Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
the oregon coach was fired?
|
Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
I'm sure a lot of teams would love to hire Orgeron as an assistant, wouldn't be surprised to see him end up back at USC.

Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
Baylor coach guy morriss (sp?) is gone. if Utenn loses today Fulmer has to be on the hotseat as well.

Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
Chan Gailey of Georgia Tech was reportedly fired. I'm kinda surprised by this because He was 44-32 with 6 bowl games in a row. They are expecting to do better?

[/ QUOTE ] GT lost 6 in a row to UGA, and that's probably a bigger deal instate than making six bowl games, especially in an era where 6-5 or 6-6 gets you into a bowl. Just getting to a bowl game is no big deal anymore, really. Here in Colorado, the story is Sonny Lubick is out at CSU, but unconfirmed. |
Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
You mean you would be satisfied with losing 5 games and finishing out of the top 25 in a season when you have the best RB in the conference, the best WR in the country, and a top 20 defense?
The offense is terrible. 1998: 426 points 1999: 461 points 2000: 386 points 2001: 405 points *end of good times* 2002: 280 points 2003: 274 points *God arrives to play wideout* 2004: 264 points 2005: 222 points 2006: 349 points in two more games than O'Leary's seasons. 2007: 318 points Gailey always lost at least 5 games. Before him were seasons of 10-2, 8-4, 9-3. Never beat georgia. Awful play calling and game management. The things SE kills coaches for "WTF moran your down nine kick a FG dont go for it on 4th and 5 from the 20". That stuff. |

6 bowl games in a row. They are expecting to do better? [/ QUOTE ] All completely irrelevant games in boise or other random places against the likes of tulsa, fresno, and utah. Which they lost. |
Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
Starting Reggie Ball at QB for so long is pretty much grounds for firing him imo.

Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
the Duke job is open, lol
|
Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
Just as long as the words "The Iowa job is open" don't appear I will be fairly calm. I guess Notre Dame being open is bad too.
|
Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
I was listening to the Jim Rome show this morning on ESPN radio, boy did he rip on Callahan. I guess Callahan tried to get rid of the walk on program and didn't want to recruit in state? College football is better off with him not coaching anywhere, what a cancer. Any word on any of his assistants being fired or anything of that nature?

Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
Houston Nutt reportedly out at Arkansas. I think they said he settled for 3.5 million. Why did he get fired?
|

Houston Nutt reportedly out at Arkansas. I think they said he settled for 3.5 million. Why did he get fired? [/ QUOTE ] Various political reasons along with a very mediocre conference record over a ten year period. Press conference at 6:30 today so we'll see if the rumor is true and maybe gain a little more insight. FWIW, I've heard Nutt is a top candidate for GA Tech. |
Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
Georgia Tech would be well served to look at Paul Johnson IMO. I think he really wants an ACC or SEC job and he's spent a lot of time at Georgia with his time at Georgia Southern. With him coaching the offense and Tenuta coaching up the defense, they could be scary good in a few years.

Is this the hiring thread too? Texas A&M hired former Packer coach Mike Sherman.

Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
I've heard Paul Johnson's name come up the most around here.
|
Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
Bill Doba is apparently out at Washington State. A great guy, just couldn't get it done on the field after his first year (10 wins, including a Holiday Bowl win over Texas). Went 20-26 in the four years following that.
A lot of people are talking about bringing Mike Price back. |

Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
I heard Pelini to Nebraska? Yes/no?
|
Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
I guess Pelini makes sense from the perspective of wanting a defensive minded coach. LSU has produced a lot of defensive talent in the last few years - and they have a couple of more first rounders on this defense, too. But realistically, the LSU Defense has kinda sucked.
|
Re: *Official* coaches fired/resign thread
Bill Doba out at WSU, which is great. His assistants however, are not yet out, which is horrible. The next hire needs to replace Levenseller and Rosenbach or it's all pointless. Still, pretty happy as a Cougar fan that we've broken with tradition and finally nuked somebody in a somewhat proactive manner.

Re: Nutt gone
[ QUOTE ]
Embattled Arkansas coach Houston Nutt resigned Monday, giving up his job three days after directing the Razorbacks to a victory over top-ranked LSU. Defensive coordinator Reggie Herring will coach the team in its bowl. [/ QUOTE ] |
Re: Nutt gone
I doubt this will ever happen, but if Georgia Tech were smart, they'd just rehire George O'Leary. He was much more successful at Tech than Gailey was and I'm sure he'd be happy to take the job as head coach at UCF's not exactly all that prestigious of a position.
In a similar vein, how about Mike Price to WSU? |
Re: Nutt gone
How much is left on O'Leary's contract at UCF? I thought he was locked in for a while, and buying out both Gailey and him may be too much.
|
Re: Nutt gone
Signing GOL would require a $5M buyout on top of Chan's $4M. That's $9M committed before he coaches a game.

Re: Nutt gone
Geez that was quick. What exactly was the problem with Nutt? Is a lot of this based on whatever it was that went on with Mustain? What exactly was that? Exec summary please.
Also, I am back on the "no way it's Ferentz" bandwagon, as much from his perspective (his son will start at Iowa in the fall, according to facebook his daughter is a grad student there, seems to like it) as from ours. I can rationalize his hire if necessary (two of his three bad years occurred when they were just crushed by injuries), so if he hires good coordinators he might be a very good coach...but I'd still rather not have that happen as I think there are better candidates out there. |
Re: Nutt gone
Also, with Nutt at Ole Miss there are now 4 SEC coaches who previously coached at other SEC schools (Saban, Spurrier, Nutt, Tubberville). Dunno what significance that has it but it's pretty crazy.
