5NL Video

I made a 5NL video for my blog, just wondering if there was interest for it here in the beginners forum. My plan is to make a video for every level I play at except for 2NL which is essentially the same as 5NL in terms of play (playing minimum 10k hands per level, 25-30 buyins for next level before I move up, almost at 25NL right now).

I butchered a few hands in it and it's tough to play 4 tables and explain my thought process when I was used to playing 12-16 tables at that level but I thought some beginners might find it useful as I have yet to see a 5NL full ring video. And hopefully I can get some advice to help me improve as well.

If anyone's interested I'll post it in this thread.

5NL Video - 173 MB ~50 minutes - playing deepstacked for 200BB ($10)

You might need to download the Techsmith codec here to see it: http://www.techsmith.com/download/codecs.asp

how do i view it?

It's an AVI file so you can open it in Windows Media Player. You might have to download the techsmith codec (link in my last post) if you can't see the video.

Downloaded it, will watch it later today if I have the time.

The best media player you can have is VLC Mediaplayer. It plays almost all formats by default and uses little resources of your computer.

Just watching the vid, I'll comment you later.

Re: 5NL Video

Ok, saw the video and first of all wanted to thank you for making the video.

The video is really insightfull for microstakes grinders when you explain your lines and give general guidelines for microstakes.
It's also insightfull how you incorporate PT-stats in your decision making.

I think that beginners, like me, are at firsthand clueless how to work with PT/PAHud and how to interpret its data. Hell, I can't even seem to get rid of this bug that shows mucked cards after a hand at the wrong seats (anyone know how to solve this?).

Where did you get your knowledge about PT from? Maybe there are some other sources besides Pokey's infamous PT-topic.

Criticism: I think there are other, more experienced persons who can better comment you about your playing style, so I won't say anything about it.
However, I have some minor technical issues:
- Can you assign a preferred seat to each table when you play? It makes it a little easier to follow the action.
-Also, can you up the resolution/quality of the vid? When I watch the vid fullscreen stack size no. and PT-stats are a little bit blurry.

All in all a very nice video and I'll keep an eye out for the next video on your blog!

Make sure you're using PAHUD version 1.19.1+ and then use the settings under "preference / pokerstars / preferred seating / seat #" to pick which preferred seat your using.

Re: 5NL Video

is this $5 buy in?

JH1 11-28-2007 06:12 PM

Re: 5NL Video

Hey Captain thanks for the comments. Good point on the preferred seating, that would make it a lot easier to follow I'm sure (thanks for showing me how to do this Blixx, never looked at it before).

I did obtain most of my knowledge about how to use PT from Pokey's posts and a couple of others in the stickies in the NL forum (can't remember if it was micro or full ring stickies, but there's lots of good stuff in both). The rest you eventually gain with experience and you start noticing similar situations.

SCA this is a 5NL table, but 5NL and 2NL are a bit of an anomoly at Stars. At 2NL you can buy in for $5 or 250BB and at 5NL you can buyin at $10 or 200BB. I believe every other level lets you buyin for only 100BB, as far as I know.

IMO this can be really helpful for the "beginner" at these lowest stakes - and I personally consider the 2+2 beginners to not really be beginners, as they are already reading this forum and therefore are more likely to have a better understanding of the fundamentals and therefore should have/soon will have an edge over the majority of the players playing at these stakes.

If you are a true beginner, by all means buyin for $5 at Stars 5NL or $2 at 2NL to get a feeling for playing with a normal stack. But for those that are comfortable, I fully encourage you to buyin deepstacked considering that you have an edge over so many of the other players. Your implied odds are HUGE.

Do you guys prefer downloading a large AVI file or would it be better to post these to YouTube?

JH1 11-28-2007 06:19 PM

Re: 5NL Video

Oh and I can up the resolution if you guys are fine with a little bit larger download for the next one, probably ~ 220MB for 800x600 for the same time length.

youtube would be better I think

Re: 5NL Video

Ok I just looked into YouTube and apparently I can only post 10 minute segments and I don't really want to have to cut videos up into 5 or 6 parts, so that sucks. I think I will have to scrap that idea for now, might come back to it later.

I am currently rendering the same video at 1024x768 and I compressed the colors a bit more for those that haven't downloaded it yet. The HUD is much more readable, but the tables themselves look crappy like they do in the cardrunners videos to save on file size (that's not what's important anyways, amiright?)

