Would any of you move to LV in my situation.

I'm seperating from the military in the next few months and am planning on using the GI Bill to finish my degree, about 60-70 credits. I currently live in Maryland but am debating moving to LV and play 1/2NL to pay for apt, food, etc while in school. I'm rolled for 1/2NL, but never played alot of 1/2NL online, mostly all in AC which I faired well. I did however beat 25NL and 50NL for a descent win rate( which isn't saying alot) over 100k hands. So would any of you make the move in my shoes.

Shoes-

Rolled for 1/2NL
8k Savings
6 months unemployment LOL after discharge
Really no furniture or asetts to move.

Cons

I don't know ANYBODY in LV
It can get hot

My plan

Find a cheap room to rent from craigs list, Under $500 including utilities which I would pay up front for 6months-12months. Play 40 hours a week. Profit and move up.

If ur not a very materialistic person, with your situation it can be done. If all else fails, you havn't invested too much time there and can go to Plan B.

I'm a bit confused - do you plan to go to school in LV while also playing poker full time? If not, when you do plan to finish school?

I think going to school while playing poker part time sounds more reasonable.

Re: Would any of you move to LV in my situation.

You can almost certainly make more money playing online, with less variance. If you can crush live 1/2 hard enough to build a bankroll to crush 2/5 while also paying living expenses, then you should have no trouble with .5/1 to 1/2 online.

Re: Would any of you move to LV in my situation.

I am confused that anyone would think just because someone can beat live games they would be able to easily beat online games. Online games are much tougher than live games - 1/2 NL games online usually 2 people see the flop. 1/2 live in vegas something like 4 or 5 often see the flop.
Completely different games.

Does the GI Bill pay for a dorm room? If so, I'd do that. Free (sort of) room and maybe board, not to mention all the young girlies walking around.

Re: Would any of you move to LV in my situation.

I don't see why you would not go in an instant.

Rolled for 1/2NL -- good.
8k Savings -- no worries, you can always fall back on this.
6 months unemployment LOL after discharge -- you even have a steady income that won't eat up your time.
Really no furniture or asetts to move -- going to LV isn't going to be a hassle at all!

Cons

I don't know ANYBODY in LV -- well, you probably don't know anybody pretty much everywhere. So unless you plan on spending your life living down the street from mom and dad, get out and meet some people. LV people eat, drink, sleep just like the people in Maryland.
It can get hot -- yeah, it does that pretty much everywhere in America during the summer.

I say give it a shot, or spend the rest of your life (living close to mom and dad) wondering if you could have made it in LV

I don't know why you'd want to go to school in LV. From what I read here, UNLV sucks. Also, I always felt like the NL game is better in AC based on what other people have said. AC is a poker town, LV isn't really, especially during hte off season.

He said he's a winner over 100k hands online.

And if you can't beat .5/1 online then you probably aren't strong enough to really crush live 1/2 enough to make a good enough hourly rate to support yourself.

Re: Would any of you move to LV in my situation.

Brettster,

I basically did this last summer - took some classes at UNLV and played poker the rest of the time (I think you're going to finish school at UNLV, right?) - although I had to come back to PA in August. I had a blast and it convinced me to move out to LV and play full time, which I'm doing in two weeks after graduation.

I definitely think you should do it. You have the bankroll and no one is depending on you. Why not go? You can't roll the dice like this later in life.

Feel free to post/PM me with any questions about UNLV or whatever.

Re: Would any of you move to LV in my situation.

It might sounds crazy, but I'm doing the same exact thing. I'm a winning 2/5 and 5/5 NL player live. I get out in about 6 months from Hawaii, and I'm moving straight to LV. It's been awhile since I played consitently, so I'll probably move down for awhile until I get back into my game.....but I figure this is the only time in life I can take a shot at something like this since I have nobody else but myself to support. More than likely, I'll be taking online classes though, instead of going to UNLV. That might change. My degree and poker is my focus. Good luck if you go through with it! Maybe I'll see you at the tables.

Re: Would any of you move to LV in my situation.

