I like to think of myself as a compassionate objectivist...haha
i'm being serious too...so funny

anyway, I say the Fountainhead is the way to go. Atlas Shrugged is good IMO, but the Fountainhead has the better story.

anyway, objectivism, as I understand it, is based on meritocracy and self-responsibility

however, it lacks the sympathy and empathy for fellow man as well as acknowledging the role that luck plays in life.

If I was raising kids, I'd like them to achieve as the heroes of rand yet feel for their fellow man.

Combine the better parts of Rand with the Dalai Lama and Jack Johnson and you have a helluva team IMO

there's a legitimate and practical reason there is so much repetition in the Iliad.

Yes, I know. I learned that in my initial thread about it on this forum. The responders really helped understand it. The background is pretty interesting, really. A helluva lot more interesting than reading and slogging through the story. Condensed, the story would be much better.

What's funny is the Odyssey kicks ass over it as far as readability and flow.

After reading Iliad, I didn't want to pick up a book for a long time it soured me so much. Just the thought of the book/chapter where they're describing the boats on the shore makes me nauseous.

I really enjoyed Atlas shrugged. The first 80 pages, I had trouble getting into it, but once I did, I really enjoyed it. I'm not much of a fan of Ayn Rand's philosophy, and this book is really a vehicle for demonstrating her philosophies, but I found the book itself enjoyable with insights into life that spoke to my soul. For instance, the part where it describes the only type of woman Rearden could fall for and why - I was like "YEEEESSSSSSSSSS!!!"

I too skimmed much of Galt's speech.
