I don\'t understand buying movies on ITunes

Disclaimer: I used to have an Ipod, but it died and I haven't replaced it. The one I had didn't have video capability.

Disclaimer #2: I know this post makes it clear I am an old, non-hip doofus who doesn't know anything. I can accept that.

When you buy a movie from Itunes, do you then watch it on that screen the size of a postage stamp?

Or do you watch it on your computer?

Is there any way to get it to play on your TV?

If not, why are people buying movies to watch on a teeny tiny screen? I don't get it.

you can watch on your computer monitor. with the quality of monitor today many people only have that and no tv.

you can hook up your computer to a tv, it's super easy, many people do this

I'd say watching a movie on my ipod is about equivalent to watching one on an economy-class personal airplane screen

I think they were getting people used to buying video from them. When it started you could watch on a vid iPod or your desktop but the resolution wasn't very high.

Now in addition you can watch them on your iPhone or on your TV via Apple TV. The resolution is still low, but they look great on the iPhone. And the iPhone is much easier to haul around than a laptop.

Yeah, 'cos so many people have Apple TV. Just like the Lisa and Newton. And eBook. [or is that ibook?]

I'm not sure I get your point. The popularity of the Apple TV doesn't have anything to do with iTunes selling video. Apples's goal is probably to have movies on iTunes eventually drive Apple TV sales, like the songs on iTunes drive iPod sales.

I downloaded a couple of movies/tv shows for my Ipod specifically for portable use (mainly on airplanes).

But I agree that for home use it makes much more sense to just watch a DVD. Better picture quality, easy to use, almost as cheap, etc. Why stream low-res movies to your tv screen via AppleTV when you can buy an HD-DVD player for about the same or less?

you can just get a new LCD tv, with a vga input, and hook your computer up to it. In fact, Im doing that today when my 50ft cable gets here. Or modify an xbox as a media center for about a forth of the price of the apple tv.

Re: I don\'t understand buying movies on ITunes

Yea, this gen of Apple TV only makes sense if your TV/Stereo system is far away from your computer and you want to stream your media to it and you're all Apple. Personally, if I'm going to rent a movie I do it through Amazon Unboxed and my Tivo. However, if Apple TV was improved to have DVR functionality which could use storage on my network seamlessly and you could "rent" movies instead of "buying" them I would be tempted. However, I don't have a set top box that does most of that already so again, it would be a hard market for Apple to break into.

I wired up my old Xbox to my lan, and installed Xbox Media Center on it.

Now I can watch, or listen to, anything on my 'puter upstairs, on my home theater setup.

There are glasses you can get the plug into the iPod video that give you a virtual 60" screen.

The stuff I downloaded off itunes was watched on my laptop in bed cause I couldn't download it off 'unconventional' means.

From Apple's Ipod Specs

Input and output
----------------
iPod
Dock connector
3.5-mm stereo headphone minijack
iPod Universal Dock
Dock connector
Audio and composite video output
S-video output

Probably some A/V cables you can buy so you can hook it right up to your TV/VCR/Receiver. It's still at weakass resolution if I remember correctly.

I think the point is that you can watch movies anywhere right on your IPOD.

I don't understand buying them over downloading them for free elsewhere but I don't think that was the question.

You're right; the question is "why would anyone think it's cool to watch a movie on a screen the size of a postage stamp?"

cause if you have a 30 minute train ride twice a day it's something to do?

and watching on that screen isn't so bad after a minute or two if you're into what you're watching

Re: I don\'t understand buying movies on ITunes

Yeah I was trying to say that you can watch it in places a tv or computer aren't available. Plane, car ride,or wherever. Instead of using your Ipod for music or reading or doing whatever else to pass the time you could watch tv shows, movies or anything you want.

If I had a 30 minute train ride twice a day I would absolutely have daily show on my ipod/PSP every day.