I would LIKE to get in 40 hours a week, but I'm going to put school work first. I'll either take classes through UMUC which should have a program out there or UNLV. My furniture basically consists of a bed and desk/computer. I'd most likely sell it and buy something out there since its a waste to haul just a bed across the country. I've considered AC especially since my parents actually live about 45 mins away. However, its AC and I think I would most likely hate it. Anyone that says AC has better action is rediculious. Vegas has 10x more drunk tourist that come in everyday.

Without a doubt I think LV is better than AC. Are you going for undergrad or a masters? As long as you clear over a 3.0 GPA undergrad your good to go. UNLV is a recognized school. And yes Im from the east coast and I only been to Vegas a couple of times. First time in Vegas I got schooled playing cards. Than I went to the internet and I practiced. Most of my play is from the internet, but I play home games and obviously the casinos. I got a bunch of books(2 + 2) and I worked very hard with my game. Played at a bunch of casinos and internet. Went back to Vegas and never took a dime out of my bank acct for trip expenses because the money was at the table. I played live at AC, Vegas and so forth. If you apply yourself you'll have a good time making money in Vegas. A couple of times around I beat a bunch of games in Vegas and I also didn't mind playing with the locals either. I'd also move to Vegas too if my family were in that area in a heart beat. Nice weather, lots of card games and the card players there are hungry, but they are also cool. Do think you should live in a dorm to have lower living costs and you can do more school work. Get roommates when you make friends at school. Than you can move off of campus and work on poker while doing school and get help for rent. 1/2 NL is big. Its spread every where. You are well rolled for 1/2NL with comfort room. If you move try 1/2 NL at Paris, Sahara, and Mandalay Bay. Wild players and you'll have lots of fun. If you don't want to play with locals watch out for morning or late at night. Watch going on TILT though. You go on TILT and that down and your roll will be busted in a couple of days.

Agree. Primarily played .25/.50 and did play some .50/1 NL on a bunch of sites and the game is way harder online than live. Forget about it now. Its straight hard. 1/2 NL online I only played a couple thousand hands or so. 1/2 online is in a whole different level compared to 1/2 NL live.

I moved here a year ago last week with 2 suitcases and a cat, following losing everything in FL to a hurricane and an ex-wife. No job, no friends or family, no place to live, and had never been to Vegas before. No problem. I don't regret it a single bit. I love it here. My life has been great. If I were thinking of doing this in your situation, I'd leave smoke trails getting here.

Life is a great adventure to those willing to leave the house. "This ain't no dress rehearsal."

Seriously, if you don't have something to tell the grandkids, you've wasted a great gift. Life. Do it now, while you have time to recover if you've screwed up.

ofc the live games are easier... but you're paying twice as much in rake/tokes, and getting 20-25 hands per hour instead of 400+.

As a side question, What is the cost of living in LV. For instance what would a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment, average size cost a month for rent.

It's cheap. A decent 2br/2ba will run about $400-$500 per roommate.

One thing that sucks is car insurance. Vegas has a very high car theft rate which raises insurance.

This is of course subjective, auto insurance has been much cheaper for me here in Vegas than it was in NYC or NJ. But generally you are correct.

STAY AWAY FROM LAS VEGAS------
There are a lot better places for someone like you.
Night life here for the young can get a little expensive.
The strip is the life of the town.
There are far better schools for you to complete your education.
Vegas will be here when you have the education done.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do and thanks for your service. The GI Bill was one of the best decisions America has ever made.

Re: Would any of you move to LV in my situation.

It cant be more expensive than NJ or DC car insurance rates. I most likely will be paying liability only since the car is paid and cheap.

Easy call - why NOT do it?

If you don't like it, you haven't moved a house full of crap, a wife, kids, etc there and you can just up and move someplace else at any time.

As far as not knowing anyone in LV, lots of people that don't know anyone in LV because they just moved there so you won't be alone in that respect. Most people aren't locals, it's sorta boom-town-ish which can be interesting in itself. Great place to be in the friggin crane business!

OP, did you cap anyone in duty ? If you capped someone in the field, I think Vegas is for you. Because nothing in vegas could phase you.
