House for rent; evaluate the pics

I'm about to post my house on Craigslist, any comments on the accompanying pics? Too many? Does the backyard look too crappy? I can take another (that one was taken last August when the grass had turned brown) but I'm lazy.

Not pictured: 2nd bathroom, basement.

Re: House for rent; evaluate the pics

Back yard pic is pretty bad. If you have green grass now take another one. The patchy grass also attracts your eye to the rotting fence.

Does the 2nd to last pic show a diagonal scratch on the ground or is that a weird shadow effect from the blinds?

Also, is it bad to have your dog in the pic? Do you want to highlight the fact that a dog lives in the house - this might turn some people off.

Otherwise the pictures don't really show much at all. I don't know if it is standard but it is hard to get a feeling for any of the rooms from these pics.

Hope these comments help.

Re: House for rent; evaluate the pics

I'd say definitely dump the last picture because the yard looks like crap. You don't want someone to be turned off right away because of it. Let them come see the place first and be into the actual house before they see a negative like the yard.

I'd also dump the third picture, or take a new one without the dog in it. If people see a dog, that could scare them off right there.

I'd dump the picture of your computer. I don't think it adds anything to the impression of the house and seems like something I wouldn't want advertised. I'm probably overreacting, but like I said I don't think you gain anything so might as well ditch it.

I'd also take a new one of the backyard.

It is a little slanted. We also live on a slight hill so that could be adding to the effect a bit.

Take a new picture of the backyard.

The left side of the house looks like it's sinking in the first picture for some reason.

edit -- Also, zomg the pictures of the dog and computer are freaking me out!

Also FWIW the yard is a huge plus, not a negative. It's big and completely fenced (and the grass is green at the moment).

I'll re-shoot this.

SC,

Can't help but notice that the 2+2 forums are up on the right monitor. Way to represent!

Don't have anything to add that hasn't already been said, except the front of your house looks to me like the front of 90% of the houses in horror movies.

I won't be putting my address in the posting. People need to call to schedule an interview.

I was trying to show the office, and the natural light we get through the windows with that pic. It's a hard room to photograph well.

I don't care about the monitors. However, even though I'm a dog person and seeing that a dog lived in the house isn't a thing to me, there are MANY people who hate dogs or are turned off by them. They'll automatically write the place off because of it.

I wouldn't lie if asked if a dog once lived there because some people are allergic, but I also wouldn't "advertise" the fact.

Paul B. 06-25-2007 12:39 AM

Re: House for rent; evaluate the pics

If you decide to put up pictures, take exceptionally good ones because most people will make a decision before even seeing the place in person. Either that, or go with the "less is more" approach.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't really like any of your pictures -- don't take it personally. They make your house/rooms look small and cramped, and obviously you should want to achieve the opposite. Create open space when you can (like moving the coffee table) and try taking shots from different angles. If that doesn't work, you might want to invest in a digital camera and a wide angle lens, which will allow you to fit the entire room in one shot, as opposed to just one corner.
