Facebook WTF?

I'm not on there, but still:

'Social-networking Web site Facebook Inc. is quietly working on a new advertising system that would let marketers target users with ads based on the massive amounts of information people reveal on the site about themselves.

Eventually, it hopes to refine the system to allow it to predict what products and services users might be interested in even before they have specifically mentioned an area.

As the industry watches the Palo Alto, Calif., start-up to see if it can translate its popularity into bigger profits, Facebook has made the new ad plan its top priority, say people familiar with the matter. The plan is at an early stage and could change, but the aim is to unveil a basic version of the service late this fall.'

I don't use it, I don't care. It seems like a good chance this will drive users away and thus a bad idea. JMHO.

you already stare at ads all over, this is just a way of better targeting ones for the relevant audience.

imagine if you went to somewebsite.com who has banner ads...think they would rather you see ads about mens clothes, sports, and poker or ads about tampons and PMS?

While you've mentioned twice you don't use it, you still haven't mentioned what you don't like about this.

You do realize that if it actually works it will be telling you about stuff you actually interested in. Advertisement for things that actually interest me are fine, its all the other crap that makes ads a nuisance.

This is completely standard. Myspace is nothing but an advanced marketing device. It logs huge amounts of information based on the movies and music you like, and your interests.

It has also come to my attention that advertisements often exaggerate or otherwise distort the information they present about the products they advertise. Can anyone confirm?

Re: Facebook WTF?

Did you think they made the site just for fun?

Obviously they are going to target the ads as best they can. Every site does it - it just depends if they choose ads beforehand based on demographics, or run split tests to see which work better.

I don't see what private information they'd have that you'd really have to worry about losing. Everything they use is being taken from stuff people are posting to a public site anyway.

ugly girls on facebook usually put a picture of themselves with a hot friend as their profile pic as to deceive you as to which one they are so they get more attention. it's disgusting.

This is just Nader propaganda. I can't think of a company that would make a false claim about one of its products.

This new advertising thing sounds awesome to me. I've always been a huge fan of targeted ads because something I actually see stuff I'm interested in and I click on it. I hope they do a good job with it.

ND,

They have been doing this for a long time, it's just that the ads have been very generic in nature, thus low CPM. All Facebook users get all sorts of sponsored promos and stuff (sign up for a credit card, sign up for this sponsored group, etc.). The main thing they are talking about doing is utilizing the info they have better so as to target ads better, increasing response rates and thereby being able to charge higher ad rates.

ElD, gotcha, I didn't know they already did that. I still think it will drive away users [using intensely personal info, as opposed to a/s/l], but perhaps I am wrong.

Link to WSJ somehow was removed. I blame...Dids.

Re: Facebook WTF?

ND,

It'll probably largely be based on collaborative filtering and network relationships and stuff, so I suspect you are very wrong and the vast majority of users will be 100% unaware that something is happening.

Example: Instead of getting a "Chase College Credit Card" offer, one person gets a "College Football Branded Chase College Credit Card" offer and another gets an "American Idol Branded Chase College Credit Card." I think it will be very rare for people to react negatively to this sort of stuff given the level of advertising they are already subjected to.

Re: Facebook WTF?

I'm not getting the problem with this. This isn't more advertising, it's better advertising. Eventually the internet and TV will get to the point where you won't see many ads that you aren't the correct target for.

If you are in the "I hate advertising" camp, remember, 99% of free media wouldn't be free without advertising. Advertising, especially targeted advertising, is much better than paying a subsciption fee for every website, TV show, etc.

That's fine. Doesn't mean there is no problem, just because you and other people are okay with it. Problems certainly exist in ad models that you are currently unaware of.

Your response is reminiscent of the 'marketing myth,' ironically enough. Just because you like a product/ad about it, doesn't mean others do or it will be successful. Even if all of your friends agree with you.

I'm not. My realization that most internet firms would not be able to 'monetize eyeballs' led me to sell all my tech/media stocks in March of 2000. Lucky/smart I don't care either way. The ones that were able to do so, survived.

All of the Facebooks/MySpace/Friendster/bebo/whatever models will not survive, most will fail.

Re: Facebook WTF?

As long as nobody points it out to the users, they won't know the difference. I strongly disagree with OP's point that the new advertising will drive away users and sink facebook. FB is becoming more popular all the time as legions of young kids sign on because their older siblings are on or because their friends are. I think everyone has lived with the internet for long enough that we're used to ads. Our eyes automatically pass over the uninteresting ads and we only ever notice an ad if it has value to us. This new ad tech may even make FB worth the $4B they're asking for.

Yeah, I don't see what the problem is. I always see ads on myspace for 'bob dylan ringtones.' First time I noticed I thought it was pretty cool. Now it's apparently Eric Clapton/Fender Stratocaster. Fine with me.
