Re: First Loves

My first true love was the summer before college. Her name was Jenny and it was without a shadow of a doubt the best summer of my life. I was crazy about her but she was married. We had the best sex and got along great. When we stopped seeing each other before I left, I was very hurt and I thought about her all the time. Even after I first met Amanda, the girl I was engaged to during my first semester of college, I still thought about her all the time at first. I dont think of her daily anymore but I do every now and then and wonder if I will find anything close to that ever again...

I think at this point I consider myself very lucky that I'm in the apparently rare group that is really really glad I didn't end up marrying mine. We both certainly thought we were heading that way at one point - and man am I glad that didn't happen.

Nice person, and I hope she's happy, but just not compatable at all in hind sight.

Plus, of course, mrs. nolanfan is awesome, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

I used to think this was true. There was definitely a time when I couldn't go a day without thinking about her. And from time to time I still find myself thinking of my first love (married 8 years now). But I'm not really sure what triggers those memories, and I find it harder and harder to recollect her face and her mannerisms. I recently read Haruki Murakami's book "Norwegian Wood" and there is a paragraph from that book that I had to stop and read a few times because it resonated so well:

I do need that time, though, for Naoko's face to appear. and as the years have passed, the time has grown longer. The sad truth is that what I could recall in five seconds all too soon needed ten, then thirty, then a full minute - like shadows lengthening at dusk. Someday, I suppose, the shadows will be swallowed up in darkness. There is no way around it: my memory is growing ever more distant from the spot where Naoko used to stand
