"Do you have the king?" Tommy Giampaolo was asked.
"Yeah, I have the king," Tommy G replied.

A king had landed on the turn and Tommy's opponent mucked after asking. Much to the surprise of Tommy G, the floor was called over for a ruling. Tommy G was informed that he's not allowed to actually disclose to anyone at the table what his actual hand is. For doing so, he was given a 9-hand penalty.

"Had you told a lie about the hand, that would have been okay," the floor staff informed him.

[/ QUOTE ]Why does this rule exist? I understand that you can't reveal your hand to just one player, but why when the hand is announced to the entire table? Is this standard or just for the WSOP?

[/ QUOTE ]To prevent collusion. For an extreme example, suppose you are in final 3 of a tourney with a guy you have a piece of, and you want 3rd guy to bust first. You move in, 3rd guy folds, and guy you have a piece of goes into the tank. If you tell him something like "I've got the nuts, you should fold" this is clearly bad. A bit draconian in the above case though.

[/ QUOTE ]

Thanks, makes sense. Still, only covers the most blatant and incompetent collusion. Not sure it's worth removing an interesting psychological component of the game. Also, were this rule strictly enforced, that would end any possibility of talking about one's cards, not just telling the truth. Because there's no deception in a yes/no answer to the question "do you have the king?" if you're only allowed to lie.

[/ QUOTE ]

If the rule was STRICTLY enforced - would he be penalized for answering "yes" to the "do you have a king?" question? Or does he have to verbally declare his hand, as in "yes, I have a king." Just curious...

Most of the time he would say things like "I have it" or "Top top."

Gus Hansen Busts a Player

On a flop of {J-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, a player check-raised all in against Gus Hansen for 36,500. Hansen quickly called.

Hansen: {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}
Opponent: {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

The turn was the {10-Clubs}. The river was the {J-Clubs}. Hansen's Kings held up and his opponent headed to the rail.

Thayer started the day at Gus's table with 64.5K.

Obv, hope it's not him!

Gus Hansen Likes Sick Puppies

Gus Hansen raised from the button. The small blind called and the big blind moved all in for 46,000. Hansen went into the tank for a few minutes. ESPN cameras swarmed around his table as the Great Dane counted out 46,000 in chips. He took a few deep breaths before he tossed his chips into the pot. The small blind folded.

"I have a small pair," said Hansen as he tabled his cards

Hansen: {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}
Opponent: {A-Diamonds}{J-Spades}

"You're one sick puppy," said Hansen's opponent.

The flop was {K-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{8-Hearts} and Hansen still led. The turn was the {6-Hearts}. The river was the {2-Diamonds}. Hansens pair of deuces held up as his opponent headed to the rail.

Hansen increased his stack to 165,000 after that hand. In the last ten minutes, he has busted two players.

Padraig Parkinson Eliminated

Padraig Parkinson moves all in from the cutoff for 10,000, the player on the button calls, the big blind moves all in over the top, and the button folds. Parkinson says, "I think I've got you on this one," and he shows 9-7 offsuit. The big blind shows JJ, and Parkinson has him, in the sense that he has two unsuited undercards.
