Calling out all full-time mid-level players...study group

Hi guys,

I am calling out all the full-time players that play in the 12's,24's,and 36's on FTP (or the
equivlanet levels on Stars). I am looking to set up a network of full-time players who meet together
daily on AIM or MSN to discuss poker and help one another out. As a full-time player, I feel that
while we all value the freedom of our working hours, we need a little bit of strucutre in our daily
work. This is where my idea comes in.

Think of this as sort of a daily "board meeting" amongst all the regulars. We all meet together
before we start our session as sort of a warm-up to get everybody in the right mindset before they
get down to "work".

Ideas for our daily meeting (duration 1 to 2 hours ):

1. Everyone brings trouble spots from their previous session and we have a moderator that directs

the discussion of each hand getting everyone to contribute their opinons to each hand.

2. Everyone submits one HH from the previous day and we each review one another's HH's.

3. Discuss any current trends/new developments we are seeing.

4. Discuss new ideas and ways to play certain hands. Help each other fix one another's soft spots.

5. A place to vent our frustrations and keep one another motivated to play.

6. Sharing of databases and resources.

7. Sharing of results to see how one another is doing.

8. putting together funds to hire a coach for the group/sign up for services.

-----

Please everyone let me know what you guys think of this idea. I have one person (Fishing2do) already

involved in this idea. Now most important thing is: I need everyone to have the discipline to stick

to this. If everyone can stick to this...this group can turn into a beautiful thing.

For those who are interested, I need certain information:

1. When do you start your session?
2. When is the best time for you to meet up? What hours would you prefer?
3. How long have you been playing? Your experience level?
4. What stakes do you play?
5. What site do you play on?
6. What qualities/skills do you think you can bring to this group?
7. Where are you geographically located? What is your timezone?

- cheers!

I'd be interested. I'm not a 'full-time' player, but i'm very much trying to intensively learn the game.

1. No set time for playing
2. Don't really know to be honest. At night EST sometime is my best guess.
3. Been playing SnG's for just a month. Poker for 1.5 years.
4. 12's
5. FTP
6. Good analytical thinking, hopefully good deep stack play (i play looser than most deep).
7. EST

4. 24's
5. FTP
6. Hand reading and putting opponent on ranges preflop based on HUD stats.
7. EST

Please also add in areas in your game that are weak:

Re: Calling out all full-time mid-level players...study group

Keep 'em coming guys...we need more people for this group.

Anyways, this is how I think a daily meeting would go:

We choose a weekly moderator/host (or we can set a permanent moderator, up to everyone else). The job is of the host is to set an agenda of topics for the day and guide the discussion.

For instance, an agenda for a day could look like:

1. Trouble hands from last night.
2. Discussion of different ways to play AK in early levels.
3. Reviewing of one another's HHs.
4. Discussion of a SNG article.
5. Update on how everyone is doing.

----

Some other ideas:

1. we can all contribute money to a pot and have an internal competition amongst us to keep us motivated to play. Have a leaderboard for the week, and whoever gets 1st wins the pot. Nothing serious, just for fun.

2. Once every week, we can have people vote for a certain topic to discussed in detail, and either 1) put funds to together to hire someone for a lecture session, or 2) get someone from within the group to give out the lecture.

----

Just some ideas...guys feel free to add more ideas if you want.

Re: Calling out all full-time mid-level players...study group

Sounds like a terrific idea. I would definitely be interested. im a near-full time player, been playing 22s and 33s, just switched over to FTP and have been running badly since.

1.Varies, in general i play 5 hours sometime between 3pm and midnight EST

4. 22s to 33s usually.

5. just switched to FTP

Re: Calling out all full-time mid-level players...study group

Looks like we have 8 interested people right now. I am going to give this thread 1 more day. Afterwards all of you will recieve a PM from me.

Note: No offense guys, but only join if you are 100% serious and will be dedicated to making this group work. I have no problem if you only want to join in periodically. But if you want to join full-time (I know we all have busy schedules) I expect you all of you to meet up during our set times the majority of times.

Sorry if I sound like a drill sergeant, but to really make this group work we all need to be dedicated to this and come prepared with ideas to discuss.

Malifous,

care to elaborate on the IRC channel? I have no clue what it is or what it does. Why is it better than MSN/AIM?

