Odd / weird foods you eat, most people haven\'t heard of

With the ethnic diversity in this group, I think this may have potential. (Title says it all)

My mom's side of the family is a good chunk Polish, residing in Northern Michigan. Every time we went up there for the holidays when I was a kid, we would play euchre and eat pickled bologna. It is about a 2" diameter bologna sold in rings, that if straightened would be about 12-14 inches long. Kogel's is the most popular brand up there, but living in Chicagoland, I cant find it unless I get into eastern Michigan. (Detroit area)

We usually cut it in 1/4 inch slices (about the size of 2 or 3 poker chips) and ate it on a saltine cracker. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM gooooooood.

Anyone else ever have this?

I'm looking forward to the asian oddities and delicacies, as well as the eastern european stuff. If you can provide places they are available online or speciality stores you know of, please post that too.

Jamaican beef patties. They're not odd but they're really good and I don't think most people have heard of them.

I ate fried squirrel at an extended family get-together. Rural Missouri. Hunt that day. It tasted very good. Completely plausible as a main course.

Maybe squirrel isn't weird.

I eat the standard jewish foods like chopped liver and gefilte fish. My girlfriend eats aged, salted duck eggs, dried squid, pig feet, chicken feet and seaweed with just about anything and by itself. I am sure there are many more things I am missing. I like eel but I don't think that is very odd as well.

there is nothing odd or weird or unusual about jamaican patties

i would say the oddest thing i eat is peanut butter and honey sandwiches. i also dip potato chips in ketchup which people seem to think is very odd, but it makes perfect sense.

Not sure about in the states but up in Canada Jamaican patties are standard fare, and also delicious.

I eat weird [censored], just whatever I have on hand, and usually enjoy most of it. I recently grossed out my sister when I was visiting and hungry, and made a bowl of rice, bananas, leftover chicken, boiled egg, and tabasco. It tasted pretty good

They're made from pork...bits...and stuck in membranes to stay spherical. And you bake them in onion gravy. Interesting. They are from the UK, where i live, South West England.

AND i had to rehost the image because of their name, it came up censored. Ridiculous.

This thread is not really delivering as most of the responses are common. If you really want to see some odd/weird food watch a show called Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel. But only if you're not squeamish.

Link

Here are the top ten least palatble:

Durian is an extremely odoriferous fruit with custard-like flesh.

Klia is a mystery meat that is salted, dried and preserved in its own fat.

Mangrove Worms live off of dead wood pulp – they are eaten raw.

Callos is a casserole made with blood sausage and tripe.

Coconut Grubs is larvae that live in dead palm trees.

Menudo is soup made with tripe and beef hearts.

Goose Intestines on Bean Sprouts is essentially Goose guts.

Nutria in Sauce Piquant is a large semi-aquatic rodent.

Soup No. 5 is a soup made from the back and testicles of a bull.

Haggis is sheep heart, lungs, liver mixed with oatmeal and stuffed in the sheep's stomach bag.

And this list doesn't even have the duck embroyos or stinky tofu that I saw on a recent episodes, really disgusting.

This one isn't going to deliver either, but 30 years ago probably would have.

Calamari. Now practically every restaurant on the planet has it on the menu but 25-30 years ago it was pretty obscure and if you weren't Italian probably had no idea what it was.

We only had it once a year, Christmas Eve when my mother tried to stay traditional and have an all fish/no meat meal and the hi-light would be stuffed calamari in tomato sauce with pasta, yum.

So now my two sisters are the first to get married and neither one marries an italian and now we're at our first xmas eve with these guys. So she serves it up and it looks like everyone is enjoying the calamari when I say "Reg, I'm surprised you like squid". He spits it out and pushes his plate away and everyone has a good laugh.

Next xmas eve my mother breaks tradition for the first time ever we have meat as she makes a standing rib roast.

I had to travel through Jamaica Queens during my 4our years of high school.

I used to enjoy eating a Jamaican Beef Pattie on coco bread while drinking a Kola Champagne soda.

Peanut Butter + Syrup on toast.

For flavored chips, Herr's with Old Bay Seasoning are pretty good.

My biggest seller is city chicken. Think Breaded Pork Chops on a stick. Also Halupkies are my third best seller. Pork, Beef, Rice rolled into balls wrapped in cabbage simmered in a tomatos based sauce.

Yeah, using honey is pretty common. As a kid I ate it constantly, and even now when I use jelly I still use honey much of the time.

i don't know how weird it is, but my buddy used to live in the jamaican area of brookly, and lived by this place, that had these things called double doubles (actually that's how we ordered them, i don't know what they were actually called.

they were these kinda, sweet fried bread, folded and filled with a spicy chickpea pureé. they were absolutely delicious.

Good call, NT...those are great. One of my favorites is Saltibarsciai, Lithuanian Cold Beet Soup. It's made from a base of buttermilk. Awesome in the summer:

Saltibarsciai
(Lithuanian Cold Beet Soup)
This traditional Lithuanian soup (meaning "cold beet soup") is stuffed with crisp and tender textures--all of them bold in flavor--and delivered in a refreshingly cold and sour buttermilk broth. Serve ice cold as a light summer meal to 4-6 people with fresh boiled potatoes, also sprinkled with dill.

* 8 cups cold buttermilk
* 1 medium cucumber, sliced into thick matchsticks
* 3 medium beets, boiled, peeled, and cut into thick matchsticks
* 2 eggs, hardboiled, sliced into matchstick shapes
* 1/4 cup scallions, chopped
* 1 Tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
* salt and pepper
Garnish: chopped fresh dill http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...t/barsciai.jpg

Ankimo, which is monkfish liver pate, you can get it in some Japanese restaurants.

"The liver is first rubbed with salt, then rinsed with sake. Then its veins are picked out and the liver is rolled into a cylinder and steamed. Ankimo is often served with chili-tinted grated daikon radish, thinly sliced green onions and ponzu sauce. Ankimo is considered one of the Chinmi (delicacies) of Japan."

I'm a big fan of lychees. They are a small fleshy fruit with a thin, tough shell. It's hard to really describe the taste, but it's somewhat like coconut milk.

I ate that right on the beach on Jeju Island Korea.
They dive for them and keep 'em alive in tubs waiting for you to order.
Then they kill it and serve it immediately with hot sauce.
