Stupid Wii widescreen question
I have component cables for the Wii, and I have it outputting at 16:9 and in 480p. However, when I play a game or whatever, my HDTV (Sony 50" rear-projection LCD) still displays it at 4:3 with black bars on the sides. I can use the TV remote to force it to stretch it out, and I guess it looks ok - I guess I just want to make sure that this is what I'm supposed to do. My TV switches between widescreen and 4:3 by itself with every other device I use so I'm slightly confused by the fact that I have to do this manually.

Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
Check the settings on the Wii. You might have it set for 4:3.
|
Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
a) double-check that wii settings has it at 16:9
b) double-check that u are playing a game that is widescreen, as not all wii games are widescreen (dumb publishers) |
Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
My Toshiba DLP 50" changes the screen settings every so often back to 4:3. I just put it back on full and it works. I'm in the same boat as you, as I have no idea why the box decides to pick one or the other.

Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
It's def on HDTV/16:9, and looking on Google it appears that very few games (and none of the "big" ones, which are the only ones I have right now) don't support 480p/16:9.
When I change to 4:3 in the menu I notice that the menu options fill the whole 4:3 screen, but when I change to 16:9 they become a little more squished in the 4:3 screen and there's extra room on the sides, which leads me to believe it's correctly switching and I just have to tell my TV to stretch it out. |
Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
Actually, doing some research, it appears that 480p in widescreen is supposed to output in 720x480, so if the Wii is only outputting 640x480, then even if it looks right when stretched out I'm losing resolution, which sucks. Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
Yes, your TV is on the wrong setting.

Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
For the rest of you guys, is the Wii actually sending a 16:9 signal? When I hit the display button on my TV it says it's receiving a 480p 4:3 signal, even though (I've checked 5 times) I have 16:9 set in system settings.

Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
u sure u have it set for component cables?
and ur tv does pass-through so it does resolution of whatever device is plugged into it? |

[/ QUOTE ] Yes, resolution is set to EDTV/HDTV and widescreen is set to 16:9. Yeah, my TV does pass-through; my Xbox shows up in 720p, my 360 and cable box show up in 1080i, without me having to change any settings to make them appear that way. It's a Sony 50" LCD rear-projection (KDF-E50A10). |
Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
Ill ask a PS3/360 WS question here.
I play normal DVDs on my Widescreen HDTV on both and the vast majority of movies still have bars. I thought WS TVs were supposed to eliminate bars. Is this common or am i doing something wrong? |

[/ QUOTE ] My tv is setup to automatically switch back and forth and does it for the wii. So for example, if I turn to NBC during an episode of the office it'll have bars but they go away if I switch the NBC HD channel. When I switch inputs to the component cables for the wii it automatically does it in widescreen. Again for the Wii it automatically works in widescreen mode. I have this tv if that matters. edit: also I'm using 3rd party cables. |

The aspect ratio is usually indicated on the DVD box. |

[/ QUOTE ] dvds should have top/bottom bars, but not side bars that is because there are a variety of aspects that films are shot in; the wider the dvd aspect, the larger the top/bottom bars |
Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
I always knew most DVDs had different ratios, i guess i just figured WS TVs would be set up to allow most of them to fill the screen.

Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
if it fills the screen, then u can't be using the same ratio as the movie, so something is getting stretched or cropped...
ur tv is 1.85:1...if u play a dvd that is 2.21:1, then if u had it fill up ur screen, u'd miss the 2.21-1.85=.36 on the sides...it would have to just be cropped off so u have 3 options: a) watch with bars on top...this is preferred b) stretch pic vertically to fill screen...u don't lose any of the picture, but people look taller c) zoom to fill screen...u lose the sides of the picture so yes, ur tv is setup to allow u to fill-up the whole screen, u just have to put it in zoom or 'stretch to fit' or whatever they call it mode |
Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
no comment, everything that needs to be said has been already.

Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
Well, I'm still confused as [censored] as to why my Wii refuses to send out a 16:9 signal Nintendo's forums are busto so I don't really know where to go for help. I've seen the same problem alluded to by other people but none of them really explain it beyond "oh hit the wide button to stretch it", but like I said, if some of you guys are getting native 16:9 output, that means it's displaying at 720x480, whereas mine just stretches a 640x480 picture right now and thus is an inferior picture quality. Which sucks.

Re: Stupid Wii widescreen question
Goofy, try wiichat.com forums. Unofficial, but one of the largest communities for Wii.

[/ QUOTE ] Ah ok, so since the majority are not in the WS exact format, the bars are present. I guess every now and then someone does make it the proper size, every once in a while one will fill the screen without hitting zoom. |
