the south of france
i will be visiting soon for (hopefully):
food/wine golf hi-stakes poker ?other? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! most on this forum have/will travel there someday so i hope this thread will be interesting to more than just me. |
Re: the south of france
you're not gonna find high stakes poker, except in Paris at the ACF. the Monte Carlo casino does not offer poker at all, iirc.
in fact avoid Monte Carlo totally, it sucks. I'm thinking about a trip there as well, and have a good friend from Paris. she basically says on the coast, Cassis is a 'romantic' place. a couple other more fun/studenty places are Cap d'adge, Port Barcares, and St. Raphael, near St. Tropez. Corsica is a step up, is very nice. |
Re: the south of france
I've spent some time in the region around Avignon. Not sure how much golf or poker you're going to find. IMO, by far the best way to see this part of the world is on a bicycle. All of the farm roads that in the USA would be dirt, are nice and paved in France. Also, the max distance between villages is like 5 miles so you can always find a place to sleep. When I was there the weather and scenery were fantastic. I know if you do some google searching you will find lots of nature places and cool things like thousands year old Roman aquaducts.

From googling, it seems the aviation club will accommodate your poker needs.

Re: the south of france
I found the food in Monte carlo awful. Dont know if represents the rest of france well though, but me and a friend of mine tried alot of different restaurants there, and it was completely tasteless. Even the more expensive stuff.
If french food is like that in general, i hope you like wine. =) |
Re: the south of france
Don't have much to add except that I was recently in Aix and it's beautiful and the food is awesome.

Re: the south of france
If you are travelling through the Loire Les Bordes is supposed to be awesome, one of the best in Europe.

Re: the south of france
I'm not sure you're going those ways but the Basque Country (South-West of France, Atlantic side around Biarritz) is amazing. Amazing outdoors inland and beaches, great culture, amazing food, best waves in Europe if you're into surfing.
Otherwise, Nice + Cannes + Antibes are real nice as well. Good food. Only problem is that the ratio between tourists and locals is probably 1:1. |
