The \"Halloween is ridiculous thread\"

I have always thought Halloween was an over-celebrated holiday, not to say that we don't go overboard on every other holiday. I was talking to some friends the other night and we were talking about we dressed up as kids for trick-or-treating and everyone of us came to the conclusion that we hated dressing up and it was basically something our parents made us do. Also, kids get candy every day I didn't want to walk blocks and blocks for a kit-kat, f that I wanted to get off the couch, go into my pantry where I could find some good candy.

Halloween is catered for kids but is a much better adult holiday imo. Raunchy costumes and amusement is the only thing good about the day/night. The candy, pumpkins, store-packaged crappy costumes and the ghost stories are all super boring--they lose their luster quickly.

Haunted houses never worked for me either. I was either too young meaning that I was scared out of my mind and hated it or I was too adult for even the best ones and numb to the fiction of the house and found the whole idea stupid. Even the greatest haunted houses don't do anything for me and I have been to some houses that have been raved about-drove to f'ing far for them too.

Pumpkins are a way to steal everyones money. There is this pumpkin patch near my house and you should see these blood thirsty business people! On the outside they make it look like a place where kids can ride on a mini-train throughout the field, and the parents are videoing the great time and kids are picking out "their favorite pumpkin." wtf?! It's a pumpkin, THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME! So these doofus families are paying all this money for these non-special pumpkins and cheesy day in a field. [censored] stupid. I mean congrats to the owners of the pumpkin patch they are doing well but it is just proof that Halloween is ridiculous and people will do anything for a "holiday." People get this holiday fever and they really get it when they have kids.

I am just glad we took some stories overboard in the early 1900's and ran w/ it so that we could create this monster /rant

The one redeeming thing about Halloween is the Simpsons Halloween specials. Otherwise, it's pretty idiotic, yessiree.

darko,

I view Halloween as an excuse for woman to dress up in slutty outfits and therefore wholeheartedly endorse this concept.

I'm not much of a holiday guy, but when compared to the following holidays, christmas, thanksgiving, easter, valentine's day.

well, only thanksgiving is more awesome because of all the food, the rest suck worse then halloween, and halloween is typically kind of fun for me, I like it a lot more then most days.

LOL @ tdarko. [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

I dunno, I kinda like it. As for the kids, I grew up in a safe neighborhood where trick-or-treating was huge. I think it's awesome to see all the kids dressed up. My condo complex is full of old effers and has a no solicitor policy, so I often go over to a friend's house and hang out while the kids come by. We used to stay out later though - I remember knocking on doors as late as the 9PM hour; these days it seems they're done not long after 8PM. Two other things:

- someone told me this week that next to X-mas it's the most spent upon holiday all year. I guess all those costumes and candy and pumpkins add up if that's true. I know a house party last week that had about 200 people all in elaborate costumes, many of which were rented for $50-100+.

- this week must by high season for knocking off convenience stores if you were into that sort of thing. Come in wearing a mask, the clerk wouldn't even think twice about it. Say, come in dressed as Zorro or some gun-toting superhero or villain. Your face would never be on camera. I'm just sayin'. If I'm working at Circle K this week I may be packing heat.

Now this I can lean toward a little. Holidays in general suck, I am anti-holiday in general and you pretty much took the words out of my mouth--Thanksgiving is my fav b/c of the food. V-Day is the worst, Easter sucks. Christmas you get good food again but have to deal w/ a ton of bs so that sucks. Halloween, no food and kids [censored] everywhere! Meh.

My theory:
Your parents couldn't afford a pumpkin b/c they spent too much money year-round on candy for your pantry. Their bad, not yours. Also, you may have been deprived of attention as a child if your parents never carved a pumpkin w/ you. Maybe they had to work two jobs to pay for your goddamn candy-addiction. Probably both your faults: a wash.

Also, another reason to like Halloween as a young adult/adult: Halloween Parties!!!

-Awesome costumes for couples that are clever
-Outrageous costumes that are in such poor taste, that you can't help but laugh (see: girl going as Terri Schiavo 2 years ago)
-SLUTTY GIRLS IN HOT COSTUMES SUCH AS: COP, REFEREE, CHEERLEADER, ETC etc etc

There is some truth to this. I live adjacent to a really nice neighborhood which itself is adjacent to a pretty run-down, primarily Hispanic neighborhood. I have a lot of friends in the nice part and they say that every year theirs gets totally overrun by the poor folks because apparently they give out better/more candy. So their parents literally drive them up to this area and follow them around in their car while they score some sweets. It's basically a chance for them to load up on stuff they can't otherwise afford. Pretty sad.

