\"The Last Supper\" - Photo at 16 Billion Pixels

"Officials put online an image of the "Last Supper" at 16 billion pixels - 1,600 times stronger than the images taken with the typical 10 million pixel digital camera.

The high resolution will allow experts to examine details of the 15th century wall painting that they otherwise could not - including traces of drawings Leonardo put down before painting."

I've been playing around with it for about half an hour. Very neat and probably the best view of it you will have without travelling to Milan. In fact the detail you see in this image is greater than you could see with the unassisted eye. Looking at the "phantom hand" popularized in the DaVinci Code you can see that it is simply a hand bent awkwardly at the wrist and not some mysterious limb.

That person on Jesus' right still looks like a woman at 16 billion pixels.

Mine does too. You just have to let it load for awhile and it'll start to refocus itself.

also correct me if I'm wrong, but at 100% you're only seeing a 4cm by 2cm square so I don't know what you're expecting it to look like.

The hand actually looks as if it's pulling at the collar of the androgynous mystery character.

Was watching a film while browsing forums. Only now, 4 minutes after loading the image do I realise that the music is from the picture not the film...

Also, fwiw I just see cracks in it really, but still, nice find.

Thanks for sharing this way to see it so detailed. I was amazed to discover that "H9" appears embedded all over the piece. Has anyone uncovered the significance that Leonardo was trying to convey by this?

I believe it had to do with Da Vinci's insight into the modern medical aliments of the 21st century. Specifically with the Hysterical Hyperventilated Hypertensionially Herniated Hodgkinial induced Hypothyrodial Heamatoma'd Hemorrhoidal Hiccup.

I believe he was conveying the optimal first move in Battleship, a game he invented.

and it's also performed by the Swingle Singers--they recorded this piece twice. They're an a capella group that has arranged tons of classical music (particularly bach). The version used is the one that's 3:16 long, not 3:03.

The original piece is taken from Bach's 5th keyboard concerto in F minor BWV 1056, it's the second movement, the entire movement is often heard by itself and just referred to as "Arioso," or sometimes just by its tempo indication, which is "Largo."

That's really cool. I'd like to see some other stuff up close like this.

Also, definitely a chic on the JC's right.
