New York New york Hotel,Las Vegas

Hi All,

New poster so apologies if I'm breaking any rules by asking this.I've read the stickies and followed the search instructions but couldn't find anything relevant to this particular hotel.

My girlfriend and I are visiting Vegas for a second time in early September. We're both Irish.Last time we stayed in Excaliber. The accomodation seemed fine to me and I played a good bit of 2-4 limit, just to get used to first time casino play.Seemed to be full of fishy tourists.Great.

This time we're staying in the nearby NY NY (GF and I thought nightlife was great there last time). My question is whats the poker room quality there? Also,Is there any point in looking for a poker room rate (I plan on playing 6-8 hours a day)?

Any tips for good shows in September would be very much appreciated too.

Thanks for your help in advance all

It's connected by bridge to MGM which has a very nice poker oom (has lots of NL, some 4-8, etc). Plus NYNY is a very nice hotel - you'll enjoy staying there (be sure to check out the steak house!).

I'm also Irish and going to Vegas in spt with the girlfriend. We had the NYNY booked until I learned there was no Poker Room so we just cancelled and booked the MGM instead. You can cancel the NYNY and get a full refund so I'd suggest that.

He can only do this if he booked straight through the hotel, and not through a third party.

Not having a poker room in your hotel is no big deal. Just cross the street to MGM.

In three of the last four Vegas trips I have taken, I didn't even play at my hotel's poker room. I didn't plan it that way it just happened.

Nice irish pub in the NYNY, be sure to get a pint there!

It will be no big deal to keep the reservation at NYNY. The MGM is so huge that it will probably be closer for you to walk from your room at NYNY to the MGM poker room than if you had a room in the grand tower at the MGM. The walk way from NYNY will pretty much dump you right into the poker room.

1.) Go downtown to the Western. Watch all the people there. Best show in town. Trust me on that.

2.) Go to the Flamino/O'sheas area around 3am. Watch all the pimps and gang members chasing the hoo....err escorts on Las Vegas Bl.

New York NY is much nicer than the Excalibur, and the MGM is much nicer than NYNY. However, for the dollar, I'd just listen to the other posters and stay at NYNY and cross the bridge to MGM. Gallagher's Steakhouse has awesome aged steaks at a reasonable price, and make sure to save room for the butter toffee pudding (their signature dessert). They also offer some different kinds of raw oysters, if you like that sort of thing. Sportsbook is small, but is right next to ESPN Sportszone (good place to watch games). You can also find table games with lower minimums than at MGM. They lack a good buffet, but you're in close enough proximity to MGM's or Excalibur's, if you're in a buffet kind of mood.

AlaskaGal makes a good point -- the walk from NYNY to the MGM Poker room is probably the same as it is from a room in the Grand Tower, and from NYNY you can just as easily cross over to Excalibur.

Yeah if you can get any service in this hole. Been there 2x and the service was utterly the worst I've ever seen anywhere. One time they sat my friends and I and we waited 20 minutes and we're like...ok is someone going to take our drink orders? The response, "oh the computer is down, it might take a while". Yeah, thanks for not telling us this when we came in and not returning to even tell us it might be a wait.

About a month ago there was a thread with a link to Ticketmaster where I was able to get KA (Cirque show at MGM) tickets for $57.50.

Right near NYNY and MGM (Look for the Coke and MM stores)there is a sameday 2 for 1 show ticket window. Tix-4-tonight or something like that. They open at 11:00am. 2 trips ago (last spring) we got tix for Moma-Mia at 2 for 1.

Tons of bonus points with the wife.

Stayed at NYNY the last time I was in Vegas. The proximity to the MGM poker room was nice, and I had a decent run playing craps one night- I had gotten home at 3AM to sleep, found a sock tied to the door, and went down and won $500 playing craps while my buddy banged a hooker. Ah, Vegas.

The dueling piano bars is always packed and seemed pretty fun. Casino is pretty small for a 'major' resort, but again, proximity to MGM (and in turn, the monorail) makes this not a problem.

hahah, any time you see a place in the US advertised as an "Irish Pub" you can be sure it's nothing like a pub you would actually find in Ireland.

Not really. You won't be giving up much, if anything, by staying at NYNY.

I stayed at one of the garden suites at the MGM last time I was in Vegas and was very unimpressed. I've never stayed at NYNY but I really like the atmosphere there and can't imagine their rooms are too bad. The poker room is alright at the MGM, depending what you're looking for. They only have low limit games and they are slightly tougher than some of the other low limit rooms. However, the setting at the MGM is nicer than some of the trashier joints like Excalibur or Hooters.

Guys, thanks for all your thoughful replys.Might skip the one about watching gang members chase "escorts" though, dont think that would buy too many browny points with GF....

So if I see any rooms with a sock tied to the door handle I'll know what it means (maybe I'll try banging on the door and shouting FEDERAL MARSHAL,OPEN UP )

Seriously though, thanks to all 2+2ers.See you at the felt.

NY NY rooms were decent. Not a far walk to room from Pit and it's not hard to get to MGM's poker room. There's also the tram to Mandalay or a quick walk to Excalibur. I enjoy Mandalay's room more then MGM just because it's less loud and just as fishy.

The 4-8 limit with 1/2 blinds is super fishy and the NL games are good as well.

At NYNY, make sure to request a room that's not near the roller coaster-- I understand the train's rumbling is audible from a fair portion of the rooms.

If you're going to switch hotels, and your focus is on poker, my suggestion is to stay farther up the strip-- in my opinion, MGM is the only good poker room in the south strip (and it's really loud when the adjacent club is going). If you stay at Harrah's, for example, you'll be a short walk from Bellagio, Caesar's and Venetian.

PR quality is non-existent (NYNY doesn't have one)....but, it is adjacent to MGM, which has a pretty good PR.

The Roller Coaster @ NYNY

Hours: Sun-Thurs 11am-11pm
Fri-Sat 10:30am - 12am

If you are trying to sleep at those times, you likely suck at Las Vegas.

I have stayed at both the NYNY and MGM. Actually, the walk from elevator to MGM poker is short enough. The rooms are similar, but I will not stay at the NYNY again. It gets WAY too much foot traffic because of the impressive interior. And there is nothing better than the 9am roller coaster wizzing by your window. "aaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaAAAAAAAAaaaAAAAAA"

When there, even if out until 6, I'm up by 10.

If I am not up by 10, only the fire alarm is loud enough to keep me from sleeping one off.
