Anyone been to the new airport lately? I've been reading reports on Stickman; looking classic Thai-style right now with lots of gawkers, bad signage and work still going on. t-minus nine days... hope my luggage doesn't go missing for long.

Drexah,
That youtube vid is very accurate...if you marry a bargirl. If you met a Thai woman from a good family, then probably not. In any case getting married after only 2 months is stupid.

there's atms in laos. well in the capital (can't remember the name), I remember there being like 1 or 2. Traveller's cheques (paid hefty fees) or cash advance on visa cards are probably the best way to go.

Re: Ask Degen Anything About Living In Thailand

ok, a sex story to get things back on track:

First time I went to Thailand I went with a friend of mine who is 51 and is pretty near-sighted. I met a friend of a woman I worked with in the U.S. and we hit it off immediately (she became my wife about 1 1/2 years later). My friend was involved back home so we didn't do anything other than flirt and get massages/dry humps, etc. from the bar girls during our first trip. 8 or 9 months later he breaks up with his girlfriend and decides to go back to Pattaya alone.

Also important to note is his taste in women. Instead of the soft featured, youngish looking girls that are much safer, he prefers a more "exotic" look with more pronounced bone structure and features. There are many beautiful Thai women who look like this...but unfortunately so do most of the katoeys. Most of them are easy to spot, but not all.

So my friend is at least 5-6 drinks into the evening and starts chatting with one of the bargirls and they really hit it off. After a few more drinks and a few games of Connect4 (very popular at the bars) he barfines her and takes her back to his room. They kiss and rub a bit then she goes to the bathroom to take a shower. She comes back wearing only a towel and they start kissing some more and my friend takes off the towel and she has a dick! My friend freaks out and tells him he has to leave. The katoey said that he thought that's what my friend liked and he still had to pay. Rather than getting in a fight, he pays the 500 baht (about $13).

I have to give my friend credit for telling me about it knowing all the [censored] I would give him. I might have kept it secret if I was him.

Guys: tips on buying a phone and bringing it back home? I drooled over the cabinets in the MBK last visit, thinking of bringing something home. Have a concept on unlocking and GSM access, but no idea on how to actually do it. Tips?

This is fairly standard and easy. You can remove the sim card from your american phone and just pop it in there. Change the settings to english (they'll do this at MBK) and you are set.

No warranty and hard to get accessories for phones that haven't been released in the US yet are the two major concerns.

They are also pretty expensive, I paid $650 for mine but its like the most badass phone in history and isn't (or wasn't when i got it) available in the US yet.

I think this depends if the phone has GSM or not. If you buy a cheaper Nokia for example, it may not work in the USA. That was my experience at least. Depending if the phone has Tri-band, Quad-band, CDMA support etc, results could vary. Here's is some interesting related info on GSM and unlocked phones.

Which companies have GSM in the USA?

There are two main companies that offer GSM service in the USA. AT&T and Cingular are now merged into one company, and the second company is T-Mobile.

If your service is with, eg, Sprint, Nextel, Verizon, or just about any other US wireless company, then you do not have GSM service and your phone can't be unlocked.
