Just got a summons for grand jury duty
I was wondering how long these things usually last. Also, should I list my occupation as poker player.
I know the grand jury hears evidence from the prosecutor and generally indicts whomever the prosecutor wants them to. |
Re: Just got a summons for grand jury duty
My dad is on some grand jury and goes 1 week a month, every month.
He loves it because he hates his job working on the railroad. He calls it vacation. |
Re: Just got a summons for grand jury duty
If you want to be dismissed, I'd put down occupation as poker player. Most judges/prosecutors are conservative & won't like your occupation much.

Re: Just got a summons for grand jury duty
I served on a grand jury a few years ago. We met every Wednesday AM for three months.
It's a very eye opening experience. I had no idea the crime we had in our county until I served. The prosecutor presents his case, sometimes there are witnesses that you can question, heresay is permissable. It's very very cool and I highly recommend doing it. Most people got indicted, and they were mainly no-brainers. We did fail to indict a guy on a double homicide though...He probably did it, but the evidence just wasn't there to build a case. |
Re: Just got a summons for grand jury duty
a famous federal judge (who ironically was later convicted of something) once said that a grand jury would indict a ham sandwhich.

Re: Just got a summons for grand jury duty
It really depends of the size of your county.
I was on Grand Jury in Boston and we met 4 days a week for 13 weeks and then were extended for 1 day a week for 4 more weeks. |
Re: Just got a summons for grand jury duty
I think it will be an interesting thing to do. I would rather it isn't more than 2 weeks of work, as I am self employed and they probably don't pay much.
I guess I will put down poker player, since I should probably be truthful on something sent to the court, and it probably doesn't matter as there are no challenges to grand jurers. |

Grand Jury Duty >>>>>>>>>>> Regular Jury Duty.
Only time you really have the opportunity to give DA types [censored]... |
Re: Just got a summons for grand jury duty
I didn't realize that grand juries served for this long. 4 days a week for 13 weeks? You have to do this?

It was interesting to be involved in the legal process (as nerdy as that sounds), I got paid daily + mileage (I was a college student on summer break at the time and I had no job) to do it, I got fed, etc. I got a lot of reading done lol. Plus I had the life-changing experience of hearing some moronic woman say "you shouldn't come to the US if you can't speak US" |
Re: Just got a summons for grand jury duty
Maybe SOME people have more important things to do with a quarter of a year...

[/ QUOTE ] they pick 40 people in your county... and then pick 12.... its like hitting the opposite of the lottery... BRING A BOOK.... specifically Math of poker cause you will have enough time to read and understand the entire thing. If you get picked just ask if the defendant is a black/jew/black-jew,Then you will probably be dismissed. and dont go to your regular courthouse, go to the federal court house. and if its mob do it, cause they can bribe you.... or kill you.... good luck and give us a trip report |
Re: Just got a summons for grand jury duty
Ye just put yourself as a poker player and mention you had some alchohol problems in the past. Should suffice.

Re: Just got a summons for grand jury duty
1 day a week for almost 9 months. A few weeks off here and there. Most days we were out by 12.00 PM but occasionally went the whole day.
Most cases were boring, and slam dunks. Not much to get to probable cause, and most attorneys were overkilling with the evidence. 40 bucks a day plus about 60 cents a mile. If you are over 100 miles away, they will also pay for a hotel room and meals. My pool, they made if very difficult to get disqualified. Best case would be sole supporter of a family business. Judges do not have much sympathy. For those whom were disqualified or not selected to Grand Jury service, you immediately went into the regular Federal Jury pool to be assigned to an upcoming trial. |