I'll hopefully have this up sometime this evening. It'll take a little while to upload.

Re: 5NL Video

So now that I have 1/2 the responses to my own post, I will add one more

You probably noticed that I tried to hide my screenname with a little box, this attempt has been in vain as I have just been informed that the title bar for each window says "logged in as..."

I am S-M-R-T.

I do not really want to out myself yet, so I have removed the video temporarily. I will be rehosting it first thing in the morning when I get home, it will be a larger resolution so the HUD will be more visible and hopefully I can obscure my SN - win/win situation for everyone right?

For the 50+ of you that have already DLed it, please don't exploit me too much, my graph is going in the right direction and I don't want that to change

Link will be back up this morning. I am currently reloading a better version of the video that has better resolution so you can see the HUD better.

Re: 5NL Video

Since you asked me not to, I now know I MUST exploit you.

Or not, you are not the kind of player my style of play exploits anyhow really. I assume that by and far we would mostly stay out of each other's way at a table while eating fish.

JH1 11-29-2007 10:08 AM

Re: 5NL Video

Hey Nsight, I'll try to stay out of your way too! I'm actually kind of serious, I make a note if someone plays like me (ie. betting out with sets, betting good draws, exercising pot control, basically a good TAGish 2+2er). My note says: "!!PRACTICE AVOIDANCE!!"

Currently re-uploading video for you guys to Megaupload, should be up soon. It's not working there right now because I deleted the other one. It's worth the wait, you can actually read my HUD on this one, it's 1024x768 and I compressed the video to 256 colors instead of 16 bit otherwise it would have been over 300 MB.

I have now successfully avoided giving out my screenname to the rest of the world - I think - unless Stars is hiding my screenname in yet another plain view spot - I really hate those pop up comment notes that say where you're from, had to restart the video a couple of times cause I hovered over my own name, lol.

Re: 5NL Video

I liked the video too. Also since you want to hide your name, it was listed in Pokertracker as well on the left side where they show all the screen names.

Re: 5NL Video

Hey guys I just got it onto Megaupload again, it didn't upload properly this morning so I had to do it again. It's better resolution and I got my name covered so here you go:

Not New but Improved 5NL video 163MB

CaptainSubtext 11-29-2007 04:46 PM

Re: 5NL Video

Hmmm, I have sound but no picture.

Even when I installed the Techmsith codec; sound but no picture in VLC Mediaplayer, Windows Media Player and WMP Classic.

I know you wanted to hide your screenname, but covering the whole video in black is ridiculous. Hehe.......

JH1 11-29-2007 05:54 PM

Re: 5NL Video

That's weird runs in WMP for me with video and sound. Can anyone else confirm this?

Both vids work fine for me on WMP. I downloaded the original and then followed your link for the codec, ran it and the video works fine. I just downloaded the improved version and it plays fine as well.

Hi hater, I'm sure most of us including myself have jobs.

JH1 11-30-2007 01:50 AM

Re: 5NL Video

Yeah, I actually make about $20 an hour (Canadian $ FTW) at my job, so this is actually a hobby for me right now as I don't make that much at poker. Have to grind a bankroll and improve though so I can eventually make more, right?

I normally don't 4 table 5NL either, when I was at 5NL I was playing 16 tables so my hourly rate is actually considerably more than McDonalds pays even at 5NL.

By the way Crazy, were't you banned a couple times already? What happened?

+1 for sound and video working. Hopefully I learn something. Just had a rough session at 10NL.

Re: 5NL Video

Ok, than it's me. I don't know why, but for me the new vid only seems to work in Quicktime player. Oh well,......

PT-stats and stack no. are crisp and clear now. Tnx JH1.

JH1 11-30-2007 07:47 AM

Re: 5NL Video

No Prob. I don't have a cardrunners subscription, but from what I've seen I always wondered why the table graphics looked so crappy. Now I understand why. Full resolution with no color compression = 450 MB lol, I could probably almost send you a DVD in the mail before you could download that. Bit of a tradeoff that's necessary I guess. So if everyone's happy with the way it looks, I'll keep those settings for the future.

Any comments on any of the hands, like how I butchered the AQ hand at ~21:50? I know there were some others I played really badly as well. Or comments on hands that I hopefully played well?
