OP mentioned Micah Hinson - what should I listen to? I got tickets today to see him and The Mountain Goats in a church but I've never heard him...

He only has two full-length albums. I guess The Gospel of Progress is my favorite of the two, but they're both pretty good. Anyway, his live shows blow away his albums imo, since the rawness of his voice is a lot of what makes him unique, and some of that gets lost on the recordings.

This is a pretty cool song.

He really doesn't look like that voice should be coming out of him... Awesome. Might try and track down a YSI or something of the albums to get a proper listen...

If you like Cease to Begin, get their first CD, Everything All the Time. Imo, it is a little better.

The show last night was a lot of fun. I've never really gotten into Art Brut. I've always thought they sounded cool but then quickly tired of it. I found their live show surprisingly entertaining.

The Hold Steady was pretty awesome. Craig Finn has crazy energy and both he and the rest of the band sounded great. They mostly played songs off of Boys and Girls, but mixed in a few older songs as well as about 3 newly written songs that sounded good.

Battles

Hey EDF,

Long time lurker.

I saw Battles last night at Great American Music Hall. All I can say is Wow... one of the best live shows I've seen in a very long time. I highly recommend you see them if you have the chance.

Their precision and composition is just amazing... I mean there's probably only a select few drummers in the world that can do what Battles' drummer was doing, very arrhythmic stuff, it sounded like a drum machine was playing it at times. The volume level of all the instruments was perfect too, they do some dope sample looping and wall of sound-psychedelic type stuff.

I like their album alright, but I definitely don't throw it on in my normal play list. I wasn't really going to go, but a friend convinced me to check them out live because he had seen them before.

They're still on tour with a lot of dates left, if you have a chance, check them out!

just got the new jens lekman based on this thread. it better be good!

I have been digging on:

the mountain goats "all hail west texas". old school mountain goats with just john and the boom box. I still think sunset tree is his best record but this is great.

louis stewart "overdrive" - the best jazz guitarist you've never heard of. he's irish, and man can he play. beautiful tone, touch, great swinging feel, he's got it all.

bach "the st. matthew's passion" - revisiting this after reading the chapter on it from leonard bernstein's book. not much to say here, some of the greatest music ever written. man the complete version is long!

yeah, me too. have lots of listening time this weekend

Also, this isn't exactly hot off the presses, but I just stumbled onto Joanna Newsom and I can't stop listening. If she were any weirder it'd be off-putting, but the balance is just perfect for me right now; though it could get annoying after a while. I actually like her lyrics a lot, as well.

I finally got around to getting the new Say Anything CD and it's good.

brag?: the two new guitarists are friends of mine from high school. they were in a local band called Parkside View that I think I tried to pimp on here a couple years back.
beat: no free cd
