The Rose Bowl takes either Georgia (for the "best" matchup) or Illinois (for Pac Ten vs. Big Ten). By my estimation Georgia is more likely, but I think it's about 60/40. The Rose Bowl really does like that whole "history" thing

Assuming tOSU is in the BSC title game and Illinois makes the top 14 in the BCS standings, I'll bet you even money Illinois goes to the Rose Bowl over Georgia. If neither go, we have a push. Deal?

didnt Tennessee win the NC in 98 w/o winning the SEC?

[/ QUOTE ]

No, absolutely not. I live in Tennessee and so I am constantly reminded about their AWESOME win over the MIGHTY Mississippi St. Bulldogs.

2001 Nebraska was the first team ever AFAIK to compete in the BCS title game w/o winning their conference -- let alone they didn't even play in the championship game (ala Georgia)!

dammit this stuff is idiotic. We need a playoff system NOW.

This system is so ridiculous. This conversation is blowing my brain apart.

Wetzel lays out the case for a playoff. And he's right on nearly every point except this one:

Last season the most memorable college football game was Boise State-Oklahoma, in part because Boise was the unbeaten underdog that wasn't supposed to win. When it did, in dramatic fashion, it became arguably the most popular team in America.

But it had no shot at a national title because the system says Boise can't be any good in 2007 because it wasn't any good in 1967. As illogical as this is, that's the system.

[/ QUOTE ]

Boise State had no shot because they're not in the right club. And the club makes the rules, and makes it to protect the teams in their club. Florida State was no good in 1967, but they're in the right club.

Opponents of bowls often say that "every game matters" - but this isn't true. Nebraska, Boise State, Hawaii, Auburn all will tell you why.

Re: bcs championship game??

yeah, his reference to 67 is incorrect.

Miami weren't exactly world-beaters back then either.
And USF was #2 in the country at one point this year and would likely be #1 and/or going to the NCG if they had stayed unbeaten.

Re: bcs championship game??

I dunno about including every division winner, but I guess I could live with it to see these games. We'd potentially get OSU/UF, WVU/LSU, UK/UGA, and Mizzou/USC in just the 2nd round. Of course, there's really only a couple games that are close in the first round (OSU/USF, UK/Hawaii, USC/OU) but we'd get some awesome football.

Who cares? It's not going to happen anytime soon. I'd rather read articles that layout what will happen this year. Like this one: http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/insid...ry?page=bcs077

It's Insider only, but here's the gist:

Projected BCS Matchups (If Missouri beats Oklahoma)
Allstate BCS National Championship Game
Missouri (Big 12 champ) vs. West Virginia (Big East champ)

The Rose Bowl Game presented by Citi
Ohio State (Big Ten champ) vs. USC (Pac-10 champ)

FedEx Orange Bowl
Virginia Tech (ACC champ) vs. Georgia (at-large)

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
Kansas (at-large) vs. Arizona State (at-large)

Allstate Sugar Bowl
LSU (SEC champ) vs. Hawaii (at-large)
