If you're planning on playing poker as a living starting now - I'd think about telling them the truth, but I'd probably still lie.

Just don't care what someone else thinks of your poker playing. If you're a strong, confident person and aren't bashful about playing poker for money people will accept it.

no, people won't accept it. The connotation of playing poker for a living is roughly the same as being a degenerate gambler for a lot of people. And if you are trying to impress someone, this can be a deal breaker.
