Is 300 do-able by New Year\'s Eve?

After getting over some Martial Arts injuries, I'm finally able to hit the weights hard again. My 2 rep max this week is 215-220 (ugh), any chance I can be at 300 by New Year's Eve?

That sets your one rep max at 225-230 range. Depending on how hard you work and where you were before your injuries it may be possible. Its gonna take alot of hard work though. Best of luck.

Yea, sorry. Free weight flat bench. 2 rep max before injuries was 250.

i'd imagine its in the realm of possiblity to put on ~70lb on your bench max in 8 months...you're probably going to want to spend more time at the bodybuilding.com forums or wannabebig.com forums, however

no, it's not.

not w/o you know what.

if 250x2 was your previous best, you've gotta get there first, then do 250x5 in order to do 300.

I have to agree with Tx as well.

Even with a totally dialed in workout it would be hard to do by NYE. Not sure what your injury was but that may hinder progress along the way.

If your going to put your own program together you can take steps that will allow you to maximize your chances of success. This is a book I highly reccomend. Here is some background on the author and his training program.

Other info can be found here.

It's certainly possible for some people at your current level to train hard enough to bench 300 by 1/1/08. We'd have to know a lot more about you (age, weight, training history, etc.) to say if you're in that group. If you're looking only for encouragement, I'd suggest you go for it as hard as you can. Barring injury, even if you miss, you'll certainly improve a lot from where you are today.

How's your form? If you bounce weights off your chest, keep your elbows out wide, plop your feet down wherever in front of you, and end the lift with the bar over your face, then you may have opportunities to improve your poundages simply by improving your form. Dave Tate had a great bench form article on t-nation.com. I looked quicky and couldn't find it, but it's there. I recommend you find it and follow it. You won't be sorry.

Also, try focusing on training your triceps as well as pausing on the bottom for every rep on the bench. Finally, make sure you rotate your heavy bench-like exercise. Do inclines for a while until you're no longer improving from the week before. Then try something like a band press, board presses, or pin presses. Keep rotating so your body has to get stronger to adapt.

Good luck.

OP: I'm not sure a better site for increasing your maximal strength exists than elite fitness. Some of the smartest, strongest, minds in the world write articles for it.