What do you guys think of making a website where you can post hands to view for everyone, posts results, etc etc?

Does anybody know what kind of costs would be involved?

Re: Calling out all full-time mid-level players...study group

My contribution to this thing getting off the ground is that daily is never going to work. It just won't: people have lives, people are at different time zones, etc etc. I think this idea works best as a once weekly or twice weekly thing. People will perhaps be more regular if it is not every single day, and perhaps the eurodonks wouldn't mind altering their schedule once a week, whereas they couldn't meet every single day.

I expect that if we try to do this daily, it will disintergrate quickly. I motion for either once weekly or twice weekly meetings.

Re: Calling out all full-time mid-level players...study group

I think irc channel would solve that, there should be people all the time and you could organize a big meeting once/twice a week.

Re: Calling out all full-time mid-level players...study group

unfortunately i agree with Ocean on the 1 or 2 times a week. Id love for it to occur daily, but im sure myself and most others just couldnt make it. afterall, part of being a "pro" poker player is the lack of a rigid schedule (for most anyway)

whatever is decided ill try to accomodate, but at least at first less frequently may be the way to go.

looking forward to it!

sounds good. How about we meet twice a week. Once midweek and once during the weekend. Or if everyone prefers we can just do it once every Monday.

Anything beside that...group members can of course meet as much as they want.

As some of you know our community already has an IRC channel:
STT IRC Channel

I haven't checked if people are still active/online in it but I think so.

I have to agree with DannyOcean as well, that this might work on a daily basis for all the "real" Full-Time players and probably just for a small group.

What about creating a poll once or twice a week where you can vote for a topic which will then be discussed in the channel with everybody who is interested? It wouldn't matter if some people do not show up. When you have a set time to meet in the channel and a topic which will be discussed everybody can look for sample hands during the week and might be thinking about questions they want to ask/discuss. Obviously you have the chance to do the likely within this forum as well, but maybe it helps some (me for sure) if you are able to get a more direct help and might even get the attention of the players to one of your posts which just hasn't gotten any answers.
A moderator is a must imo. It would be especially cool if the "best" parts of the discussion and some kind of summary would be posted on 2+2 as well.

I am really excited for this to work out.

Re: Calling out all full-time mid-level players...study group

1. i think we (ive obv. already chosen myself for the group ) def. need a channel that everyone can talk on at once... is there a group chat feature on MSN? if so, that would probably work. I also believe it needs to be a selected private group of 10 or 12 people b.c. i feel like it will make a stronger bond and keep people showing up rather then just different random people showing up everyweek. I think we should meet twice a week, one should be a primary day that everyone can show up and the other an opition for everyone. That way we are all meeting up as a group at least once a week.

I'm not a full time or mid-level player, but I would love to be part of this group if you guys would let me in. I play the 3.4, 6.5, and 11.7 (DS) for single tables, and 1.75, 3, and sometimes $5.5 for the 45 person sngs. Ive been looking to take it to the next level.

You mind if I hang around?

Are those mid-stakes SnG?

I am not trying to be offensive, just asking out of curiousity, because if we would name stakes low/mid/high according to equivalent bankroll requirements with cash games, thank I think it would be like:

micro: <=$11 (NL50 and below)
small: $22-$54 (NL100-NL200)
mid: $108-$215 (NL400-NL1000)
high: >=$320 (above NL1000)

The NL numbers in brackets were taken from SSNL FAQ.

I might be up for this once a week or so. Id certainly be interested in seeing how it goes. Im not entirely sure what well be getting out of this that we cant get out of the forum here, but Ill give it a try.

1. Noon pacific? roughly?
2. Afternoon pacific time.
3. Ive been playing poker for 5 years, SNGs for a couple weeks. Ive put a good number of hours into every game currently offered on stars, I guess my experience level would be high at poker, low at SNGs.
4. Mostly $16s, some $27s
5. Stars
6. Not sure. I think Im good at HU play maybe? Ive been doing really well, but Im not sure what parts of my game are particularly strong compared to others.
7. Pacific time zone

Things Id like to see discussed.
1) Low blind play
2) Metagame + exploiting/ adapting to regulars
3) Software
4) Varying bet sizes
5) exploitive vs optimal play
