Free Rice Project
This is a pretty cool project. It's a site that asks you vocabulary questions and donates ten grains of rice for every question you get right to feed people in famine situations. It really is an ingenious idea. They get the revenue to pay for the rice by having sponsor's ads at the bottom of every question. The more traffic they get, the more exposure the sponsors get, the more rice the famished get, and the users get a better command of the English language. It's a win, win, win situation.
As a reference it takes 7250 grains of rice to equal a cup. Free Rice Project |

Re: Free Rice Project
I can look in the mirror and say, "Michael, because of you, some little kid in the Congo has a belly full of rice this evening." Just makes you feel good.

Re: Free Rice Project
Does it stop at some point? I'm at 500 grains.

Re: Free Rice Project
That's a fun little game. I've punched up to level 47 a couple of times, but it's definitely doing a good job of finding words I've never seen. Educated guesses for the win, I suppose. (EDIT: I feel ridiculously smug for making it up to level 49 now.)

Re: Free Rice Project
1) Did anyone else think this was about freeing some guy named Rice from jail?
2) What's to keep somebody from looking all these words up in a dictionary and feeding the whole world? 3) Is it wrong to brag about how many words you know instead of how many grains of rice you've contributed? 4) If those corporations are so generous why don't they just donate enough food to feed the starving people out there? It seems wrong to have the ability to provide for the needy but yet hold back just because somebody half a world away didn't know a vocabulary word. |
Re: Free Rice Project
there are some sites you can go to and just click the button every day and it will donate rice, but i don't know them offhand
|
Re: Free Rice Project
We should put up a competitor site offering cake instead of crappy rice. It'd make millions.

Re: Free Rice Project
you could set an autoclicker to click once every 10 seconds on this one and donate 10k rice every day

1) Did anyone else think this was about freeing some guy named Rice from jail? [/ QUOTE ] I knew what it meant because I have no imagination. [ QUOTE ] 2) What's to keep somebody from looking all these words up in a dictionary and feeding the whole world? [/ QUOTE ] Just a guess; whoever is doing this is probably under no contractual obligation to fulfill their end of the bargain or have a max amount that they will donate. [ QUOTE ] 3) Is it wrong to brag about how many words you know instead of how many grains of rice you've contributed? [/ QUOTE ] Same thing [ QUOTE ] 4) If those corporations are so generous why don't they just donate enough food to feed the starving people out there? It seems wrong to have the ability to provide for the needy but yet hold back just because somebody half a world away didn't know a vocabulary word. [/ QUOTE ] Could not agree more!! Just give them the [censored] rice and be done with it. |

The Hunger Site [/ QUOTE ] More than just for food. There's also a click-able link for schooling, literacy, animals, and the rain forest. |
Re: Free Rice Project
The cool thing about this site is the vocabulary level. It can be anywhere from 0-50 and it scales depending on how well you do. I have trouble getting to 45, but I'm a retard.