The other part of your post about the pillowcase full of candy was awesome too. We are probably about the same age. As for me, I liked most traditional candy bars but can't stand sour candies so basically gave those away. Remember Bottle Caps? I can still taste the root beer one. Yummy. It was the type of candy I would see at Halloween and never see/purchase the rest of the year.

I'm kind of with td on this one. I hated dressing up, and I wasn't a fan of trick-or-treating. I did like bags of candy though, as my mom never bought candy regularly. That was the only bonus.

Halloween is best as a teen boy imo. You get to blow stuff up without consequence, and you get slutty girls.

Ahh those were the glorious times of halloween. As an adult, I still get slutty girls, but I can't really go out and blow mailboxes up.

Also, the first year I moved into my condo I went to Costco and bought boxes of Snickers and Pay Day. FULL-SIZE candy bars, not this "fun size" crap. (What's "fun" about it anyway?) I was gonna be the pimp of the whole building, giving out large candy bars. I waited patiently for kids to come knocking and it never happened. Dammit. I was stuck eating both boxes for the next year or so.

Re: The \"Halloween is ridiculous thread\"

Halloween means different things to different age groups.

0-3: means little to nothing to the kids. it's just an excuse for parents to dress their kids in cute costumes and parade them around the neighborhood.

4-7: costumes + candy = fun!
8-12: get as much candy as possible and cause some mishief with your friends.
13-15: depends on the kid. might be the beginning of the next stage but it is sort of an apathetic period for most i suspect.
16+: Guys - seeing girls in slutty costumes.
Girls: dressing in slutty costumes

I'm not sure when the last phase ends. I'm sure it ends at some point for the girls, but i'm sure all guys enjoy the slutty aspect of it at some level at any age. I'm also guessing that once you have kids, it turns into a much bigger pain in the ass and reduces enjoyment. I'm 30, single, no kids, and still enjoying the last phase.

I was under the impression that this year was a really bad year for pumpkins driving prices way higher then they've ever been.

Halloween is awesome. Whoever said that it's the easiest time to pick up chicks is spot on.

It was also pretty much the only time of the year that I'd get candy when I was little, parents didn't believe in candy/soda. It was pretty much a sprint from house to house for the entire time allowed to do it in my town to gather as much as possible.

Re: The \"Halloween is ridiculous thread\"

Damn your parents for making you dress up and get tons of free candy. It really must have sucked throwing it all away because you only like Kit Kats and clearly no one gave out anything you liked.

Jesus people do we really have to complain about everything? How the hell can we overcelebrate Halloween? You dress up and get candy, that is it. There are no 100 days of Halloween on the radio, or pumpkins in Home Depot on May 1st.

I mean you're complaining about kids riding on a train through a field just because it makes some poor doofus a few extra bucks? If a parent wants to take their kids on a friggin train through a friggin field for 20 bucks let them, at least the kid isn't glued to a TV or playing X-box.

Damn we have it too easy nowadays if we're complaining about getting free candy.

Tony Danza,

I voted Poccohantas but it was tough to choose between that and the school girl (I always think of early Britney days).

RikkiDee,

Ummm no. Actually in my circle of friends I am the super laid back lover of life one. Just b/c I see through all the BS doesn't mean I don't enjoy life, this is just one thing that I find really annoying. It isn't like I complain about it all day. I don't like most holidays but I am one of the more liked people in my family as well as my soon to be in-laws family b/c I am a very happy person (I mention this b/c holidays is a time when everyone is around each other). It is ok to see through the nonsense, it doesn't mean you hate life.

DK,

The patch I was talking about sells them for 12 bucks I think. I haven't been in the cult compound, I just drive by it everyday (part of what prompted the post), I am going on what others have said they paid for the pumpkins.

Re: The \"Halloween is ridiculous thread\"

tdarko,

OK maybe I am reaching a bit to say that the poor families use this holiday to subsidize their pantries. However, there's no doubt they do it because the richer neighborhood gives out more/better candy. So much so that they go to the trouble of loading up the kids and driving up there even though the houses and driveways are bigger so I anticipate around 30-40% more walking per piece of candy. I'm not sure if the parents fired up Excel and determined whether they're truly seeing sufficient ROI or VORH or whatever by going to all that trouble, but many of them seem to think it is and you don't see the rich kids going to the poor neighborhoods.

Yes, because you should be the one to decide this. Guess what, plenty of kids can eat a 100 lbs of candy on Halloween and still not get fat. It isn't about the candy, it is about you hating on something that is so harmless. That is why people mention the candy, because you're making a giant bitching thread about a holiday that is basically all about people having fun and getting free stuff.

Tuq,

I know what you're talking about, btw. I lived in a subdivision that was perceived as more affluent than the surrounding area. It was also known as by far the best for trick-or-treating, but as the years passed there were more and more vans full of randos unloaded in our streets to see what we would give them. Kinda funny, imo, but also very sad.
