I'm cautiously optimistic. I wouldn't be surprised if we go 6-10 but I also wouldn't be surprised if we make it to the conference championships. I'm excited about the D; we have a lot of talent there, we still have Lebeau, and Tomlin comes from a D background. Offense seems solid, but I said the same thing last year. Hopefully the o-line doesn't suck again. I didn't get to see any preseason games, but I heard special teams were a mixed bag. If we lose to the Browns in the opener, I'm pretty confident the whole season will suck. Go Stillers!

My biggest concern, as it is every year, is the secondary. I really hope McFadden can emerge and Ike turns it around, but I'm not counting on it.

As for the line, I've heard good things about Simmons this year, but he's been pretty terrible over the past couple of years. Of course that didn't stop us from spite-signing him just to piss off Faneca.

Re: ***Official 2007 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread***

bones, nice opinions. WhoIam, no way the Steelers go 6-10. We ran so ridiculously unlucky last season when we were probably a 10-6 team that I think regression would make this team 8-8 again.

The secondary is a nightmare as usual, but I have my fingers crossed about McFadden as well. I'm looking forward to the emergence of Santonio Holmes under the new supposedly pass friendly offense, as I think the Steelers have really underutilized their receiving corps since I've followed them. The thing I'm most worried about is Tomlin, as new coaches are pretty much always a crap shoot.

I'm pumped to see how they can do under Tomlin. I was soooooooooooo mad when they announced him as their new coach. I was hoping that the Vikings would fire Childress and promote him after this year

Re: ***Official 2007 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread***

I like everything I've heard about about Tomlin in training camp. He seems like a real hardass which is exactly what this team needs after an embarrassing and unmotivated last season. This guy wants to win, he doesn't care about hurting anyone's feelings and he doesn't have favorites the way Cowher did. I'm curious to see his demeanor on the sidelines. He's seemed very reserved in interviews but hopefully he's more animated during the game.

I'm not predicting 6-10, I'm just saying I wouldn't be shocked if it happened. New head coach, a new O coordinator no one was really happy with, questions about the o-line and secondary. I also wouldn't be shocked if everything comes together and we pwn this year. This is also the year we get to find out if Ben is really the chosen one.

The Steeler Fury message boards are fantastic; most of these guys have forgotten more football knowledge than I'll ever know.

Re: ***Official 2007 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread***

1. The Steeler Fury message boards are fantastic.

2. From what I read, Cowher always had a hand in the defense. It'll be interesting to see what Tomlin and Big Dick LeBeau come up with. There's no way Tomlin, who broke in as a d-backs coach, and LeBeau, one of the NFL's all-time leaders in interceptions, can't get our secondary to play their asses off. Tomlin's big strength is supposed to be his teaching. Plus, Troy's healthy.

3. Ben was [censored] up last year. That's all there was to it. I expect a huge year out of him, and a huge year out of Santonio.

4. The Steelers did have some bad luck last year. A couple of breaks, and they were a playoff team. Not a good one, but they could have made it. Baltimore won like five flukey games last year; McNair is a year older. The Bengals are awful. Plus, we get to play the third-place schedule.

5. Tomlin's the real deal. He's all business. There's no way they won't play hard for him. Plus, he's moving into a pretty sweet situation. Veteran team, established qb, a groomed holdover at OC (who I read is very tight with Ben), and a damn fine DC. All the team needed was some fresh blood at the top.

6. The only problem I see is the o-line. But this might not be a very big deal, since we may be seeing an entirely different offense this year. Plus, Ben looks in shape, and the guy is damn elusive and even harder to bring down. Plus, with Cowher gone, we might try running different running plays for Parker instead of THE SAME PLAYS WE RAN FOR JEROME BETTIS. That drove me crazy.

7. I forsee 12-4. 25-1 to win the Super Bowl. I have placed my wager.

This doesn't hurt either. Two cream-puffs on the road and three mediocre teams at home. One couldn't come up with a better adjustment period for a new HC.

