Borgata PR sports betting charges being brought

Hot off the Press of Atlantic City website:

Developing: Investigators probe illegal gambling ring in casino poker room
Published: Wednesday, November 14, 2007
Updated 11:37 a.m. Oct. 14 (Nov.?)

More than a dozen employees of Borgata Casino and Spa's poker room and organized crime associates were arrested and charged with operating a sports gambling ring on the Borgata's poker room floor. Attorney General Anne Milgram will announce the charges at a 2 p.m. press conference.

That's all there is to the "article" at this point. Anybody know anything about this?

Damn, had I known which employee was the bookie, I wouldn't have had any need for my off-shore Sportsbook account.

Are sportbooks illegal in AC? Or were these guys just(allegedly) working a "side job?"

Sport betting is illegal in NJ.

They were doing some "side action" and using their position in a casino to benefit. Would not suprise me if there was connection to the NJ mob.

EDIT: I was correct, see article below from Delaware News Journal.

Gambling ring busted in Atlantic City
Associated Press

Posted Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at 12:17 pm
TRENTON — An illegal sports gambling ring being run out of a high-stakes poker room in an Atlantic City casino was busted up today.

Eighteen people were arrested in connection to the gambling ring, a law enforcement official said today. Among them were six Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa employees and four known mob associates from Philadelphia, according to the official, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak about the case.

The official said another five people were being sought.

New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram scheduled a 2 p.m. news conference.
A call to Borgata spokesman Michael Facenda was not immediately returned today.

The arrests appear to be among the most serious mob incursions into the Atlantic City casino industry since the first casino opened in 1978.

Fear of organized crime prompted New Jersey to institute tight controls when legal gambling began, but those regulations have been loosened over the years.

Same article in the Courier Post...will have to check back after 2. I'm sure I know a majority of the employees that were arrested just by the odds of it.

Off-shore books would have less intimidating collection methods, I would think.

A bit more there - they name the poker room manager as arrested.

Quite frankly this doesn't surprise me, I can't remember the last table I was at where people were not actively betting sports.

Please cite the exact sentence that says the poker room manager was arrested--or please post a retraction.

If you going by this sentence:

The casino employees charged included poker room supervisors, dealers and a bartender.

...then please note your poor reading comprehension skills in your retraction.

WNBC has the full list of suspects here, and indeed, the room manager is not on it. Three poker supervisors, two dealers and a bartender are.

Yeah he is one of the high limit regulars and so is the half of the list of people who got charged....If all those guys will get banned from Borgata, 40-80 will be the highest game in the room for a very long while...

You're probably thinking of the right person. He looks Italian, short hair, medium/slender build, medium height. Been playing more no-limit recently than anything else (at least when I've been around).

His buddy Ian is also listed as charged. As someone above mentioned, if some of these regulars are banned, some of the games will definitely affected.

I played poker at Borgata with Vincent Procopio 2yrs ago at Borgata and it was obvious he took sports bets. I saw him loaning money out many times and he never even tried to hide the fact that he was a bookie. He asked me if I thought he was a bad guy cause he takes small sports bets, I said no. Theres a lot of shady ppl in the Borgata poker room, just play poker and dont get involved with these ppl.

I **think** that Jeff is a supervisor at the Trop poker room. I could be wrong since I haven't been to the Trop in some time, but I remember a floorman named Jeff. The MSNBC article linked above lists Jeff as 45 years old; the guy that I remember from the Trop was in his mid-forites.

Also, I must go on record that I think this is quite possibly the dumbest thing that anyone has ever done in a poker room. People, if you are going to commit a felony, don't do it in a place that is covered by video surveillance 24 hours a day and frequently monitored by law enforcement officials. Duh.

Mainstream media articles about this incident conflict on some minor points, which is not surprising given that we don't yet have all of the details about the incident. Articles in both the Philadelphia Daily News and Card Player Magazine list Ebert as a Trop supervisor. I remember him as a fairly tall man with thinning brown hair and glasses.

Oh, I hadn't seen that. Then I'd suspect the two you cite are right. It seems like a plausible error that NBC would get a list of "casino employees" and assume that meant they all worked at the Borg; by contrast, it'd be weird for the PDN to make up that he works at the Trop.
