he doesn't deserve to be called out for not doing the right thing, and especially called out for not doing the right thing and then bragging about it.

I'm saying if we're speaking English he isn't a thief and he did not steal.

you only show the depth of your idiocy with posts like this.

i am indeed an ex teacher with grey hair, which you imply makes me an idiot. fine. i'm an idiot, but even i know that taking $1,000 that isn't yours is stealing. how dumb do you have to be to not even know that?
