best logos
if this isnt't ELDF worthy, please move it to The Lounge!
I was driving between L.A. and Vegas earlier today, seeing lots of corporate logos along the way, and it got me wondering: what is the very BEST LOGO in the world? This is probably the most recognizable: http://content.answers.com/main/cont...rches_sign.jpg Now, the Golden Arches are certainly ubiquitous, but aesthetically speaking it just can't be the BEST. I've always thought this was damn good and probably my favorite: http://pressmart.net/blog/uploaded_i...svg-750104.png what say you? |

Re: best logos
Graphic Design class has taught me that the golden arches are indeed the most worldy recognized logo followed by Nike, with Coca Cola being the most recognized logotype.
|
Re: best logos
The Apple logo and the Nike logo are clearly tops. Instant brand recognition with no words involved and they look good in an array of colors and environments.

Re: best logos
I do think the red Coca-Cola logo is brilliant. The new can has removed the orange, for a simpler look. The marketing, and design always interests me. The polar bears for Christmas adverts is a reminder of their brillance and my enjoyment for their beverage.
The arrow in Fedex is badass. from wiki, "An interesting case is the refinement of the FedEx logo, where the brand consultants convinced the company to shorten their corporate name and logo from "Federal Express" to the popular abbreviation "Fed Ex". Besides creating a shorter brand name, they reduced the amount of color used on vehicles (planes, trucks) and saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in paint costs. Also, the right pointing arrow in the new logo is a subliminal hint of motion." I also like the vodaphone, the red sets it off. |
Re: best logos
Dom,
It's hard to argue against ones where people pay a premium for the privilege of having that logo stamped on their crap. Nike is super high up there. Polo pretty up there too. |
Re: best logos
M,
Coke may well be the best of all time. The fact that some fairly subtle shapes/designs can evoke an image of Coke is a pretty huge logo success. |
Re: best logos
D,
If you're going to say Polo, one should add, Lacoste, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada (sport). |
Re: best logos
I don't know how to host an image. but would add BMW logo. Simple, identifiable, good looking and reflects the origins of the company.

When you can pull an ad like this off, it's gotta say something about the strength of your logo. |
Re: best logos
yeah that is pretty cool.
el d - polo? wtf? |
Re: best logos
In terms of best straight up emblem, I've got to give it to Nike. The fact that a ton of people tattoo that thing on themselves is testament to the power of the image.
If I may go on a tangent, I'm reading a pretty cool book on branding theory and it's effects called 'No Logo,' read by both advertising executive and adbusters alike because it is so damn good at explaining exactly how branding works. Among the most powerful brands outlined in that book are Nike, Coca-Cola, and McDonalds, but the author says that the Mac-Daddy of corporate brand identity is Disney, which curiously hasn't been mentioned here yet. While their logo doesn't spring to mind as easily as the swoosh or the golden arches, their brand identity is really pretty powerful when you think about it. Growing up, Nike and McDonalds were cool stores, but Disney kind of transcended being a corporation into just being a part of childhood which is really freaky. |

I've always liked the Milwaukee Brewer's logo, with the MB and the mitt.

Re: best logos
This is an interesting topic. I took some graphic design classes for fun, and my professor told stories about the ridiculous amount of money some designers are paid to make logos. I think some big corporations have paid amounts in the healthy six-figures (maybe even more, can't recall exactly) for one logo.
Also, Nike only paid $35 for the swoosh logo in 1971. |
Re: best logos
i never noticed the brewers logo was M B before. i guess i never really looked at it. there are a lot of sports logos like that.

[/ QUOTE ] Me either. Now I'm not going to be able to look at it without seeing the damn thing. [/ QUOTE ] This was done on purpose. People have asked why FedEx didn't make the arrow a different color, or shade it, so you notice it instantly. The reason is once it gets pointed out, it sticks in your head and you notice it everytime you see the logo. If it were more obvious, ironically, you would pay less attention to it. It's a brilliant way to get you to think about the logo for an extra split-second every time you see it. Also, the $35 for the swoosh is interesting and true, but it should be mentioned that the graphic artist responsible got an envelope full of Nike stock a few years later in gratitude. Edit: Realized the subtlety of the FedEx logo is discussed in the linked article. Oh well, if you didn't click the link, it's an interesting factoid. |

And I'd venture to say that the others you listed are in no way on the level of the golden arches or the nike swoosh. |
Re: best logos
I really think the wu-tang clan's symbol is brilliant. It's obviously very similar to the batman logo, but it is so genius for a rap group to have their own logo. Although I love wu-tang's music, their logo/symbol is admittedly a large reason I became so obsessed with them in high school; it successfully creates a wu-tang culture and it's the best thing the group could have done to sell records. I apologize for not posting it, someone please do that for me so everyone sees how awesome it is.

Re: best logos
I hate the Expos logo... for some reason it pisses me off.
Another one I hate is University of Miami's (and I went there for Christ's sake): http://www.ncapublicaddress.org/uMiamiLogo.gif What is it, a U? Wow, the only school in America with the word "University" in its name. How original. Better highlight that fact. |

Nike destroys imo. However, close competition from:
