San Diego Cardrooms/Casinos

Just moved to San Diego for school. Where are the softest lives games in San Diego? Nicest place to play? I mostly play Lower stakes NL to mid steaks. I guess games from 300-1000 buyin.

if you're 21, ocean's 11 is nice. they have pretty high stakes. viejas is also nice. soft everywhere i would say. the higher limits have more regulars though. you've come to the right place for poker. theres many indian casinos just a short drive away. ucsd? sdsu?

I don't know age, but you got :

Sycuan in El Cajon
Barona in Lakeside
Viejas in Alpine

To give you a little bit of info, I live right by Sea World (Mission/Fashion Valley area). Barona is about 30-35 minute drive, Sycuan is about 25-30 minute drive and Viejas is about a 40 minute drive.

PM me sometime this week if you want to bum a ride for some afternoon poker. It's my last week before I start work and I'll probably be heading out to Sycuan or Barona a couple times this week... maybe even Viejas.

Re: San Diego Cardrooms/Casinos

Viejas and Barona are both 18+. I was never carded at Barona, btw. Viejas has a free, self serve soda machine. I never played nl when I lived in San Diego, so I cannot comment on the quality of play. Most players in California are terrible at every game and limit. Ocean's 11 is one of my favorite casino's in California. Their players card is worthless, but the food is extremely cheap and tasty. Ocean's 11 strictly enforces the 21+. Oceanside is a long drive from downtown San Diego.

I was there Tuesday night and they had a guard at the door carding many people who came in and turned several away.

I was doing quite a bit of people watching while waiting for my roomie to finish playing because I got up big and left the table instead of donking off chips.

Re: San Diego Cardrooms/Casinos

i used to play a bit of live, best places are oceans 11, viejas, and barona. Sycuan is absolute garbage now all of the above host 1k games, so for you, you'd basically be going to viejas and brona switching off whichever u like

Re: San Diego Cardrooms/Casinos

Oceans 11 spreads 2 1-3 nl 300 max games and 2 5-5 nl 1000 max games during the afternoon into the evening. Viejas spreads 2-3 1-3 300 max games and occasionally a 5-5 game. Sycuan usually gets a 5-10 1000 max game going by night.

good luck

The place I play a lot at is Chula Vista Card Club. They offer 8/16 LHE and O8b and a 5/10 NL game. The 5/10 NL is a joke, and it has 2k max buy in. I am moving to sanfran in a month...only reason iŽd broadcast this game to others.

edit: oh yeah...and it is a southern suburb in san diego. closer than all others mentioned to you.

Re: San Diego Cardrooms/Casinos

I'll be visiting San Diego in November for a trade show and definitely will spending some time in a card room- I prefer 1/2 NLHE cash or small buyin tourneys $60 & under. I will be staying at the harbor and will have a rental car so driving an extra 1/2 hour is worth it if the casino/room is better than a closer place.

Would Oceans 11 be the place to go or would a local card room or Indian casino be better suited for me?

TIA

Re: San Diego Cardrooms/Casinos

For the games you request Sycuan is probably best for your tourney and 1/2. Oceans 11 offers 1/1NL (40 maxbuyin) and 2/2NL(100max) games. They also have tourneys in mounrings for the price you are looking for. Best place in San Diego County is Oceans 11 in terms of play and atmosphere.

Re: San Diego Cardrooms/Casinos

I played 2/2 at O11 last night, and it was one of the loosest games I've ever been in. At least 80% of the hands were raised PF, most w/re-raises. One sick hand about 10 minutes after I sat down and had grown my $100 to about $180 I got dealt pocket 9's. About $35 went in PF between 3 players. Flop is 2, 4, 5, 2 spades. Player 1 is the table maniac with about $400 behind checks. Player 2 bets $30, I call with my 9's, Player 1 calls. Turn is a red J. Check, $30 bet, I call, player 1 calls. River another 4. Player 1 checks, player 2 tanks for about 2-3 minutes & bets out $100. I figure my 9's are toast. Maybe someone was playing A3 or A4, or has a bigger pocket pair. I fold. Player 1 calls w/23... and WINS a HUGE pot.

yeah ive been going to oceans since i was 18. my buddy has been going since he was 16. both of us looked young for our ages too. this was back in late 2002, just before the poker boom hit. they are a bit more strict now, esp. on weekends. I got carded once in the three years i played under age.

hint: just walk around to the back where people smoke and go in the back doors.

Sycuan is a total dump and I would stay away from that place at all costs. My suggestion is to go to Oceans or Viejas.

I like Viejas the best for two reasons (which seem to work for this guy also) :

1)1-2NL has a $100 max buyin.

2)1-2NL is the lowest NL game in Viejas.

Oceans is cool, but they spread a 1-1 $40 game, so most of the newbie horrible players will be on those tables, whereas in Viejas, they are stuck playing 1-2 $100 max.

Just be sure not to win a jackpot if you're under 21. They take proof of ID for tax purposes and won't pay you your share if you're under 21. Plus, they kick you out.

Village Club Card Room, I've played there a number of times. The 1-2 NL game is extremely soft. The only downside is it can be really tough to get in a game at times. There are some crazy characters there also, can make for an interesting experience.

I live right around the corner from Palomar (yeah yeah if you've been you can give me a hard time about my 'hood' later) but have yet to play there. From what I've heard it's the best action in SD. It is a small room, probly like 12 tables? I haven't been in but I've driven by it a ton and the front is all glass (this has a name...like bay windows except the entire wall is glass?). It always looks...hm..."busy". It could be crowded but it never really looks jam packed. Anyway, like I said the action there is sposed to be the craziest anywhere, no idea about the structure of their games though. Sorry.

I've never been to Ocean's 11. Sycuan's an alright place, you have some decent players and a lot of horrid players.
1/2 to 2/5? That's a big jump, if you can afford 2/5 I'd stay away from 1/2 completely. 1/3 is always an option.

Albert Moulton 11-04-2007 11:34 AM

Re: San Diego Cardrooms/Casinos

Ocean's 11 2/3 NL with $300 max buy-in is probably the best, IMO, because it has 100 bb stacks.

Most 1/1, 1/2, and 2/2 games in SD (that I know of) are 40-50 bb max buy-in games. Sycuan, for example, is 1/2 with $100 max (50 bb stacks). And the 1/1 at Ocean's is $40 max (40 bb stacks), while the 2/2 at Ocean's is $100 (50 bb stacks).

Im used to AC where the usual choices in NLHE are 1/2 then 2/5. I would only play 2/5 if the game was particularly juicy as it would be a BR jump. If there's 1/3 then I'll check that out.

1/2 is $60 max at Sycuan. It's so horrible to play. When I finally bought into 1/3 for the full buyin, I was so elated to play poker.

Sycuan sucks, its incredibly smokey on your 3 mile jog all the way to the poker room.

Barona is cool, since its where I get my food when I don't want to cook anything. It also has really soft games and a lot of players who think they're good.

Since the wild fires I put money online and have rather played poker in my living room instead of driving all the way to the Indian Casinos.
