The Ultimate Fighter / UFC thread

About to watch first ep of TUF. From the previews, Matt Serra definitely comes off like a punk and Hughes just gives off this vibe like he's a real champion. Looking forward to this season.

Tonight's UFC PPV is the first one in a while I don't really care about, probably not going to watch it.

Tonight looks pretty cool to me, griffin-shogun and sanchez-finch should be sick fights. Respond to your PM foo

Wasn't Hughes a cocky d-bag on the last season of TUF?

Re: The Ultimate Fighter / UFC thread

All,

Hahhahahahaa. Matt Serra just seems like such a joke of a coach compared to Hughes after the first episode.

During the fight, Hughes guy on top in guard, Hughes: "Move around so I can see what'd happening"

During the fight, Serra guy on bottom in side control, Serra: "OK man, OK, OK looking good!"

The submission, what a joke. He reset that triangle like 5 times to get it locked in.

I hate matt serra so much. Everytime I think about him being a title holder I go on megatilt.

As for tonight's ppv, I'm excited to see Liddell again, and I think Griffin vs Rua should be fun

Re: The Ultimate Fighter / UFC thread

4/5 of the fights on the main card are almost guaranteed to be good/enjoyable. I can see the Machida fight being somewhat boring. As far as TUF, Hughes definitely has a big edge on Serra in many regards.

El Diablo 09-22-2007 08:30 PM

Re: The Ultimate Fighter / UFC thread

AJ,

Liddell vs. Jardine. I dunno, maybe I don't give Jardine as much credit as he's due. I just figured Liddell would beat him pretty easily.

Shogun v. Forrest. This one I'd like to see. I love watching Griffin fight.

Fitch v. Sanchez. I dunno, I'm kinda sick of Diego and his fights. The ring girl he's engaged to is really hot, though.

Machida v ? - hadn't heard of opponent

Tavares v ? - hadn't heard of opponent

Re: The Ultimate Fighter / UFC thread

ElD, the Rua/Forrest fight alone is garunteed to be worth the price you pay for the PPV

Jon Fitch generally has exciting fights, so that'll be well worth watching

Jardine/Lidell, here's a fight where both have to show up big, so expect to see fireworks

I've never been a fan of machida. He's very much a lay and pray type of guy who wins on points in the end, but his fights are insanely boring. outside of him though, all of these fights look to be exciting, so the PPV should be worth spending money on

AJFenix 09-22-2007 08:53 PM

Re: The Ultimate Fighter / UFC thread

Tavares is fighting Tyson Griffin, of whom I've seen 3-4 fights and all were very good/exciting. His recent fight against Clay Guida was honestly one of the best MMA fights I've seen.

The Fitch vs Sanchez fight is more about Fitch than Sanchez, I don't really care about Sanchez either, but Fitch is apparently a beast and it should be good.

Jardine vs Liddell should be an entertaining, straight up slug-fest, kinda like how on the last UFC they paired up Kongo vs Cro Cop and kicks from both was pretty much all that was expected. Here its the same, except with fists. I doubt its gonna last very long, but don't be surprised if Jardine catches Iceman with something, as from what I've seen Iceman doesn't keep his hands up and exposes himself a lot (which lures people into coming after him, and he lands a counter and wins).

Machida avoids getting hit a lot ala Mayweather, and his opponent is a judo guy, so I can see it being a snoozefest, but it could be good. Machida seems like a guy that would just be really hard to beat.

I'm no expert, and these are just my opinions, but to me it looks like an enjoyable UFC. To be honest, I doubt were gonna see a bad UFC card anytime soon, as they go out of their way to provide entertaining pairings.

Hooter's used to show all the UFC fights, but they aren't playing tonight's fight. Is there any way for me to find out where in Los Angeles it's playing? There's no way I'm gonna pay to watch it streamed on the internet. If someone in LA wants to invite me to their viewing party, you won't regret it!

I have a tough time watching UFC events with other people. I've done alot of MMA/BJJ and I love the technical stuff. My friends/people at the bar are usually like "wow the ground stuff is so boring, i want them to punch each other!" where as I'm more "omg did you see how he passed that guard!"

For this reason I am more than happy to sit at home and watch by myself...while I drink beer, eat ridiculous amounts of chips and just enjoy all-out couch-potato slobness. Awesome, I'm so excited

i considered not even watching this season because i can't stand hughes or serra at all.

saying hughes is anything more than a cocky punk bastard is more than i can stand, but next to serra he does look ok.

i just hope some really good fighters come out of this season. any guess on who serra wants to kick off the show?
it was in next week's previews.

btw. i would love to watch gsp whip serra and get some revenge and/or have bj penn crush either one of these fools.
if diego wins tonight does he get a shot or does he have to go back through josh koscheck to get a shot at gsp?

side note: jardinne grew up in butte, mt. which is like the irish tough guy central spot/drunk fighting/mean ass white boy capital of all of the northwest. i asked some butte punk/tough/fighter guys about him and no one knew anything about his tough guy reputation from there. that does not bode well for the dean of mean.
should be fun tonight. later. J.

A list with phone numbers for verification is posted here.

I did make the post so I cannot speak to its accuracy.

