Favorite supporting actor/actress performances?

What are the best supporting actor or actress performances you have seen? I'm thinking of the roles that were so well cast and acted that they practically stole the spotlight from the other actors.

Here are a few of my favorites in no particular order:

John Turturro -- Miller's Crossing
Kathy Bates -- Misery
William H. Macy -- Fargo
Phillip Seymour Hoffman -- Almost Famous
John Goodman -- The Big Lebowski
William Hurt -- From the Hip
Anthony Hopkins -- The Silence of the Lambs
Jack Nicholson -- Batman
Alec Baldwin -- Glengarry Glenross
R. Lee Ermey -- Full Metal Jacket

I could probably go on for a while. I know I am missing some good ones.

Thought we could resurrect this thread. Daddy_Visa started it back in July (wait, was it October? I'm so confused!)...anyway and for some reason no one posted in it . Last night I was sitting around thinking about great supporting roles in film. You know, the ones that really stood out to me.

Here's one that I always liked, Greg Kinnear in As Good As It Gets. I don't know why but his performance really moved me. It's one of my all time favorites.

Oh my god. I really am getting that early Alzheimer's thing. Apparently he just made this thread and I thought I resurrected it. What the heck is wrong with me?

Anyway, I always liked Eric Stoltz in Pulp Fiction. What can I say, I'm an E.S. fan. (Try finding a good picture of him as Lance though. Not easy!)

Gregg Henry in Slither

Sooo funny. Every little facial expression destroyed me, and his rant about Mr. Pibb is one of those moments where I laughed so much it felt like my heart stopped for a second.

Re: Favorite supporting actor/actress performances?

Solo,

If you like horror at all, then yes. It's a strange mix of horror and comedy (which is probably why it wasn't a hit, people went into it with the wrong expectations, and it's so different from Saw- and Hostel-type stuff), and it's full of great acting.

edit: arg, this is hard to describe. Basically, Slither is very smart and good, but it has a very specific and rare sensibility so you'll probably either love it or hate it.

Re: Favorite supporting actor/actress performances?

Kimbell, I'll try it.

I started trying to think of my favorite movies that aren't necessarily "great movies." I then thought of Jeremy Piven. But THEN I thought of a small supporting role that was pretty funny:screen time ratio.

Not a groundbreaking selection, you can never go wrong with Ben Kingsley, but his role as Itzhak Stern is one of my all-time favorites and is often overshadowed by Ralph Fiennes' star-making performance.

I'm a big fan of supporting actors who are somehow teachers or mentors to the main role. To this end, I think my favourites are:

Ramirez in Highlander
http://allstarz.hollywood.com/~seanconnery/high03.jpg

And Mr Miyagi in the Karate Kid
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/image..._morita_ap.jpg

(though I don't believe Miyagi's fighting skills came from Japan, I think he learned from the Fonz, whilst observing the awesome power of Thunder and Lightning).

Hm, interesting. I think I tend to like supporting actors who are problematic to the hero, or who create some kind of tension in the story.

Here's one I like -

Kevin in Meet the Parents

One of the best supporting roles I've seen is that of younger brother Michael in Festen (one of our DVD club films).

Thomas Bo Larsen gives a hell of a performance as a big baby, a jerk of a husband and horrible man in general. And the thing that is the most scary is that he is a totally believable character.

Is this the same woman from Field of Dreams? The name seems familiar. I was always unimpressed by her in that movie and considered it the biggest flaw from an acting standpoint.

Anthony Hopkins in "Remains of the Day" is, to me, the greatest male performance of all time.

Baldwin also gave a great supporting performance in Glengarry Glen Ross.

I don't know the actor's name, and he had a tiny part - but I always liked the scary cowboy in Mulholland Drive. He was cool.

he's pretty much considered an all-out pimp by anybody who knows even the slightest bit about films. You should check him out in Excess Baggage. Pretty 'meh' movie but he was really damn funny in it.

Cool story about Benicio. I was watching an interview with a fellow cast member (I forget who), and he was talking about how He and Benicio took an acting class together before they were famous. The teacher had everybody take a song and recite the lyrics as a monologue. Benicio chose "Light My Fire" by The Doors and apparently had every woman in the class juicing for him by the time he was finished. I can just imagine him, with long pepper black hair and gruff voice saying "Come on, baby...light my fire" as the entire gaggle of girls swoon in unison.

And just because I love this clip, here is Matt Damon telling a funny story about Matthew McConaughey.
