When To Give Up?
What is a good deadline to either make it(it = a decent living) or give up. i've been playing for 3 years now. and although i no longer lose money, i dont realy make much either. is there a general timeline for if you haven't yet, you probably never will? what are your thoughts on this? how long did it take you?
|
Re: When To Give Up?
What stakes are you playing at, what's your bankroll, how much did you put in to begin with?
|
Re: When To Give Up?

Re: When To Give Up?
first year and a half - 1500 or so
last year and a half + 1500 or so used be be a gambler when i started but i've been studying and working hard since day one. now i wont take any -ev casino bet period. ocasionaly i play powerball. it's very hard for me to walk away from something i've spent so much time/blood/sweat/tears for. i was very intelegent in school and math. usualy one of the top scores in my schools for the standerdized testing. what i want to know is how long should i keep trying before i give it up? i've learned so much i'm getting much better at roll management. right now my roll is $100. i've turned $6 to $1100 before, cashed $400 and lost most of it back with horendous br management. |

I'd prolly give up on life tbh

Re: When To Give Up?
Just like me. I released long ago though I was never going to be a professional. I usually deposit 20 bucks a week and get up to 200-300 then lose it doing something stupid ($10 nl tables, which oddly have seen me get up to 1500 at times). I know its stupid but it gives me one hell of a rush and costs less then I spend on smokes a week so I can't complain.

Re: When To Give Up?
what games outside of poker can one make a living at?

99% of the people that play dont work 1/10th as hard as i do or have the drive i do.there are plenty of live games i can beat. but i dont have a proper roll.
|
Re: When To Give Up?
The fact that you have won a lot cashed some out then lost the rest over a longer period of time doesn't mean your any different. If you don't get any sort of a rush when you win a nice pot and are bored you should give it a break for a few months. Play for fun and if you actually win constantly then consider pro, its not the other way around.

lol @ "99% of the people that play dont work 1/10th as hard as i do" - You work that hard, you haven't succeeded, and you don't think you should give up?

Re: When To Give Up?
How about making a 3rd thread on this. Just word it slightly different yet again.

Re: When To Give Up?
Why don't you win?
How can you start winning? What do winning players do that you dont? Are you using software? My guess is that you lack fundamentals. You are either too loose or too tight, too aggressive or too passive. Not value betting enough, calling down too much. Cold calling preflop too much. When you play a hand you need to be thinking of how much money you are going to be making or losing on average. Calling a raise preflop is probably going to be a leak unless you know how to play it postflop. Are you calling to hit a pair and call down against an aggressive opponent? Do you think your opponent has a big pocket pair and your'e trying to hit a huge flop and fold if you hit just 1 pair? Are you calling to make moves against a very predictable opponent? You need to know why you are doing what you are doing. And not [censored] reasoning, only pure logic. etc, etc, |
Re: When To Give Up?
If you're smart and did well in school, why the hell is poker your only chance to escape poverty????
|
Re: When To Give Up?
First of all, you need to realize that there are far more losers than winners. And its possible that you can't beat the game, but I doubt it. You probably have leaks.
1. Buy pokertracker and PAHUD. Choose a site that offers the best combo of bonuses, rakeback, weak opposition and pokertracker compatibility. 2. get a bankroll of about 30 buyins for whatever level you are going to start at, and start at a level you both afford and have a reasonable liklihood of beating. I know you need 20, but the 10 is for pissing away on bad play. 3. Play only one table to begin. If you cannot beat a level single tabling it, you will be a multitabling disaster. After you gain confidence and can beat the game for more than 5ptbb/100, add tables as comfortable. 4. Constantly review your stats and hand histories. Compare you stats to those of other winning players, but realize that you can't copy someone else's game, but you can and must learn from others. 5. Adding tables and moving up limits is a hit or miss proposition based on your comfort levels and abilities. The fact that you play powerball is irrelevant. Good luck. |

does everyone who has ever bought a single powerball ticket have a gambling problem?
I'm too lazy to do the research and will let you answer for me. |
Re: When To Give Up?

does everyone who has ever bought a single powerball ticket have a gambling problem? I'm too lazy to do the research and will let you answer for me. [/ QUOTE ] No, but someone who knows they are -EV and buys them over and over again does. Maybe not a huge problem (yet), but certainly a problem. |
Re: When To Give Up?
I think almost everyone who plays powerball has some awareness that they are -EV even if they aren't familiar with that term.
They buy them and say, "I know I'm never going to win this thing." You seem to be saying that the only regular powerball ticket purchasers who do not have gambling problems are the ones who are too stupid to realize they are a bad bet. You act like OP buys these all the time and can't help himself. He says he plays powerball 'occasionally' when he said that he never gambles on -EV games anymore EXCEPT for that. Spending $2-$3 a week on powerball tickets does not mean he has a gambling problem. I don't normally play -EV games either and I hate the freaking lottery. But occasionally when my GF and I are at a casino we will play roulette or 3-card poker even though I know they are -EV because she likes playing those games. FWIW, she understands they are negative expectation games as well. Are we both gambling addicts? I guess we better seek help because we have lost way more than $2-$3 on those stupid games. |
