OT: Books That Have Made The Most Positive Impact on Your Game

After reading the Harrington series well over a year ago, I am looking to revamp my game and was curious as to what some of you feel made the biggest impact on your game.

i read a bunch of books a few years back, and didnt get much out of it. I just read Making the final tbl by Lindgren and it was pretty good but since reading alot of stuff on 2p2... 2p2 is way more useful/productive than reading books by the pros

Honestly, the nlh section of super/system was the first book I read that really opened my eyes as to how poker should be played.

Winning Low Limit Hold'em, Lee Jones. The book that started me out has had the greatest impact, the rest have been incremental.

Re: OT: Books That Have Made The Most Positive Impact on Your Game

HOH1- Basic NLHE
HOH2- More tournament specific play with short stacks
HOH2- Improved my post flop play
TOP- Helped me understand poker and why it can be beaten
SSHE- Helped me understand odds (it's a limit book)
NLHE:TAP- Helped my deepstack NLHE game and understanding implied odds better

2+2 Forum: Helped me apply all this to real world situations, learn about stealing/restealing, dealing with variance, and mixing up my game.

in order of most useful first:

1. HoH1
2. HoH2
3. NLHET&P
4. Theory of Poker
5. Getting Started in Holdem - Miller (very underrated compared to other small stakes holdem books, the section on shortstack should be known by heart by decent ring players)
6. Phil Gordon's Little Green Book (but only some parts)
7. Kill Phil - it finally helped realise pushbotting in certain spots is +EV sink in.
8. H0H3
9. Little Blue Book

This was my first book I read(not counting Hellmuth's) and it helped greatly since I started off playing no foldem games and it made me realize that poker was a game that I could make money off of.

I remember paying my friend to go to class and take notes for me because the 2/4(limit) game on Party was too juicy for me to leave

Re: OT: Books That Have Made The Most Positive Impact on Your Game

In approximate order

-- Doyle's chapter on NLHE in SS is the best and most influential.

-- NLHTP is also excellent and rivals SS as a guide to NLHE cash games.

-- "Making the Final Table" by Lindgren tells you how to play players and situations in major tournaments. Learned a lot about how to play small ball.

-- "Sklansky on Poker" is the bible is you want to play razz.

-- HOH 1 & 2. The text parts are very good. A classic work. The problems are uneven. Part of the weakness may be Harrington's style: he seems good at the math and strategy, but he plays tight because he is not as good at postflop play.

-- Other articles in SS2. Todd Brunson's chapter on Stud/8 and Jennifer Harmen's on limit holdem are excellent.

-- "Tournament Poker" by Sklansky. Only about 1/4 of it is on NLHE. Also, it constantly emphasizes playing to survive. Still some key concepts.

-- SSHE is excellent. I got some important ideas out of it, but I don't play loose limit holdem games much.

-- "Play Poker Like the Pros" is a good beginners book. The material on NLHE and tournaments is excellent so far as it goes. I think the book got a bad rap because the limit holdem section advises a hyperaggressive style, which is correct for tight games, but ridiculous for loose low limit games.

-- The book on playing O/8 and Stud/8 for Advanced Players. You really need it if you are going to play those games.

I can't believe no one mentioned "Ace on the River". It tells you the core of poker, other books takes 100s of pages to explain what comes from the core. Better to understand it yourself.

/Hijack/ Anyone else think that TPFAP (assume that is what you are talking about) is the most mis-understood text on tournament poker...ever?