Re: ***Official 2007 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread***

As nice as it was to score points, I was really impressed by the defense and our ability to put some pressure on the qb by the front 5. The coverage on the outside seemed solid and Farrior was all over the middle of the field, just barely missing about 3 picks. He's sooo good when healthy.

Sepulveda was amazing, Reed had at least 2 touchbacks(!!!), and and Rossum seems solid, which is a nice change from the Colclough/Reid/Holmes debacle of last year.

With Buffalo coming to town next week, Ben should get some more target practice. If we can establish Santonio as a legit deep threat, it should really loosen up things for Parker.

I'm really excited about this season and I hope it's not just the post-Cleveland-thrashing glow.

shane88888 09-11-2007 12:08 AM

Re: ***Official 2007 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread***

Touchbacks are up across the league. It's not just Reed, unfortunately. Sepulveda is the man.

I'm a bit worried about Buffalo. They could be seriously fired up next week, or they could be asleep. I have no clue what's going to happen; at least they're at home.

Lol the only reason I can think of to worry is if your fantasy opponent has Parker. It's gonna be ugly.

Re: ***Official 2007 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread***

It also blows my mind that Mularkey (the former TE) and Whisenhunt (also a TE) used the TE less than Arians (the college QB) has/has promised. For a QB like Ben, proper TE utilization will be huge.

We have two good TE's. This year's going to be fun.

That reminds me...a bad Jets team in 1992 pulled a stunning upset in Buffalo after Dennis Byrd was tragically hurt (as a result the Bills didn't get homefield & had to smoke the Steelers in 3Rivers in the playoffs ).

But yah, I don't see it. Emotion really only has an effect on the defense, where the Bills are ridiculously undermanned. The best player on the front 7 is a rookie MLB. They have a 3rd string OLB starting because the 2nd stringer who was a career backup safety & recently converted to LB got injured. Oh and you can move their DL with a leaf blower. Hope you're right though!

Really solid performance all around. Kickoff coverage was pretty weak, but Mcgee is a top notch returner, so could just be that.

Also seeing the worst team in football score 51 on Cincy is promising.

Re: ***Official 2007 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread***

kickoff coverage was sorta weak, but remember on the long return he had his entire foot out of bounds and didn't get called.

really well played game. aside from the early pick, ben looked SHARP. he's really proving that last year was an aberration due to the extended time off from the accident and appendix removal. he never really got comfortable. now he's just on top of everything and playing well.

i'm really impressed by pittsburgh on a whole, even though buffalo's offense was pretty pathetic aside from lynch.

i definitely believe the steelers have returned to 2004-2005 form. remember, they were 15-1 in 2004, big ben's rookie season, and then super bowl champs in 2005.

this is a very solid core group that is a great team.

I want to see the Steelers play a good team but they played very well thus far. Think offense missed a lot of TD opportunities against Bills, that game should have been a total blowout. Willie Parker is pretty great. Defense is solid but doesn't seem quite at world beater levels of a few years ago yet, maybe has the potential.

If not for a blown OOB call on a kick return, they would have shut out the Bills. Cleveland is Cleveland, but last Sunday showed their offense isn't completely inept.

Anytime you essentially pitch a shutout, your defense is damn good.

Anytime you have a big lead, and still hold the opposition to 7 and 3 points, your defense is damn good.

With Cowher gone, LeBeau is letting the secondary play a lot tighter. So far it's working.

So far this year they've definitely been bringing the heat less and relying on the zone more, although that's probably been a function of being up by so many points. Of course against Buffalo all you have to do is put 2 guys on Evans with some deep safety help and forget about all their other receivers.

Parker looks like a much better player than the 2006 or 2005 versions, but I'm a little worried about the depth at the position given his current workload.

The line in front of him still needs work. Mahan is not able to play at anything remotely near Hartings level. We will have problems if we get to the playoffs and meet someone with a real nose tackle, or before that in the Balt and Jax games.
