I clicked on the links and now I wish I had died without hearing these two songs There is no way cutesy/annoying indie pop like this qualifies as:

"Basically just songs that regardless of genre, likes or dislikes, or whatever else can be widely appreciated simply as a beautiful piece of music"

(sorry to single you out i just get really frustrated at lethargic responses to this type of thread in general... and thankyou for the nina simone links)

well said, some people are very much getting the theme of this thread and other people are just listing favorite songs it seems.

this isn't meant to bring down the original, but i had honestly never heard it before...i had only heard this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=O666kGBEv...ed&search=

and just thought it was something tiesto came up with....hearing the original just makes me think more of Tiesto and appreciate where he took the original idea from...

Just to clarify, is this thread about relatively unknown songs to check out or just anything in general? Seeing replies with international megahits like Free Bird and Yesterday just make me think, "Yeah, no [censored]."

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't have the answer, but since I'm the one that mentioned "Yesterday", I can back it up by saying I think it's one of the best melodies ever written and warrants inclusion on this list. If the thread is about unknown songs/compositions then I'd remove it, but this thread would probably be less fun and full of songs that a lot of people:

1 - would still know even if you think it's a secret
2 - would not know but think is sh*t music

With that said, I would love to be introduced to a great song that I've never heard.

Well yeah, I think Yesterday easily deserves to be included, I just felt like a lot of the suggestions were so obvious/famous that everyone already has heard them. Not picking on you in particular, as a lot of people posted some of the most famous songs ever written.

That said, this thread got me to do something I've been meaning to do for a while -- listen to Sigur Ros. Man they're good.

I might put in a little research of my song library and add my two cents to this tomorrow.

Re: Music Thread: Songs to hear at least once before you die

I would pick two songs by Klaus Nomi:

Death (from Dido & Aeneas)

Samson and Delilah (Aria)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaus_Nomi

Nomi was the first popstar to die of AIDS. 'Death' is the sound of a man confronting, standing up to his impending death; trying to sing his way out of it. His operatically-trained voice soars higher and higher, as he reaches impossible notes repeating the line "Remember me but forget my fate"; it is the sound of rapture, a soul being extinguished.

Samson & Delilah, meanwhile, has an opium-like calming effect; it is so incredibly beautiful.

I implore you to listen to both these tracks before you die - before the end of the week, if possible! They're widely available on download sites, though not on Youtune or the Hype Machine.
