Triumph,

That's interesting, I never looked at it that way. That said, I never see NFL players getting into it with refs or umpires hardly at all, even when disputing plays, and can't remember a ref ever throwing the flag on something that was said to them (what would that even be called, unsportsmanlike conduct?).

Marty Schottenheimer got one of these in the Chargers' playoff game against the Jets a few years back. He came on to the field to argue a call.

A few reasons why it doesn't happen more often:

A - the coach can't always talk to the ref - he usually bothers the line judge.

B - he's got to worry about what's going on more than any coach/manager in other sports

but beyond these, I'm not sure why it doesn't happen more often. Perhaps the challenge system helps too.

Another reason I feel it doesn't happen is the fact that a 15 yard penalty is extremely hard to overcome. Yards don't come easy in the NFL and losing 15 over arguing is a dumbass thing to do.

I guess in Bball it would be a technical, I'm not sure how 1 pt/possession hurts a team, but it still is more a penalty than just getting run off.

After reading this thread yesterday, I called up information, asked for the number for Major Legaue Baseball in Manhattan, then was forwarded to Bud's answering machine. I left a message saying that if Winters' language had racial overtones and he wasn't punished, I wouldn't be purchasing any more tickets in the near future.

I take full responsibility for the suspension.

yeah ive about had it with these umps

3 mets get thrown out in the past week for arguing a called 3rd strike a good foot outside

[/ QUOTE ]

You think players should be allowed to argue balls and strikes?

[/ QUOTE ]

i dunno i have to think about that one

thrown out of game is one thing. 3 game suspension for arguing is nuts. th

[/ QUOTE ]

They aren't. It sounds like your mets team is full of morons, they knew they were very likely to get run if they did it, but they still persisted.

[ QUOTE ]

A common understanding between players and umpires is that they are allowed a certain level of argument, but the player is never allowed to question an umpire's judgment of balls and strikes, or argue a balk without risking ejection. This is especially true for catchers who turn around and question the plate umpire regarding a ball/strike call. In some cases, an ejection follows a fine, and sometimes, a suspension if the player, or manager or coach reacts very hostile towards the umpire.

[x] Bradley behaved badly.

Clearly Milton Bradley didn't spend enough time in the weight room doing strength conditioning if that little take down is going to bust his ACL.

Also, I like where they "stop" the players from going after the umps.

MB is a big pussy, if he really wanted to fight, he could have gotten right to the ump. But it's baseball, there are like 2 real fights a year, instead usually just dirt kicks and spitting and this kind of nonsense.

So I assume it's safe to say the allegation that Winters used racist language towards Bradley is a total pile of BS, since nothing else has come out to support this accusation. If the ump did say something racially offensive, why don't Bradley and Meacham just up and tell the world EXACTLY what words he used, instead of this vague, bogus crap about the comments "sounding racist," or "offensive" whatever other unspecific claims they have made.

Bradley's injury falls just short of Gramatica's FG celebration knee blowout in terms of being awesomely stupid.
