Gavin Smith... Puss......

So Gavin Smith bought his way out of the Jester Costume. I realize that buying your way out is normal and accepted, but I still think he's a puss for not going at least to the first break after Madsen held up his end. He pussed out on carrying Sebok in, he pussed out on wearing the costume after Sebok and Madsen held up their ends. So my question is:

Gavin is obvi a huge dick for doing this. Why make a prop bet when you know you aren't going to hold up your end when you lose. Pretty stupid.

it kind of makes sense that gavin isn't gonna wear the jester costume. i mean, espn filmed his 2nd place finish, and joe/jeff didn't make any final tables. i guess gavin got no credit for it because the other two didn't play that event so he technically loses the bet.. i could see how he might not want to parade around on tv in the loser's outfit.. kinda annoying for espn to explain too, "yeah we know you saw this guy win a lot but that didn't count.. don't worry it's complicated"

the bet only covered hold em events i believe. so even though gavin had the best series (because of the final table/2nd place) - he lost the bet w/ j sebok.

alex is just saying that since gavin's final table will be shown - it would be odd to be shown as the loser in the bet.

he still lost though...

Yeah, that kind of makes sense, but I just assumed the whole purpose was for publicity anyway, and figured he'd probably pay extra to get to look like a jackass instead of paying to get out of it.

Re: Gavin Smith... Puss......

The bet was there were a predetermined number of events all three would play. They could also select 2 other events that were their choice, Sebok took 2 limit events Madsen took 2 NL events and Smith took 2 events.

These "Wild card or Joker" events had to be picked BEFORE the first event of the WSOP. The event that Gavin finished second wasn't one of the 2 events he picked for his wild cards. Too bad, so sad wear the damn suit fat boy.... or don't make a bet you are promoting for a month. Its a publicity stunt for the site you pimp make more of an effort.

Sebok needs to work on negotiating skills though, something like 20k gets you out of wearing it for a week but you have to wear it to the dinner break....

I hope Norman Chad rips him for this.....

I'm with bogey here surely these bets are just to raise their media profile and get some air time - so I'd expect them to wear it , still got us talking about them so it worked.

I talked to Jeff Madsen briefly on AIM and he's pretty damn pissed.

sebok held up his end last year which was far more embarrassing and he's generally a whiny bitch...my respect for gavin has plummeted

Re: Gavin Smith... Puss......

As much as I like GS, this is incredibly lame. He wimped out of the 'tattoo other guys name on butt'-bet too and got the tattoo higher up where it wouldn't hurt so much and be less embarrasing.

It's not even like this one would be that big of a deal - compared to the bearsuit Joe had to wear last year I'm sure a jester-costume could be made pretty comfortable and not hinder his play.

Curious b/c Gavin is a bright guy and must understand the publicity value of the jester stunt.

If he "bought his way out", then someone took the money and should "share the blame".

Absolutely right !!! I think The Bear (or his new nickname The Rabbi) should take sebs behind the barn and paddle his dumb ass for selling the bet so badly. Let Gavin buy out day 2-end at 10K per day but he MUST wear the suit day 1, then you can offer the same buy out to Madsen at the same price and no harm is done. Sebs screwed Madsen and himself by doing this buyout.

Seriously Sebok is ok but The Rabbi needs to fix his negotiation skills because they are seriously weak.

didnt someone post gavin has cash flow problems and requires stakes to enter tournies? if this is true how can that sloppy fatass even afford to "buy" out

Re: Gavin Smith... Puss......

Is it common to buy out of a bet once it has reached its conclusion? I thought this really only happened when there was still a small chance for a different outcome.

Anyone else tired of the whole Seebok/Smith/Madsen prop bet thing? It's in Cardplayer, Bluff, Pokernews updates and video. Ugh. Too attention-whorish for me. Just play poker.

Re: Gavin Smith... Puss......

I listen to their show (and I am a fan), but could not agree more with you. The bet is silly, at best. Gavin said early on that he would not participate in the bet again since it had already been done. However, he gave into the pressure and made the bet. Funny thing is that I remember an e-mail on the Pokerwire show that asked the question (paraphrase) "what was the wildest prop bet that they were aware of thus far during the WSOP?" Joe Seebok actually said that his bet with Gavin and Madsen was the wildest. Are you serious? Goofs dressing up in a costume for the second year in a row? The first time it was a novel idea. The second time, it was just plain silly.

whats funny is that if he had continued the bet and wore a jester costume for the ME, this topic would be replaced by a thread about how much of a media whore gavin smith is.

aj, it would be easy for ESPN to just say, well Gavin and Jeff lost a prop bet to Joe, and this is the outcome. They would not even have to give the details, and if they did, no one watching would really care.

If I was Jeff, I would be pissed.. but then again maybe not, publicity is publicity I guess and anyone that Jeff gives a rats ass about already knows the details and def would not think any "less" of him.

Gavin on the other hand...............

What I was getting at was this tendancy to critcize players for everything and anything recently. (negreanu, sebok etc)Its hypocritical and doesnt serve any purpose other than to antagonize the players involved, which is probably the aim anyway for the people who start these threads.

anyway i appreciate your disappointment but imo gavin smith, sebok, madsen ectc are private individuals who really dont owe the public anything in the way of fulfilling crazy prop bets if they dont want to.
