Halo 3: Always matched against people much better

A few of my friends come over basically every night (we're neighbors) and we play Halo 3 on xbox live (Unit 674 incase you've run into us) We have 4 people on the same screen, and our rank was I guess Seargent grade whatever the highest is for that rank. We ALWAYS get pitted against people with two stars or three stars, always people much higher than us in rank, for the past week. Our team is filled out by people lower in rank than us. Its like this every game, and while we're all pretty darn good at the game, we can't beat these commanders and brigadiers and colonels. Anyone know why we're getting set up this way? It's so frustrating playing against people and getting raped.

don't play in a group of 4

Re: Halo 3: Always matched against people much better

Is that really what it is? This is something new, it was never like that before.

Re: Halo 3: Always matched against people much better

that rank is just total games played... it does not relate to actual skill like the level numbers do.

The game matches you against similar skill level players, not people who play the same amount as you.

Unfortunately this is unavoidable in social matches where there is no skill level. You guys should seriously be better than them if you're all in the same room with perfect communication.

Taso 10-18-2007 04:45 AM

Re: Halo 3: Always matched against people much better

I would think there is a fairly strong correlation between games played and skill level; as more games are played (increase in rank) peoples skill level rises.

We assumed that it was matching us against similar skill level, but how is the skill level determined? I ask because its always us with 1 or 2 really bad players on our team, versus 5 players as good or better than us (and I think we're all really good). What are "level numbers"?

Thanks

Re: Halo 3: Always matched against people much better

As I've said, and others have before me, rank means nothing. There are guys which huge number of games that just suck dick. People with high skill levels compared to low games played are very good.

Re: Halo 3: Always matched against people much better

@games played vs. skill

There are people on ISC (scrabble) who have played a TON of games (thousands) who are terrible. I'd imagine that the same is true for Halo.

To get good at something you need to practice and hone specific skills, not just play it.

Somebody in 1 thread the Halo matchup system is the best ever, I still prefer the server matchup system that HL2 and other PC games have. Yes it's hard to have your own personal server but that's not really a huge issue for most people.

Social matches just find 4 people to play against your 4 people and doesn't take anything else into consideration. They are supposed to be for warm-up or when you have multiple people playing on the same account, but some people use it to pwn because they are level 45 or whatever and want to beat everyone by 20.

Don't you find that there is a wide range from the worst player playing and the best? I don't like that about social. I'd rather play people that are about my skill level.

Re: Halo 3: Always matched against people much better

Ranked matchups, especially at levels 10-25 seem very balanced. The lower level matches are filled with low ranked people, who either suck or are hella good at other games. You do need to pay attention in the lobby and look at your opponents highest rank and exp.

Social matches are anyones guess, as they grab anyone.

A good way to gauge someone's skill, especially if they are an officer, is to look at highest rank. I have seen plenty of LT'S with highest levels in the 11-15 range. Not very good.

My highest rank is 23, and I am a LT 2nd grade. I need a bit more exp than I am a Captain.

That being said, anyone who is higher than a captain, is probably pretty damn good.

If I could play the 360 with my normal mouse and keyboard from my computer I think I'd really get into Halo 3, but without it I can't play it over CS or TF2 right now. I'm pretty good at CS, and I can't get the hang of the 360 controller to get good at Halo or maybe I can't put the time into it. The aiming is just so much harder than with a mouse to me.

its pretty easily actually, you just need some practice.

Yea there is a much wider range, but i prefer the people who play Social much more. I don't care about rankings i just want to have fun and having people scream "R34 GET TO THE BACK [censored] DOOR!!! MOVE IT!!! HAUL ASS!!!!! GHOST INCOMING!!!!!" over and over again is not my idea of fun. I have no problem with people helping out and such, but when its forceful and they respond with Gym Class Hero yelling it gets old very fast.

I have honestly never been a part of a game like this. Most of the time people don't talk at all which is very frustrating, but I find that when people do talk (and not the 12 yr olds that won't shut the f up) it's mostly 'guy has a sword by the green room' or 'guy is invisible w/ the rocket launcher by the invisibility'. I kinda wish I had someone who would take charge and try to win as a team...

I've played TF original, HL1, HL2, CSS, CS original since 1.0, and TF2 now, and that's been over 10 years so I'm used to a mouse and keyboard over a gamepad for FPS type games. Just like I wouldn't like playing an RTS like SC, C&C or WC2 on an x-box either b/c I'm not comfortable with the controls.

lol @ I'm not comfortable w/ the controls. Halo is arguably the best FPS console game and it's been out for 6+ yrs. So if you ever thought Halo would be a fun game you would get over the fact that they aren't mouse/keyboard controls.

Sorry, but I hear this all the time from people who play computer FPS on how much they would kill me if they had a mouse and keyboard, but I just laugh and tell them it's a good thing then that we're playing on an Xbox...

Are you really that much of a console nerd. I just said I'm not comfortable playing FPS on controller, not just Halo. I didn't play Halo 1 or 2. Why do you feel the need to degrade me b/c I don't like it. I don't have any problem with you playing with a controller, I just prefer a mouse and keyboard b/c I've basically only played FPS for the last 10 years on the computer.

my personal experience with the two is this. M/K is easier for shooting, controller better for overall gameplay control. Add in the headset and basically controller pwns the [censored] out of keyboard.

Yeah, so I'm sorry that you said you could get into it except for the controls and I took that to meaning you liked the game, but because you didn't have the comfort of the mouse and keyboard you wouldn't play it. Now you're saying you don't like it. Well, could you get into it or not? The controller shouldn't really be an issue. And you must have missed this part:

For me thats the main problem with the M/K setup. The buttons aren't easier to use. I remember playing in one game and trying to jump at an angle while reloading or throwing a grenade. It was like stabbing my eyes balls.

I play Madden. I don't hate Halo either it seems like a cool game, I guess I'm just set in my ways. I didn't have regular Xbox if that means much and only 1 of my close friends have ever been into the game. I have a 360 and I play a lot of games on it including Madden, Winning 11, etc. I actually have the game and have played online and I'll admit I suck at it. I have had TF2 for less than a week and I have enjoyed it more. They are different games though.

Ok since this thread is completely derailed could someone explain how to handle someone being directly behind you in this [censored] game. I've just started playing a Halo game for the first time really (also my first console FPS) but it seems like being behind someone is a much bigger advantage than it is in any other FPS. I just can't turn around quickly and maintain speed. Maybe I just suck with the controller but it seems like everyone has this problem, anyone have any tips? Or am I just going to have to suck it up?

Also I really enjoy the game but the map selection and design is really really weak. They need to get map packs out asap or I'm just going to stop playing. I've gotten like 100 deathmatch games in and I"m pretty much sick of every small/medium sized map.

They are working on new maps right now. Also, try downloading some map variations from bungie.net.
The major advantage you have is firing the first shot. Very little your opponent can do on his own to kill you if you get a decent head start.

Turn your look sensitivity up (mines @ 7, default is @ 3), jump and turn around. Try to get around a corner and crouch. In H3 (much more than H2) getting the jump isn't always the necessary thing. Knowing your surroundings will get you much further in this game than H2 IMO.

The jump/turn idea is good.

Mainly I'd say use your radar and don't let someone get so close behind you that you have no way to avoid them.
