Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

reinstall Firefox and only install the extensions that you need or just uninstall extensions. You can back up all your Firefox data... recently Firefox has become a bit buggy but there working to fix that I believe.

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

what are extensions and how do I go about messing with all that? Is there a site to help me out?

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

If you don't know what extensions are, you probably don't have any installed.

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

I don't know if there is a solution for this. Get more RAM? My FF does the same thing but I have enough RAM so it doesn't bother me.

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

Firefox uses a lot of RAM and has a number of memory leaks. Its just the way it is.

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

it seems that internet explore does the same thing takes up about 65% on average, where as firefore was taking up 90%+
which reall effects how things run on my pc

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

My firefox uses up quite a lot too, but my PC has 2GBs of RAM so it doesn't affect anything.

... I gave bad advice up there... thought there was a software stability problem... this is correct.

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

Firefox does have memory leaks but this doesn't explain why his cpu usage is so high. Demon, I think you may have issues with your PC other than Firefox.

Please submit a HijackThis log if you're interested in diagnosing this problem. In your post include what type of processor you have, amount of RAM, how full your hard drive is, and how long it has been since you defragged.

Good point, I misread the OP. I would occassionally go to one site with messed up javascript that use to spike my cpu usage. OP, can you track the problem to after you open a certain page?

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

Any help is appreciated. I have a Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz processor with 256 MB of RAM (this is very small no?) I have had this computer since Spring 2004. I have 6.47 CB of free space with total size of 74.4 GB. Last time I tried to defrag was two days ago but not sure if it did anything.

Here's my HijackThis log,

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

1) You don't have enough RAM. Your computer is using virtual memory for nearly every application. Virtual memory = very slow and lots of cpu usage. Solution: Buy more RAM.

2) Your hard drive is too full. You can't defrag unless you have at least 15% free space. Solution: Achieve at least 15% free space by deleting media files and try to defrag.

3) You have adware on your system. Begin2search is an adware "searchbar". You need to uninstall it.

4) Your hosts file has been hijacked. You should be able to delete those entries with HijackThis.

5) You have unnecessary programs running at startup. Go to start > run > type "msconfig" > enter > startup tab > uncheck the following items: realsched, qttask, msmsgs, apdproxy, reader_sl, mnyexpr. Then restart your computer.

Edit: Just realized I helped a thread hijacker. I feel a little dirty, but you're welcome.

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

thanks funky. I didn't want to start a new thread.

I did a start-->search for Begin2Search on my local hard drives but shows up nothing and it doesn't show up in my Add/Remove Program thing from the Control Panel. I googled a little and it says its an IE thing? I use almost exclusively Firefox for everything internet.

I'll have to look into getting some more RAM and deleting some media files so I can run a defrag. I've got a pretty big iTunes library that I don't really listen to any more and a ton of TV series downloaded, guess I'll have to delete some of those. Weeds, Rome, LOST, The Office...tough decisions.

Virtual Memory does indeed suck very hard.

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

got to www.komando.com and go to downloads. there is a link to an ap there called Easy Uninstaller or something like that. If finds crap that isn't in the add/remove programs just becarefull you don't delete something you need.

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

What version of Firefox are you using? The Help/About box should tell you this. Version 2.0.0.7 is the latest.

Do you open up a lot of tabs? In current versions of Firefox some of this data is cached and can appear to eat up memory. See this post for details and how to stop that from happening:

http://blogs.chron.com/techblog/arch...xs_memory.html

High CPU usage seems unusual to me. Possibly some Flash app or Java applet is running from a page you visited? Does it happen after you visit certain pages?

Re: firefox uses up a lot of ram

Firefox feels slow for me on all of my computers, running linux and windows. Including my core 2 Duo E7200 machine with 2GB RAM.

Installing the fasterfox extension helps.

Also, if you want speed, opera is the fastest web browser for windows. Firefox has other benefits compared to opera though.
