Give me suggestions to write an article.

I'm on some sort of quest to write about 1 article per week about either baseball, football, or basketball. I'd like to know what people want to see me write about. Give me suggestions and I might run with it. I'll be posting articles to some blog or another, that's not terribly important, but I'd like inspiration at least.

I'm currently working on an article examining the competitive balance differences between the NFL and MLB.

Inspired by the Andy Fox thread, who gets the credit for the Dodger's resurgence, Colletti or DePodesta?

Something about how the Cleveland Indians have been so unfortunate/unlucky/unJeterlike this year.

This is probably something better served for a guy like Nate tha' Great who has access to more data than me (ie, pitch by pitch data by speed and stuff).

in general an article about winning close games, especially wtih effect of bullpen/closers. i guess cleveland could be featured prominently.

are you going to try to be getting these articles published with anyone? do you have a sports blog?

Write an article about just how unclutch Derek Jeter has been in clutch moments in the playoffs.

p.s. I am posting this on my phone playing nl at the Wynn with about 5k in front of me how freaking sad am I?

How about Manning vs. Brady? This has never really been explored.

Most underrated QBs of the 90's or at any position. Same for baseball. I'm a big fan of underratedness.

Also something about how much the Run N' Shoot pwnd and needs to be brought back by some future coaching genius.

An overview of baseball defensive stats and their flaws/virtues would be helpful.

UCF: you rule dood.

I like Boris's idea. The only thing I would prefer more is something more Jayscentric of Vikingscentric, as they are my teams. If I come up with an idea for eiter team I will post it.

Write about how the scheduling of any or all three sports (especially the playoffs) have been tailored to accomodate the networks.

Re: Give me suggestions to write an article.

Apparently people suspect Barry Bonds of using performance enhancing drugs. It would be nice to see an article about that.

In the event that someone else covers that one, maybe something on factors that determine how long it takes a WR to get acclimated to the NFL (ie. the tagline is "3 years" to develop, but what factors allowed Anquan Boldin and Randy Moss to do it right away?) I know some work has been done on this but I have not yet run into anything very comprehensive.

*edit: Another one that I want to look into at some point is the long-term success of NFL RBs in relation to the number of carries they had in college. Are the extra carries helpful in learning the game or do they just beat up their bodies at a young age (ie. Laurence Maroney with about 500 collegiate carries and DeAngelo Williams with about 1000 collegiate carries).

cleveland is not going to prove anything. they were horrible in close games last year with the best bullpen in the league, and are horrible this year with probably the worst bullpen.

A ranking of baseball owners from best to worst ... just so I can find out where you'd put Peter Angelos (who I can't stand).

Then do this for football (Can't stand Dan Snyder, either. Us D.C./Bahlmer area sports fans have it rough).

Their third-order wins [censored] sickens me.

EDIT: -12.3 third-order wins while every other meaningful team in the AL Central (i.e. not the Royals) are all above 2.5. So sick.

Very true. At first glance, it would seem that the quality of the bullpen makes the difference - as anecdotal evidence, the A's have a high third-order wins quotient and the Indians are the worst in the league, and many times we have seen the Blue Jays (with their terrible bullpen) constantly feature "unlucky" numbers in the third-order wins column. However, even with a good bullpen (and high DefEff) the Indians were "unlucky," so it would seem that there is either something else responsible for it or that variance/luck plays the defining role in the teams at hand.

How many wins a Falcons team would win with everything the same if Mike Vick was the QB vs. if Matt Schaub was.

Maybe take a look at the career of a GM and anylize all of his trades, signings, and draft picks, as well as how players developed within the system during his tenure. Sabean could be a good one. Pat Gillick another. Definitely needs to be somebody from the 90's so we can see how the youngsters he drafted, traded for, or gave up panned out.

How about an article on whether it's best for college football programs to hire head coaches who are from the NFL (former head coaches or assistants) vs. from other colleges.

An article discussing the value of batting coaches, hitting coaches and managers.

I seem to recall, sometime in the 70s, one manager claiming that most strategic decisions were so obvious - or so neutral - that a good manager could probably only be credited with affecting 5 games a season. (Of course, he was not considering clubhouse issues, which certainly matter too.)

[/ QUOTE ]well if you want some criticism, it seems rushed, the points aren't all that well supported. Note: I am not saying your results are wrong or incorrect, just that I don't think you did a good job of supporting your findings. How many words was your piece? I think if you're going to say this "Conclusion: 50% Colletti, 30% DePodesta, 20% Dan Evans." you should measure the VORP or (I know you don't like this, but maybe something similar) WORP of each of the GM's guys

edit: I'm not sure you took the middle road, as you took the 30,000 Foot Level road. you could and usually do get a lot more specific.

just that I don't think you did a good job of supporting your findings.

[/ QUOTE ]

What?

Let's see the points I made:

14 of the Players on the 25-man roster were brought in by Colletti.

5 players in the current lineup, including the two most valuable, were brought in by Colletti.

Colletti brought in their best reliever, but a bunch of his other moves haven't panned out.

2 starting position players were brought in by DePodesta, as well as the top 2 pitchers.

1 starting position player, starting pitcher, and reliever was drafted by Dan Evans. A couple bench players were also drafted, Evans signed their righty-platoon 1B, and a bunch of rookies have filled in well while players were out with injury.

I also provided the statistics of every player who either picked up 50 AB or 20 IP this year.

What else am I supposed to examine here?
