I can't bring myself to start another thread on this, so I'll put it here.

Was anyone else outraged that a phone-in poll on Fox found that close to 70% of voters think the 2007 team is better than the 2004 team?

Or am I still the only guy around who thinks that 2004 team is one of the greatest teams ever?

Toro 10-29-2007 08:14 AM

Re: *official 2007 red sox thread*

The 2004 team had better hitters but the 2007 team hit better in the playoffs. The 2004 team had better starting pitching and better set up bullpen, 2007 team better closer.

Pretty close all in all, but 2007 team was more fun to watch because of the homegrown talent/youth.

04 was better. they had significantly better hitting and two josh becketts. they also faced much better teams in the postseason

Hail to the Red Sox. I think this 2007 team will probably be better next year if they stay healthy. Very nice mixture of veterans and young players. Beckett certainly deserves the Cy Young just based on his regular season and he's only 27. I realize pitchers have had better years statistically in yesteryear. In today's game his accomplishments were just phenomonal. And then we have the playoffs. Awesome performance and he's only 27. The Red Sox have a lot of good up and coming young players in the field and on the mound. The middle of their lineup is just incredible. Manny is 35 but he should have more good in him. Not sure about free agent status of Red Sox players but things look good for the Red Sox long term.

The 2004 team will always be special to me, but I said 2007. Maybe it's being in the moment.

Also, I'd like to thank the Sox for putting together a 6+ game winning streak for the first time this year.

i like the '07 team better at 1b, closer, rf. i like the '04 team better at ss, cf, bullpen. 2b and ace are a wash.

'04 gets the advantage for the "holy [censored]" factor. even down 3-1 to the tribe, i was confident this years team would come back and win.

Re: *official 2007 red sox thread*

2007 vs 2004

>>> huge edge
>> edge
> small edge

Lineup

C Varitek <<< Varitek
1B Youkilis > Millar
2B Pedroia >> Bellhorn
SS Lugo <<< Cabrera
3B Lowell >>> Mueller
LF Manny << Manny
CF Crisp/Ellsbury <<< Damon
RF Drew >> Nixon/Kapler

So 2004 has the edge at C, SS, LF, CF while 2007 has the edge at 2B, 3B, RF. Overall, 2004 had the better position players and outscored the 2007 team 949 runs to 867 runs. Interestingly, two of the big disadvantages for the 2007 team were Manny and Varitek who had one of the best years of their careers in 2004. Team defense was definitely better in 2007 though with Drew, Youkilis and Lowell being huge upgrades.

Starting Pitching

Beckett = Schilling
Schilling << Pedro
Matsuzaka <<< Arroyo
Wakefield = Wakefield

I certainly didn't remember just how good Arroyo was in 2004, but he was a lot better than Daisuke. Looking at his numbers, I definitely don't think we should have traded him. Ah well. The 2004 starting pitching was stronger for the postseason, though in the regular season Gabbard/Lester/Tavarez were better than Lowe.

Bullpen

Papelbon > Foulke
Okajima >>> Timlin
Delcarmen >>> Embree
Timlin >> Leskanic

There's no argument for the 2004 bullpen, here the 2007 bullpen was incredible. Snyder and Lopez were also better than anyone in the 2004 bullpen not named Leskanic or Foulke.

Overall, the 2004 team is the better playoff team, but not all that much better when you take into account defense, 5th and beyond starters, and the entire bullpen situation.

Youk is way way better than Millar was. Way better.

No way Drew is that much better than Trot was, if at all. He SUCKED until the end of the season.

Re: *official 2007 red sox thread*

2004 Millar was probably about as good as 2007 Youkilis. Youkilis cost about a ninth of the money though, and who knows about defense either way.

.297/.383/.474 vs .288/.390/.453

Millar also played about half his games at RF that year, which I completely forgot about.

Re: *official 2007 red sox thread*

It's Derek Lowe you should compare with Dice-K, not Arroyo. And while I think it's a wash for regular season, Lowe had the better postseason '04 than Dice-K's '07.

Nixon was hurt for about half of 2004, so I would put RF as a wash.

It's mainly because rarely do players in baseball play through injuries compared to football or even basketball.

Football players are tougher and so are hoopsters. When I said Pedroia makes baseball great, its more of his mental state. In football, if you are talented, tough, and have aggression, that is all you need. Baseball players aren't as tough and aggressive physically, but like poker players, they need strong minds to get the most out of their talents. Its a game of failure and patience, staying out of your own way. Billy Beane couldn't do it, Lenny Dykstra could.

Even natural born mashers like Manny, he really approaches each at bat, each game, with great balance of mind. Cold dudes like JD, facing elimination in ALCS, spring training in Florida, I don't think he thinks much differently. And its not golf or tennis, no quiet please, the fans in Boston tell him exactly what they think, yet still for all his struggles, he would get ahead, work the count, get something he can drive, put a good swing on the ball, let the results come. Gamers like Pedroia are the best though, 97 in 197 out!

I think you're right with hoops, when guys get in the zone, they are in state of great awareness and calm. Football seems like a lot of rage, power, and speed, like on defense. The QB though needs to keep his cool, find his zone. There's just a lot of time to think in baseball, if your mind gets the best of you, you are in trouble. Ask Rick Ankiel. Like golf I think and the yips. You don't have football yips. Hoops you see it at the FT line, but its easier to lose yourself in the flow of the game, not so easy in baseball.

Red Sox open 2008 season in Tokyo vs Oakland

After going to last year's home opener and ALCS and World Series clinching games, I am highly considering going to Japan. Who else is excited?
