the king of kong

anyone check this out? i guess it's not in a lot of theaters right now. it's this documentary about this guy billy mitchell, the guy who did the first perfect game of pac man. he got this incredible donkey kong high score back in the 80's and he's been bragging about it ever since basically. the documentary follows this guy steve from cali who is trying to break his high score. .it's pretty good. you end up rooting for this steve guy more than you've rooted for anyone in your life. it's ends up being like a real good vs. evil thing.

I think the first True Life I'm a Gamer had this "hot sauce mogul" on it. He said in it (this was years ago) that he was planning something huge wrt video gaming achievements; and that if he accomplished it that it would be like zomg the craziest thing evar. Wonder wtf that was, he never revealed.

that "hot sauce mogul" is probably that guy.. billy mitchell. he owns a chain of restaurants in florida and they had a whole bit about his hot sauce in the film.

Re: the king of kong

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I've heard it's a huge distortion, creating the good vs. evil that isn't real, just like a reality TV show. In any case, it sounds good.

Anyway, the sick thing is that .......

why on earth would you post a spoiler you idiot?

Like other movies I want to see I'm waiting for it to make it to Cleveland, which likely means I'm waiting for Netflix.

Re: the king of kong

daryn,

Sounds awesome, thanks for the heads-up.

This is also from my generation...my old man was a Pac Man freak and we would spend hours at bars playing the sit-down version of these games. I was so good at Pac Man at around age ten that once after a Suns game I played at a restaurant with All-Star forward Larry Nance and he had to leave before he even got a turn because I was owning the game so hard.

It does seem to me though that those 80s classics would get ridiculously repetitive and you would lose your mind and that you have to be an obsessed freak to want to subject yourself to such tedium, which I'm guessing these guys are.

There was a fairly lengthy discussion of this flik on Howard Stern a few days ago.

I saw the preview for this from the other movie thread and would love to see it, but as far as I can tell, I don't think there is a theatre in Canada that's showing this movie.

Entertaining watch. I nominate Billy Mitchell for biggest douche in the universe.

Definitely a good movie... I dragged my wife to it and she even teared up at the end. No joke...

Very entertaining...

Re: the king of kong

I got to see this at SXSW in March and was lucky enough to meet the crew for lunch, and go out with them that night (my friend is the Associate Producer). Unfortunately I saw it the day after going out with them because I would have had a lot more to talk to Steve about. I spent most of the night talking to the producer, Ed Cunningham, who was a really cool guy.

Minor brag about when I went to see it. SXSW movies work such that people that bought passes get to go in first and the left over seats are sold to schmucks like me. My chances of getting into the screening looked pretty bad, and I texted my friend who had returned to LA saying I didnt think I was going to get to see his movie. A couple minutes later the producer came out and got me in for free.

cbloom, where'd you hear it was a huge distortion? It seemed like it was pretty true to the actual events. The creators were lucky that this movie sort of fell in their lap near the beginning so they were able to catch so much of it on film.

Either way, I thought it was a fantastic movie. I'm looking forward to going to see this again sometime next week. The film is going to be made into a feature length move. I don't really see how hiring actors, writers and even fictionalizing the story could improve it much.

badger, they had a promo for the film at the draughthouse south last weekend. friday and saturday was a donkey kong contest and highest score from the two days won the arcade game. on sunday the guy featured in the movie was going to be there.

btw, your story sounds pretty cool.

In this kind of movie, I really don't think knowing the ending is going to ruin anything. You already know the ending.

Yeah, I was aware, but unfortunately couldn't make it out there. Also, for whatever reason Carla Gugino was out there with the crew. I didn't recognize her, but my gf pointed her out to me at lunch. GF was sitting across from me and was trying to tell me "that's the chick from Son-In-Law" while trying to be less obvious than standing up and pointing down the table. It was a big lunch group, ~15 people and she was like 6 seats down on the same side of the table as me, so I couldn't really see her. As we're all getting up and leaving my gf whispers "I was trying to tell you that's the chick from Son-In-Law."
I responded with a blank stare.
"You know, she was also the topless chick in Sin City."
Gee, thanks for referencing some obscure Pauly Shore movie as opposed to a nice naked rack in a movie that you know I've seen and love.

Anyways, she disappeared from the bar before I got to have the inevitable small talk conversation where I pretend to be not thinking about having seen her naked.

my understanding, the entire storyline of the film is based around this struggle but you dont see how knowing the outcome beforehand could impact the movie experience? huh. ok.

Re: the king of kong

Didn't CDS use his inside info to post a huge spoiler in another thread (Lost maybe?) and then spent like 50 posts trying to claim it wasn't even a spoiler, much less a massive one? If that was someone else, sorry, but there should be a "two strikes and you're out" rule wrt things like that.

Re: the king of kong

I'm leaving in about 10 minutes to go see it. I hope it's awesome.

Fortunately I have no clue how this ends. I briefly saw some names and other stuff but I was pretty confused, so I'm basically going in tabula rasa. Well not quite, since I know there's a badass pac-man player who had a ridiculous donkey kong score. Some other dude embarks on a quest to pwn it. Does hilarity ensue?

Movie was filmed at a great old time arcade where my family used to summer when I was growing up.

This is the biggest brag I've ever read on this site. (I'm not kidding).

Heard clips of this (the movie, not the Nance/Pacman battle) on Howard Stern. WTF at this never showing in Philadelphia? Guess I wait for the DVD.

Yeah this would definitely change the movie viewing experience in my opinion.
The producer was talking to his buddy sitting next to me (before I had seen the movie) and said something along the lines of "Do you think [insert CDS' spoiler here] would ruin the movie for someone?"
I chimed in "Hmm, thanks for that, I'll let you know if it ruins it for me when I see it tomorrow."
I had just sat down and he thought I was at the first screening right before lunch. He apologized and assured me I would still enjoy the movie, which I did, but I really wished I wouldn't have heard the spoiler.