Regarding the OP, Serra is a tool who has no place as champion and I look forward to the imminent end of his reign. Also, this is a by far the greatest reality show because unlike all the fake conflict and posturing on other reality shows, people get punched in the face (repeatedly) on this one.

Very few guys that get far in the UFC were moron tough guys. It seems to take a lot of intelligence to excel in MMA in general and the UFC in particular. Remember how many guys in TUF 1 had Masters' or grad school?

The PPV named "Knockout" didn't contain a single knockout. I think the two upsets show there is a lot of parity in MMA.

Tyson Griffin fight awesome once again.
Forrest Griffin = wow.
Jardine: It just pisses me off that it was a split decision. Not sure what the hell that one judge saw. He should be fired on the spot. I enjoyed the fight, and Jardine earned it.
A relatively boring victory for Machida, no surprise there
Sanchez/Fitch was relatively close and solid.

Overall a great UFC I think.

i am very aware of the technical side of mma and the intelligence required to excel at the highest levels.

it was a bit of a joke mixed in with the fact that they both
"agreed" that it was going to be an old school slug fest. that meaning being a tough guy did have some bearing.

anyway he def. fought a great and very smart fight. J.

Re: The Ultimate Fighter / UFC thread

All,

Thanks for talking this up and convincing me to get this.

Watched it w/ Boris and a couple of other friends after a big night of drinking. Wow, what an entertaining set of fights!

Tyson Griffin fight was awesome - was great seeing him just escape from all those sub attempts at will. I'm a fan.

Machida fight was sorta boring, but OK.

Sanchez/Fitch was great to watch, and Fitch really impressed me w/ his poise and strength. Diego looked like he had some submission attempts locked in pretty good, but Fitch really never seemed to be too worried.

Forrest Griffin. Wow, awesome. Just always love watching his fights.

Jardine, Liddell. Didn't really get the split decision. Thought Jardine clearly won the last two rounds. He looked really impressive and Liddell seemed to be almost confused, really didn't seem like he had a good idea of how to deal w/ Jardine. Very surprising. Another fun fight to watch.

Why do they call that guy Shogun when he's from Brazil?

Re: The Ultimate Fighter / UFC thread

Given that UFC the organization was setting up for a Liddell vs. Silva fight, I am glad that the judges gave Jardine the decision. After the screw job in London, I wondered if UFC was going to just hire French judges for fights where they wanted a certain result. Frankly neither of them looked particularly good, and I am starting to wonder if Chuck is being too much of a celebrity and not enough of a fighter, especially given that he is 37.
To me MMA has an inherent advantage over boxing, of which I have been a huge fan, in that the submissions give every fighter the equivalent of one punch knock out power. Every fight can end at any time if there is the slightest mistake, and also gives huge comeback potential.

Cheered when i saw that real time...

to whomever asked...Griffin beat Shogun...It was pretty good forrest wasnt going crazy like vs bonnar and whatnot, much more technical and picking spots...at the end of 2nd they were both just exhausted and I expected forrest to knock out Shogun, who was literally walking around iwth his arms STRAIGHT down. didnt happen however.

Also, [censored] all of u with no love for Diego. the man is an animal. mad props to fiych for beating him.

Was also the first time I saw that dude tyson whatever, he was really impressive.

edit: Hughes is good and im sure his coaching will make serra's look like a joke. Serra is a cocky, worthless POS who doesnt deserve the title he has and it gonna get his ass beat down by hughes after the season.

Glad you got this PPV ED. This card was sure to be outstanding. Some of the outcomes were shockers, lots of drama for this PPV. I absolutely loved it. It's actually one of the better cards in a long time.

This season's TUF should be great going by the previews. The first episode was hilarious. The doctor's office scene was absolutely priceless LOL! Should be a very fun season.

4sp,

The doctor's office visit was a joke. That guy was imo just looking for camera time. I mean, I'm sure he's a tough guy and all and really wanted to fight, but he was just overacting for the camera. He knew he wasn't fighting with a broken elbow. The big giveaway was the doctor, who clearly wasn't even slightly concerned by the outburst.

Yeah LOL. He knew he was getting kicked off the show with a broken elbow so he decided to go out with a bang. LOL, still very funny.

Anybody agree with me it's time for a Forrest vs Rampage for the title? I think they should strike when it's hot. Forrest and Rampage are the most charasmatic fighters the UFC has, this would draw big money. His win over Shogun has cemented himself as a top level fighter, I don't think I've ever seen a bigger upset in MMA history.

For those of you who haven't seen some of Shogun's previous fights, here's a video of him just destroying the current UFC champion Rampage Jackson. It's a total beatdown. I definetely agree that moron tough guys just don't make it and excel in this sport (ie Tank Abbott). MMA requires too much dedication in your training, a variety of techniques and skill to be learned, and applying good gameplan and strategy to defeat your opponent.

It is definetely not the type of sport a drunken brawler or doorman can walk right into and succeed.

First Ultimate Fighter 6 Episode

For the first TUF episode, it was great! Very multicultural too. We got Borat just losing it on a doctor, and milking his 15 seconds of fame. Then we got a Soprano's episode, where Tony turns on one of his own for tapping out. An absolute comedy fest!
