Re: Ask me anything about Japan/Japanese

Soh - would you say you have a good feel for the general sentiments of the Japanese towards other Asian cultures? Because my understanding was that the Japanese were extremely proud and felt superior to other Azns...

Take for example the following: best-selling comics "Hating the Korean Wave" and "Introduction to China"

From the article:

[ QUOTE ]
TOKYO, Nov. 14 - A young Japanese woman in the comic book "Hating the Korean Wave" exclaims, "It's not an exaggeration to say that Japan built the South Korea of today!" In another passage the book states that "there is nothing at all in Korean culture to be proud of."

In another comic book, "Introduction to China," which portrays the Chinese as a depraved people obsessed with cannibalism, a woman of Japanese origin says: "Take the China of today, its principles, thought, literature, art, science, institutions. There's nothing attractive."

The two comic books, portraying Chinese and Koreans as base peoples and advocating confrontation with them, have become runaway best sellers in Japan in the last four months.

I'm not putting this forth as proof-positive that the Japanese are racist, but it's certainly some corroborating evidence, imo...

This thread sucks, but not because of the questions, they are good. But I'm looking for more in an answer than "it's illegal" "no" "no".

What do you mean? Why is it illegal in Japan when so many disturbed things are legal? Please give more insightful answers!! If you can't than I would like to ask someone else to do this thread.

Although I'm sure few still think this way, and a lot thought this way long time ago, but most of the people these days don't think that way.

Are you kidding? Just look at how Japanese people think of Okinawans. And they're part of their own country!

[/ QUOTE ]
Are you saying Japanese people who don't live in Okinawa sort of look down on Okinawans? If that's the case, you're wrong.

In your opinion, how do Japanese people think of Okinawans?

[/ QUOTE ]
That they're uncivilized and stupid and should be a part of China or at least not Japan

[/ QUOTE ]
This is definitely not true. A lot of people even move to Okinawa from other part of Japan. Japanese people usually think of Okinawa as an island with beautiful ocean and a little bit different (not inferior or anything) culture. I was in Okinawa last spring, and I had a great time. Where did you get that idea?

Maybe it's because I'm Japanese, but when I was in Japan, I never felt like people were racist towards other Asians.

Soh,

Can you explain a bit about your background? Like how old are you, where did you and your family grow up, and when and why were you in japan for 3 years?
